    Antibacterial property of the edible mushroom Flammulina filiformis extract against Staphylococcus aureus

    There are already a few types of mushrooms that have exhibited their antibacterial properties against certain bacteria, but these studies are limited to a certain scope only. This study aims to further examine the antibacterial properties of Flammulina filiformis against Staphylococcus aureus. The study utilized an experimental research design employing Kirby- Bauer disk diffusion method. The results revealed that the antibacterial properties of Flammulina filiformis extracts were evident against Staphylococcus aureus at various concentrations. Moreover, higher concentrations of the extract showed greater efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus. This indicates a significant variation in antibacterial properties among different concentrations of Flammulina filiformis based on the zone of inhibition. There was a significant difference in the zone of inhibition between the different concentrations of the extract and the Vancomycin. The study suggests that Flammulina filiformis extract demonstrated effective antibacterial activity as Staphylococcus aureus showed susceptibility to the varying concentrations exhibiting a considerable diameter of zone of inhibition. Since Flammulina filiformis has shown promising antibacterial effects, the Department of Health could start clinical trials to test how well Flammulina filiformis extract works in treating Staphylococcus aureus infections and other similar bacterial infections in humans

    Detection and identification of bacterial colonies found in the restroom sinks of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute through morphological characterization

    Spaces, such as restrooms, are known to be a place where bacterial contamination occurs, leading to disease transmission. While toilets serve as the major carrier of bacteria, other research has shown that sinks can act as carriers too. However, information regarding the bacterial presence of sinks has been insufficient. Thus, this study aimed to uncover and identify the bacterial colonies in restroom sinks. A descriptive study was done to detect and characterize bacterial colonies found in the sinks of the Lourdes E. Campos, MD Building and Academic Extension of the De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute. The methods in this study included taking samples from the restroom sinks, which then underwent serial dilution, colony counting, and morphological characterization. Results showed that the restroom sinks of the buildings had low counts of bacterial colonies. Based on the morphological characteristics, the samples exhibited similarities to nonpathogenic bacteria—Staphylococcus epidermidis—and pathogenic bacteria—Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Findings suggested that the low count of bacterial colonies are likely caused by effective cleaning procedures, proper waste management, and improved user hygiene. The outcomes in this study prompted housekeeping to enforce more comprehensive cleaning strategies and future researchers to conduct a study between the before and after cleaning states of the restroom sinks, the effectiveness of the cleaning protocols, as well as the effects of other bacteria reduction factors. Identification and analysis of the specific bacteria present in the sinks were also recommended

    Evaluating the adsorptive capacity of cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) pod husk on different petroleum products

    The Philippines is an archipelagic country in the Coral Triangle known for its abundant underwater ecosystem. However, over the past few years, oil spills have threatened not only the ecosystem but also the livelihood of the people because of the high cost of clean-up methods. Thus, this study aims to evaluate cacao pod husks (CPH), a deemed agricultural waste in the country, as an alternative in adsorbing petroleum products commonly found in oil spills, such as diesel, gasoline, and used engine oil. In this study, the CPH samples were processed and submerged in different oil-water solutions wherein the adsorptive capacity was computed based on the oil-sorption formula. Results showed that CPH has the highest adsorptive capacity of 2.25 in used engine oil and 0.33 and -0.17 in gasoline and diesel, respectively. Post-hoc analysis further confirmed that the adsorptive capacity of CPH in used engine oil is significantly different from gasoline and diesel. The findings of this study suggest that CPH is a potential alternative for cleaning up oil spills, and further research is needed in order to determine the CPH particle size suitable for adsorbing gasoline and diesel efficiently

