    This study investigates the influence of environmental conditions, including soil pH, temperature, and geographical variations, on the chemical composition of Lagundi (Vitex negundo L.) leaves collected from selected areas in CALABARZON, Philippines. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy was utilized to analyze and compare the spectral fingerprints of Lagundi samples obtained from different locations with a standard reference sample from Herbanext. The analysis focused on identifying significant wavenumbers corresponding to key functional groups present in Lagundi leaves, which are indicative of their bioactive compounds. To further interpret the spectral data, multivariate statistical techniques such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) were employed to assess the correlation between environmental factors and variations in chemical composition. The findings revealed distinct spectral similarities among Lagundi samples across different areas of CALABARZON, suggesting that despite geographical and environmental differences, the overall chemical profile remains relatively consistent. This study highlights the importance of understanding environmental influences on medicinal plant composition, which is crucial for ensuring the quality, efficacy, and safety of herbal medicines like Lagundi. The results provide valuable insights for the standardization of raw materials used in pharmaceutical applications, supporting the development of quality control measures in the production of herbal formulations. Additionally, the use of FTIR Spectroscopy as a rapid and non-destructive analytical tool demonstrates its potential in the routine assessment of herbal products, ensuring their reliability for medicinal use

    Factors associated to the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths among school-aged children in Barangay Salitran I, Dasmariñas Cavite

    The prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths (STH) remains a concern in the Philippines despite longstanding efforts for control and implementation. Consequently, there is a need for further and consistent assessment of STH control programs, focusing on surveillance and evaluation. This study aims to determine the factors associated with STH prevalence among school-age children, specifically focusing on behavioral, environmental, STH knowledge level, and mass drug administration compliance factors. Methods included stool collections and distribution of survey questionnaires to participants. Parasitological assessments, including direct microscopic examination using the Kato-Katz technique, were employed to detect the presence of Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworm infections. 91 stool samples and responses were collected using purposive sampling. The assessment revealed a prevalence of 35.2% for Ascariasis, 36.3% for Trichuriasis, and 0% for hookworm infection, with 61% of school-aged children testing positive for any of the mentioned parasitic infections. Additionally, Chi-square tests revealed an association between Ascaris infection and average monthly income, as well as education attainment. Associations were also found between Trichuris infection and the source of water. In conclusion, this research study detected a high prevalence of STH infection among the participants. Furthermore, socioeconomic factors such as monthly income, educational attainment of parents, and the source of water were found to be significantly associated with STH prevalence

    Circulating cell-free RNA in blood as a host response biomarker for detection of tuberculosis

    Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of death from an infectious disease worldwide, partly due to a lack of effective strategies to screen and triage individuals with potential TB. Whole blood RNA signatures have been tested as biomarkers for TB, but have failed to meet the World Health Organization’s (WHO) optimal target product profiles (TPP). Here, we use RNA sequencing and machine-learning to investigate the utility of plasma cell-free RNA (cfRNA) as a host-response biomarker for TB in cohorts from Uganda, Vietnam and Philippines. We report a 6-gene cfRNA signature, which differentiates TB-positive and TB-negative individuals with AUC = 0.95, 0.92, and 0.95 in test, training and validation, respectively. This signature meets WHO TPPs (sensitivity: 97.1% [95% CI: 80.9-100%], specificity: 85.2% [95% CI: 72.4-100%]) regardless of geographic location, sample collection method and HIV status. Overall, our results identify plasma cfRNA as a promising host response biomarker to diagnose TB

    Biofertilizer development from Arbuscular mycorrhizae for a sustainable agriculture

    Sustainable agriculture is focused on optimizing available resources to ensure food security for present and future generations. Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) are important natural fertility-promoting microbes in the soils, enabling soil fertility and soil health by enhancing the performance of microbial communities, leading to increased growth rate and productivity. This study aimed to develop a biofertilizer using AMF for agricultural sustainability of Allium fistulosum (spring onions) under specific conditions. Physicochemical parameters such as soil bulk density, temperature, salinity, and pH were measured. Wet sieving method was then used to isolate and identify the presence of AMF in soil. T0 as control and T1 as experimental groups were observed over 4 weeks. A two-way Repeated Measures ANOVA was utilized to evaluate the impact of different treatments, unraveling the significant influence of AMF on the growth of the Allium fistulosum. Results showed that soil physicochemical parameters were within the optimal growth range, with values of 0.015 cm3 (soil bulk density), 25.67°C (temperature), 0.085 dS/m (salinity), and 7.05 (pH). Additionally, the presence of Glomus sp. AMF was identified in soil. ANOVA test results showed that, considering the accepted values (sig. level=.05, p-value=0.000), all values for both T0 and T1 were within the accepted p-value for the height variable; only T1 showed significant results for the width variable; and the majority in T1 showed significant results for the stem variable. Meanwhile, T-test results showed higher means in T1 for both the width and stem variables. These findings were essential in achieving the study’s objectives of contributing to agricultural sustainability
