    Assessing the bacterial contamination of reusable routine venipuncture tourniquets in the outpatient department among the selected private and public hospitals in Cavite

    This research assessed the bacterial contamination of venipuncture tourniquets in outpatient departments from tertiary hospitals in Cavite, Philippines. Rubber tourniquets, used in procedures such as a venipuncture, often make contact with the skin and can easily become contaminated with microorganisms such as bacteria as hygienic practices regarding its use are compromised; therefore, may lead to nosocomial infections. Moreover, this study also determined the frequency of bacterial contamination, colony count, phenotypic identification (ID), and hygiene practice adherence. Using the swabbing and spread plate methods for colony count and VITEK system for phenotypic ID, samples from public (HB1, HB2) and private (HA1, HA2) hospitals were analyzed. With ten samples obtained from private hospitals and five samples obtained from public hospitals, results showed a significant disparity in microbial growth, colony count, and hygiene practices. In samples from public hospitals, colony counts were higher with 1.8 x 107 - 1.1 x 108 CFU/cm2 , whereas those from private hospitals ranged from 0.37 – 20 CFU/cm2 . Furthermore, private hospitals were within the acceptable range of appropriate hygiene practices with regard to the use of tourniquets of \u3c2.5 – 5 CFU/cm2 . Predominating bacteria included species of Micrococcus (31.58%) and Staphylococcus (28.96%). Gram-negative bacteria were found only in public hospitals. In line with this, a survey of 37 healthcare workers also indicated better hygiene adherence with regard to the use of tourniquets in private hospitals compared to public hospitals. Thus, rubber tourniquets serve as significant vectors for bacterial contamination, with public hospitals displaying higher microbial loads due to less stringent hygiene practices. Improved protocols, training, and resources are essential to mitigate contamination risks and enhance patient safety

    The COVID-19 pandemic swiftly evolved from a localized issue in China to a worldwide health crisis, impacting nearly every aspect of life globally. Medical students, particularly the Batch 2023 of the College of Medical Laboratory Science at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute, experienced significant disruptions to their routines, including shifts in hospital and laboratory activities, notably affecting their internship experiences. A descriptive quantitative research design was used along with the utilization of a controlled quota sampling technique to fulfill the objective of the study. The study comprised a total of 104 participants from the target population. Data were collected through Google Forms and underwent statistical analysis. After the conducted survey, it is concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the development of laboratory skills among interns at the College of Medical Laboratory Science. Future researchers are encouraged to broaden the study\u27s scope by incorporating a diverse respondents of Medical Laboratory Science interns from different institutions. By including a variety of perspectives and contexts, researchers can uncover valuable insights that contribute to the enhancement of internship programs and educational practices in the field

    Agglutination properties of lection isolated from Vigna unguiculata (sitaw) and Phaseolus lunatus (Patani) against Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis

    Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins found in various organisms, such as plants and bacteria and has the ability to cause agglutination of cells. This study explores the lectin-like activity isolated from the extracts of Vigna unguiculata (sitaw) and Phaseolus lunatus (patani) seeds against Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis through evaluation of agglutination by absorbance reading and microscopy. Results demonstrated that both plant extracts agglutinated E. coli at all tested concentrations, with a significant decrease in absorbance (p \u3c 0.05) indicating substantial aggregation. The decrease in absorbance for E. faecalis was not statistically significant (p \u3e 0.05). Independent samples t-tests revealed no significant difference in the effectiveness of V. unguiculata and P. lunatus extracts in agglutinating either E. coli or E. faecalis across the tested concentrations. These findings highlight the potential of both V. unguiculata and P. lunatus extracts as rapid identification methods due to their consistent and comparable agglutinating activity against the tested bacteria

    Protein binding and drug-herb interactions of prednisone, cortisone, and hydrocortisone with Allium sativum (garlic) using human serum albumin-weak affinity chromatography (HSA-WAC)

    Drug-herb interactions from the concomitant use of conventional drugs and herbal medicine either hinder the therapeutic activity or increase the toxicity of drugs, posing a public health concern. Zonal elution chromatography was established to detect solute binding to serum proteins such as albumin, with methods adapted from chromatographic displacement immunoassay. With corticosteroids widely prescribed for inflammatory diseases, alongside herbal medicine such as garlic, this study aims to establish weak affinity chromatography as a method to detect distribution-mediated drug-herb interactions between prednisone, hydrocortisone, and cortisone with garlic’s anti- inflammatory constituent, allicin. Individual sample injections and paired injections of steroid and allicin samples were introduced into a prepared column, containing 1.815 mM of immobilized human serum albumin, and ultraviolet spectroscopy was used to detect the changes in retention time and area under the curve. A higher area under the curve values was observed when allicin and corticosteroids were injected individually into the human serum albumin column. The area under the curve values significantly decreased when allicin and a corticosteroid were combined with one another. Among the different methods performed, the displacement method showed a decrease in allicin’s retention time. Weak affinity chromatography has identified that allicin has an interaction with the steroids analyzed. This is supported by the changes in the retention time, dissociation constant, and area under the curve of allicin. The results show the utility of HSA-WAC as a routine analytical method to assess the safety of herbal medicines. This can be an alternative to more costly procedures, in terms of protein usage, such as equilibrium dialysis, ultrafiltration, and ultracentrifugation
