Perceived level of confidence in performing basic laboratory procedures among medical laboratory science alumni of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute
In the field of Medical Laboratory Science, it is necessary for professionals to carry out both competence and confidence. Due to the pandemic, the Batch 2022 Medical Laboratory Science graduates of DLSMHSI were not able to maximize their potential in terms of laboratory practices. With this, the purpose of the study aimed to determine their perceived level of confidence in performing basic laboratory procedures, and if there is a significant difference when they are grouped according to sex and employment status. A 5-point Likert scale from Walsh, et al. (2021) was modified and used to fit the field of Laboratory Science. The scale is composed of 49 questions, with seven different categories including General Procedures, Blood Banking, Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Microscopy, Hematology, Immunology and Serology, and Microbiology. The Informed Consent Form and Questionnaire were given mainly through the Messenger platform, along with their respective emails gathered from the Alumni Office. In a total of 138 graduates, the researchers gathered a maximum of 79 respondents which sufficed an 80% confidence level.
Based on the data, most of the respondents were females and unemployed. In terms of the perceived level of confidence, the majority rated themselves with overall “High Confidence.” When grouped according to sex, the p-value of 0.001 suggested that there is a significant difference in their confidence level and that males were more confident. On the other hand, when grouped according to employment status, a p-value of 0.169 suggested that there is no significant difference in their confidence level

Concept of Spirituality Among Millennials of Selected Secondary and Tertiary Institutions of De La Salle Philippines
Filipino Millennials constitute one third of the country’s population. This study sought to determine the following: the profile of Millennial respondents from selected Lasallian Institutions in the Philippines; their concept of spirituality based on the four general elements/ indicators of spirituality (meaning and purpose, relatedness/connectedness, beliefs and belief systems, expressions); the significant difference in their concept of spirituality when grouped according to specific items that comprise the profile and the political, cultural and socio-economic issues that the Millennials consider to have a connection with their concept and experience of spirituality. A self-constructed questionnaire was designed to accomplish the objectives of the study. There had been 1,185 Millennial participants. Results showed that the over-all concept of spirituality has a qualitative interpretation of very strong concept of spirituality. When individual over-all means of each element were compared, the highest was on beliefs and belief systems and the lowest mean was on the area of expressions of spirituality. It has been established that there is a significant difference when means were compared according to gender, religious denomination, type of elementary school attended, membership in school organization/s, religious and social activities with the family, time spent in using gadgets and family income. There is no significant difference when means were compared according to age, living condition and type of high school attended. The top 5 social issues important to the Millennials are: peace and order, human rights, education, environment and marriage and family life
Pharmaceutical cost dynamics for the treatment of rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis in children and adolescents in South Africa, India, and the Philippines
Rifampicin-resistant (RR) tuberculosis (TB) in children is a major global health concern but is often neglected in economics research. Accurate cost estimations across the spectrum of paediatric RR-TB treatment regimens are critical inputs for prioritisation and budgeting decisions, and an existing knowledge gap at local and international levels. This normative cost analysis was nested in a Phase I/II pharmacokinetics, safety, tolerability, and acceptability trial of TB medications in children in South Africa, the Philippines and India. It assessed the pharmaceutical costs of 36 childhood RR-TB regimens using combinations from 16 different medicines in 34 oral formulations (adult and child-friendly) in 11 weight bands in children \u3c15 years of age. The analysis used local and Global Drug Facility pricing, and local and international guideline recommendations, including adaptions of BPaL and BPaLM regimens in adults. Costs varied significantly between regimen length, age/weight banding, severity of disease, presence of fluroquinolone resistance, and different country guideline recommendations. WHO recommended regimen costs ranged 12-fold: from US2,761 (long regimen in severe, fluroquinolone-resistant disease). Regimen treating fluoroquinolone-resistant infection cost US 380 (range 563) per child but is expected to have wider benefits including palatability, acceptability, adherence, tolerability, and dose accuracy. There were substantial differences in regimen affordability between countries when adjusted for purchasing power and domestic spending on health. Appropriate, effective, and affordable treatment options are an important component of the fight against childhood RR-TB. A comprehensive understanding of the cost and affordability dynamics of treatment options will enable national TB programs and global collaborations to make the best use of limited healthcare resources for the care of children with RR-TB
Autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells and endothelial progenitor cells transplantation showed potential benefits for type 2 diabetes mellitus Filipino patients: a case series
Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a serious metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. Long-standing T2DM may lead to various macro- and microvascular complications such as diabetic nephropathy, neuropathy, and retinopathy. Currently available treatments for T2DM target high plasma glucose levels but do not address T2DM-associated complications. In this report, the therapeutic application of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) transplantation in improving diabetic blood monitoring parameters among selected T2DM patients was investigated. Methods: Five Filipino patients with T2DM diagnosed for more than five years agreed to participate in the autologous bone marrow-derived stem cell transplantation. Five milliliters (mL) per kilogram (kg) of bone marrow was collected from the patients following standard procedures, and bone marrow-derived stem cells underwent quantification, genetic typing, microbial analysis, and quality control before being infused into the patients. MSCs and EPCs were intravenously transfused into the patients once a month for 6 months. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and creatinine (CREA) levels were recorded pre- and post-stem cell transplantation. Results: The findings of the study revealed that the administration of autologous bone marrow-derived stem cells showed no adverse effects and improved or controlled the blood monitoring levels in most patients. Four out of five patients showed a reduction in their BUN (mean reduction = 2.246) and HbA1c (mean reduction = 0.74%) and maintained their creatinine levels within the normal range following the 6 months of infusion. Meanwhile, three out of five patients showed a decrease in FBG levels (mean reduction = 1.484 mmol/L). Conclusion: This preliminary report suggests the potential of autologous bone marrow-derived stem cell transplantation for the treatment and management of T2DM. Future studies may focus on examining other parameters such as C-peptide levels and evaluate the efficacy and safety of autologous MSCs and EPCs in the long-term management of T2DM
Ichthyosiform Lichen Planus Pigmentosus in a 19-Year-Old Male Patient: Case Report
Lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP) is a condition characterized by persistent and asymptomatic brownish-black-to-blue or purple-gray pigmentation, predominantly in the face and sun-exposed areas, commonly in dark-skinned individuals. Several clinical variants of LPP have been reported. However, the ichthyosiform type of LPP has not been reported. We present a 19-year-old male patient who presented with a 7-year history of asymptomatic grayish macules; patches with fine scales on the face, trunk, and upper extremities; and grayish plaques with thick ichthyosiform scales on the lower extremities. The diagnosis of LPP was proven by histopathological findings on both the macular and ichthyosiform plaques. Cluster differentiation (CD) 68 stain highlights the same density of pigment-laden macrophages in both the gray macule and the ichthyosiform plaque. The cause of LPP is unknown. Transcription factor anomalies may play a role in increased keratinization of lichen planus lesions. It can be assumed that the mechanism of the altered distribution of keratinization may occur on the ichthyosiform lesions in this patient. The terminology ichthyosiform lichen planus pigmentosus is hereby proposed to be added to the clinical variants of LPP
Design of ssDNA aptamer for the early diagnosis of prostate cancer via interaction with glutamate carboxypeptidase II
In the pursuit of novel aptamers targeting the transmembrane protein glutamate carboxypeptidase II (GCPII), prominently expressed on prostate cancer cell lines, an in-silico design strategy was employed to circumvent the traditional SELEX approach. Thus, in order to design an aptamer that binds to GCPII for the early diagnosis of prostate cancer, the researchers employed an array of web servers and software tools, including the tRNA Database, HDOCK, PLIP, UNAfold, 3dRNA/DNA, BIOVIA Discovery Studio, and Chimera, to design aptamers with superior binding affinity and specificity. Screening 249 initial aptamer sequences using the tRNA Database and HDOCK simulations identified five candidates, with two modified to exhibit higher binding scores than the reference aptamer (A9g) when docked to GCPII, and PLIP analysis revealed critical binding hotspots for further modifications. As a result, among the five potential aptamer candidates obtained, two were successfully modified. From which were aptamers Zai-M18, Ram-M11, and Ram-M16 were successfully designed with docking score values of -327.22 kcal/mol, -326.26 kcal/mol, and -341.27 kcal/mol, respectively, to GCPII exceeding the docking score of A9g which was -324.03 kcal/mol, possibly accounting for the new hydrophobic interactions found on Zai-M18, Ram-M11, and Ram-M16, as compared to the pre-existing interactions of A9g with GCPII. That is why for future studies, it is recommended to do further molecular modifications on aptamers ZaiM18, Ram-M11, and Ram-M16, specifically enhancing their functional groups for the improvement of interactions with the utilization of molecular dynamics. Moreover, they could also be utilized in isothermal calorimetry titration in vitro studies
Extraction and antimicrobial evaluation of oil from Homalomena philippinensis rhizome against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when medications lose their efficacy against pathogens, posing a significant threat to public health and the effectiveness of modern medicine. This study aims to explore the potential of Homalomena philippinensis, a plant endemic to the Philippines, as an antimicrobial agent against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Oil was extracted from the rhizomes of Homalomena philippinensis using Soxhlet extraction. The resulting oil was assessed for phytochemicals commonly found in the Homalomena species, including alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids. Its antimicrobial activity was evaluated using the disk diffusion method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) through microbroth dilution with a 96-well plate. The disk diffusion method revealed that the oil extract and a solution of oil extract with DMSO created zones of inhibition measuring 1.17 cm and 1.23 cm, respectively. In comparison, vancomycin produced a zone of inhibition measuring 2.97 cm. These results suggest that the oil extract has the potential to inhibit the growth of MRSA. To further assess the efficacy of the oil extract, the MIC assay was conducted. The MIC assay showed that both 10% and 1% of the oil extract exhibited antimicrobial activity against MRSA, making 1% of the oil extract the minimum inhibitory concentration. The results stipulate that the species Homalomena philippinensis possesses an antimicrobial activity against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, highlighting its potential as a viable source of novel antimicrobial agents
