    Breaking The Barrier: Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) As A Workforce in The Philippines

    This Policy Brief discusses the pressing unemployment problem among Persons with Disabilities in our country. There are roughly 1.44 million Filipinos who are living with disability in the Philippines, and most are living in poverty. There is a link between employment and poverty, where unemployment lies at the center of the poverty cycle. PWDs, like any other individuals, could perform their work-related tasks. Some even overperformed compared to their abled counterparts. As a result, there are gains in hiring PWDs for the institution and our country. Years have passed after the enactment of R.A. No. 7277, also known as the Magna Carta for Persons with Disabilities. However, PWDs still face challenges, particularly in getting decent jobs to improve their quality of life. Problems include job matching, insufficient work in private institutions, and reintegration problems

    Tuberculosis (TB) is an airborne disease that can be spread from person to person. Children that are below 15 years old (also known as Pediatric Tuberculosis) have high probability to develop life threatening disease and the most substantial number of TB cases are observed in children younger than five years of age and adolescents older than ten years of age. The focus of this research is how the technology innovation was designed and developed to help doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals make better data driven decisions, optimize its current TB clinical diagnostic practices, and improve its process on determining the eligibility for TB Preventive Treatment (TPT)

    In vivo cultivation and fecal-oral transmission model of stool matrix-derived Entamoeba histolytica in locally-bred sprague dawley rats

    Amoebiasis is a commonly acquired parasitic infection among humans that is predominantly caused by the protozoa Entamoeba histolytica. Symptoms of the disease include the extent of infection in the gastrointestinal tract which may extend its severity in the form of extraintestinal infections. This study aims to establish the capability to contrive an in vivo acculturation and an animal model which aims to proportionately simulate an infection in a nonhuman organism; ultimately, the study incorporated the amebiasis infection to Sprague-Dawley rats, which are the chosen mammalian organisms to simulate the clinical presentations of amebiasis. The study proposed that the confirmative development of amoebic liver abscess with complement of stools indicating amoebic infection implies the susceptibility. Standardized rats in an environmentally controlled condition were inoculated with an Entamoeba histolytica load by oral gavage and were incubated and allowed for the development of infection for 10 days; a negative control group was also subjected to oral gavage with normal saline solution. Consequently, none of those belonging to the experimental group were able to present signs of amoebic infection based on fecal dispensation due to the absence of watery stool consistency and absence of cyst forms under low power objective microscopy, while two (2) out of the ten (10) rats developed non-amebic liver abscess. The results of the study definitively imply mere susceptibility of the rats to amoebic infection. Furthermore, the study sets forth underpinnings for future research in establishing a more standardized and statistically sound animal model for simulation and clinical trial use

    Relationship between the physical therapy programs and the physical therapists’ perceived level of adherence of patients with musculoskeletal conditions in selected rehabilitation centers in Dasmariñas and Bacoor City

    This study follows a descriptive-correlational design that aims to determine whether physical therapy intervention programs: active, passive, and combined approaches, have significant relationships with the level of adherence of patients with musculoskeletal conditions. The researchers also aimed to determine whether years of practice and length of service have a significant difference on patient adherence; other extrinsic factors were excluded. From this, the researchers have chosen physical therapists working in selected rehabilitation centers within Dasmariñas and Bacoor Cities as participants. The study gathered 20 respondents using a purposive sampling method by disseminating their self-structured surveys online and on-site, depending on the proponents’ convenience. Results revealed that the combined approach is the most commonly employed approach followed by the active approach; no answers are provided for the passive approach. The active approach insinuated moderate relations towards patient adherence while a weak relationship was observed with combined approach. Furthermore, two proponents of the adherence scale predominate with positive conclusions (x̄=3.85, x̄= 3.75) which centralizes on the optimal transparency and engagement manifested within the patient-client relationship. Adding to that, although both active and combined approaches prove to show a moderate-weak relationship, it still indicates that there is an inconclusive significant relationship to a bigger population. This undertaking also showed that the demographic profile of the respondents had no relationship towards patient adherence. In conclusion, there is insufficient evidence to prove that the physical therapy programs, educational background, and years of experience have any bearing on the level of adherence, and that patients will view their therapists as proficient despite their tenureship and educational attainment. Overall, this endeavor can further improve tailoring PT management and optimizing care

    The relationship between video-based learning and academic performance in physical therapy practical courses in the College of Rehabilitation Sciences of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute

    This study aimed to determine the demographic profile of the students as to their motivation, preferences and infrastructure, the level of video-based learning in the PT Apps subjects, the level of academic performance, and the relationship between video based learning and academic performance of CRS PT Batch 2024 students in their PT Application subjects. The study follows a descriptive correlational research design, following 1) a survey questionnaire for the respondents in order to determine the demographic profile, and 2) a document review involving the acquisition of the respondents’ 2nd Semester Finals Grades of their PT Application subjects through the designated channels. Out of 117 students (20 of which were excluded as part of the pilot test), the researchers were able to gather 73 students as part of the research process. The research yielded the following: 1) Respondents preferred laptops, smartphones, and tablets for viewing educational content, making versatility of online tools important for video-based learning, sufficient bandwidth speed of around 10 mbps that supported seamless access to video content, and generally positive motivation levels, satisfying engagement and learning outcomes in a video-based environment, 2) The level of video-based learning among CRS PT Batch 2024 students generally exhibited a neutral level of learning, but presented high levels of learning in the aspect of repetition and replication of skills, 3) academic performance among the respondents presented overall satisfactory to very good levels among the six (6) PT Apps Subjects and 4) There is no significant relationship between video-based learning and academic performance
