Perceptions of Major Barriers Preventing Projects from Reaching Leed Platinum
No full textThis paper delves into the primary obstacles hindering general contractors from attaining Platinum-level certification on the LEED Scorecard for their projects. Frequently, projects either abstain from pursuing LEED certification entirely or encounter obstacles at the Gold or Silver tiers, failing to ascend to the highest Platinum certification. The study seeks to identify the pivotal factors impeding general contractors from progressing their projects to superior certification levels or securing certification altogether. Moreover, it will examine specific credits on the scorecard directly associated with these overarching factors. Through interviews with industry professionals, insights into the challenges faced by contractors in obtaining LEED certification emerged. The interviews emphasized four main factors impeding certification progress: the steep cost of LEED credits, the impact of project location, the characteristics of the project type, and the dearth of early involvement from contractors. These factors, as highlighted by industry experts, consistently impede efforts to achieve higher certification levels or obtain certification altogether. In summary, this paper elucidates industry perspectives on the barriers confronting general contractors in navigating the LEED certification process, illuminating the intricacies inherent in achieving sustainable building standards. Addressing these challenges can stimulate enhanced collaboration and innovation, thereby advancing the objectives of sustainability and environmental stewardship in construction projects