    Anti-angiogenesis has been proven to play a pivotal role in cancer and tumor management. Citrus grandis (Pomelo) rinds, rich in vital bioactive compounds, have shown potential anti-angiogenic properties. However, its efficacy in inhibiting angiogenesis in animal models remains unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-angiogenic activity of Citrus grandis rind ethanolic extract, specifically towards the number and length of blood vessels on the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM), to contribute to the development of alternative treatments for inhibiting tumor-associated angiogenesis and controlling cancer progression. The method of an in-vivo CAM assay was utilized, with Anas platyrhynchos (Mallard duck) embryos as test subjects, following three phases: pomelo rind extract isolation, administration of treatment and incubation, and observation of characteristics post-treatment. Statistical analysis revealed no consistent trend between the extract and angiogenesis, with variability in the duck embryo survival rate post-administration. This emphasizes the need for continued investigatory efforts to further discover the potential of natural products, especially against angiogenesis, towards improved cancer management. Such endeavors would require, overall, an improved methodological process to ensure data accuracy that would be more constructive toward cancer and health research

    Quantification of tetracycline residues in farm-caged adult nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Taal lake using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Elisa)

    Tetracyclines are a group of antibiotics, commonly administered to fish to treat and prevent various bacterial infections. However, concerns have been raised regarding the development of antibiotic resistance in both fish and human populations. With the overuse of Tetracyclines in managing diseases in aquaculture comes the accumulation of antibiotic residues in the meat of the fish, which is consumed by the human population. Our study chose the Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) as the target for quantification, as it is a species of fish that is widely cultivated and consumed in the Philippines. This study utilized a competitive Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) in quantifying the residue levels for Tetracyclines in the meat samples of sixty (60) adult Nile Tilapia from a farm cage in Taal Lake. The Maximum Residue Level of 200 µg/kg set by the Philippine National Standards (PNS) and the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (BAFS) was used as a point of comparison for the residue levels. Results from the ELISA testing determined an average residue level of 563.84 μg/kg among the 60 adult Nile Tilapia samples, and of the 60 adult Nile Tilapia samples, only 10 were found not exceeding the MRL. Then a one-way sample T-test was used to determine if there is a significant difference in the Tetracycline residue levels from the farm-caged adult Nile tilapia in Taal Lake and from the set MRL of 200 µg/kg. From the T-test, it was found that there is a significant difference between the mean of the sample residue and the MRL

    The impact of social media use on body image perception and body satisfaction of DLSMHSI senior high school students

    This study investigates the impact of social media use on the perception of body image and satisfaction among senior high school students at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI). The research aims to enhance the understanding of how social media influences these students\u27 body image perceptions and satisfaction levels. By analyzing demographic factors such as gender, age, and frequently used social media platforms, the study identifies significant differences in perceived effects on body image and satisfaction. Data were collected from 255 respondents using an adapted questionnaire. The online survey gathered information on demographics, social media usage, and body image perceptions through a Likert scale. Results indicate that social media impacts individuals of all genders and ages, regardless of platform. The findings highlight the complex influence of social media on personal well-being, showing that DLSMHSI senior high school students experience a low to moderate impact on body image perception and satisfaction. To further explore this topic, the researchers recommend including parental viewpoints in future studies to determine if parental involvement affects youth body image perception and satisfaction

    The influence of daily screen time to the emotional burnout of the senior high school learners of DLSMHSI

    Emotional burnout is the huge manifestation which is closely linked to the usage of electronic devices in daily life, especially now that everything is constantly changing and nearly all of our everyday activities involve the internet. Increased screen time has been associated with reduced attention spans, mood swings, and thinking difficulties. The aim of this research is to study the potential correlation between the students\u27 screen time and their vulnerability to emotional exhaustion and the psychological impacts of increasing daily screen use. The daily screen time feature on smartphones will also be maximed to examine the students’ daily consumption of technology. The qualitative study uses a methodological approach with eight (8) respondents as the sample target population. More specifically, the research will employ a descriptive phenomenological existential study that blends a purposive sampling strategy with a narrative analytic approach, and only valid students from DLSMHSI-SHSSHS will be involved. The results will be categorized into three (3) categories, namely; (1) The students’ experiences with the usage of technology in relation to emotional burnout, (2) Attention span, mood changes, and thinking difficulties as factors for emotional burnout, and (3) The influence of screen time to the emotional well-being of the Senior High School Students. The study identified the major finding of daily screen time that primarily affects the individuals in positive or negative responses through Emotional Burnout
