    Determining the antimicrobial activity of Lactobacillus plantarum cell-free extra against Staphylococcus epidermidis

    This study explores the antimicrobial potential of Lactobacillus plantarum cell-free extract (CFE) against Staphylococcus epidermidis, a bacterium commonly linked to hospital-acquired infections and known for its increasing resistance to antibiotics. The research aimed to assess whether L. plantarum CFE could effectively inhibit the growth of S. epidermidis by measuring the zone of inhibition (ZOI) under varying pH and temperature conditions to determine how these factors influence its antimicrobial properties. The extract was obtained by culturing L. plantarum in MRS broth, after which its inhibitory effect was analyzed using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. Its performance was compared to vancomycin, a commonly used antibiotic, across pH levels of 3, 6, and 9, and temperatures of 60°C, 80°C, and 100°C. The findings showed that untreated CFE exhibited a mean ZOI of 8.53 mm, suggesting antimicrobial activity. However, its effectiveness was highly dependent on environmental conditions. The strongest inhibition occurred at pH 3 (11.35 mm ZOI), while activity decreased significantly at pH 9 (6.00 mm ZOI). Temperature also played a role, with the highest inhibition observed at 60°C (10.33 mm ZOI), which declined at 100°C (6.00 mm ZOI), indicating that extreme heat may weaken its effects. A lactic acid assay confirmed the presence of 0.713 g/L, which is believed to contribute to the extract’s antimicrobial action. While vancomycin consistently exhibited stronger inhibition, L. plantarum CFE still demonstrates potential as an alternative antimicrobial agent when optimized for acidity and moderate temperatures

    Knowledge evaluation of laboratory procedures: a descriptive study among CMLS interns at DLSMHSI (S.Y. 2024-2025)

    Medical Laboratory Science is a field of science that combines various disciplines in analyzing specimens for the diagnosis, treatment, and control of diseases, requiring professionals and students to have a strong academic foundation, practical training, and ethical discipline. This study evaluates the knowledge of 4th-year Medical Laboratory Science interns regarding laboratory procedures after their first hospital rotation. A quantitative descriptive method was utilized through a 70-item Google Forms questionnaire to evaluate the target respondents\u27 knowledge level. The results showed that more than 58% of the interns are highly knowledgeable, 36.1% have moderate knowledge, and 5.9% have a low level of knowledge regarding laboratory procedures. In addition, there is also a noticeable significant difference in the level of knowledge of interns regarding Histopathology according to sex; however, no significant difference in the level of knowledge of interns overall and in line with the other laboratory sections was observed due to the lack of evidence. Overall, the findings can be useful to medical laboratory interns, hospital administration and training coordinators, the community, the academe, and future researchers

    In-vitro a-amylase inhibition effect of Aqueous crude extract and fractions of Glinus oppositifolius (Linn.)

    Type 2 Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disorder profoundly influenced by daily variations in lifestyle determinants such as diet, exercise, infection, and stress which demands continuous management. It is a major health problem that has a high rate of morbidity and mortality which results in substantial healthcare costs. Glinus oppositifolius (Linn.), also referred to as “papait” in the Philippines, is a local vegetable weed commonly consumed in the Ilocos region and some parts of Luzon areas, believed to possess various medicinal properties, including its antidiabetic effects. This study evaluates the α-amylase inhibitory potential of the aqueous crude extract of the aerial parts of G. oppositifolius and its fractions (dichloromethane, butanol, and aqueous). Analysis of the plant’s phytochemical profile revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, phenols, saponins, tannins, and reducing sugars in the crude extract. The DCM fraction contained alkaloids, flavonoids, and glycosides; the butanol fraction contained flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, and trace reducing sugars; and the aqueous fraction contained all except alkaloids. TLC profiling using gugo as a standard for saponins indicated similar Rf values between the butanol fraction and gugo extract, suggesting the presence of saponins and triterpenoids. The α-amylase inhibitory effect was assessed using the 3, 5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) assay, with the crude extract and its fractions compared to negative and positive controls (quercetin and acarbose). Results showed the highest inhibition in the DCM fraction, followed by the crude extract. The DCM fraction\u27s absorbance compared to positive controls might indicate a higher inhibitory effect or less interference from reducing sugars. These results highlight the potential of G. oppositifolius, especially its DCM fraction, in inhibiting α-amylase activity. Furthermore, the aqueous crude aerial parts extract of G. oppositifolius shows promise for dietary purposes in managing carbohydrate digestion, warranting further investigation into its bioactive compounds and mechanisms

    The roles of pharmacists in HIV/AIDS care delivery services in a public hospital in Cavite

    Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV/AIDS) remains a serious threat to public health in the Philippines and the entire globe. Pharmacists, as experts in pharmacotherapy, are in a position to provide a range of services to aid in the effort to control the spread of the disease. This study aimed to determine pharmacists\u27 current and potential roles in HIV/AIDS care delivery services from the perspective of different healthcare workers in a public hospital in Cavite, Philippines. The study employed an Exploratory-Descriptive, Qualitative (EDQ) study design to contextualize the experiences of eight different healthcare providers, including pharmacists, in a public hospital designated as one of the six Department of Health (DOH) HIV/AIDS treatment hubs in the region. Data was collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and transcribed to generate codes and themes through thematic analysis using the NVivo software. The experiences of both pharmacists and healthcare providers involved in the treatment of persons living with HIV (PLHIV) include the provision of direct and indirect patient care, with emphasis on the workload and intrapersonal struggles they face in their daily responsibilities. The current roles of pharmacists centered on dispensing, medication counseling, supply chain management, adherence assessment, and pharmacovigilance. In contrast, potential roles included expanded responsibilities in providing health education through post-test counseling. Technical knowledge of medicines, pharmacotherapy, and Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity/Expression (SOGIE), as well as skills in emotional intelligence, communication, and patient-centeredness, were deemed important competencies required to fulfill identified roles. Pharmacists can actively contribute to the prevention of the growing threat of HIV/AIDS by providing education to patients through counseling and by serving as educators and support personnel to fellow healthcare professionals. Findings also highlight the importance of interprofessional collaboration in the provision of HIV/AIDS care
