Sea Prayer: An Illustrated Literary Narration on the Afflictions of Refugees
Get PDFIllustrated fiction is one of the narrative media that came into the arena of literature during the 18th century because of the technological advancements that occurred during this period. Illustrated editions of literary creations became more popular during the late18th century until the last decades of the 19th century. During this period, an illustrated edition of fictional works was in higher demand than the prose editions. However, the emergence of various adaptations of literary creations, such as films and graphical representation that came into command at the end of the 19th century and 20th century replaced the popularity of illustrated fiction. Khaled Hosseini, one of the beloved writers of the 21st century has documented the sufferings of Afghan society in his three novels; The Kite Runner (2003), A Thousand Splendid Suns (2007), and And the Mountains Echoed (2013). His works explore the sufferings of common people under the dark shadows of war and violence and spread the rays of peace and humanity. His latest work, Sea Prayer, published on 18 September 2018, Illustrated by Dan Williams, is also deals with the perennial problems faced by the human race in the modern world; war, violence, and refugee life. Written in the form of a letter from a father to son, on the eve of their journey to find their new home, the work describes the traumatic condition of the Syrian refugees and the glory of pre-war Syria. Thus, Hosseini urges the readers to reflect on the dilemmata faced by the Syrian society during the period of war and to hold their hands together to bring peace in Syria and all over the world

Any discipline, which binds one with one another in an ethical way, is religion. Religion has very powerful repercussions on society. Whereas the word spirituality comes from root words in Hebrew, Latin and Greek that all mean wind, breath, or air - that which gives life. One has common terms that use ‘spirit’ as a sense of energy, essence, vitality, awareness or consciousness, such as ‘team spirit’, ‘sing with spirit’, ‘in high spirits’, ‘a generous spirit’, ‘spirit of the law’, or ‘get in the spirit of it’. Spirituality means feeling of one’s unity with all. It is the state of consciousness in which the feeling of otherness is gone and the feeling of kinship and unity with the so called others is established. In the novel The Color Purple (1982) by Alice Walker spiritual perspectives are the extent to which spirituality permeates the major characters such as Celie, Netie, Shug Avery and Albert in their lives and engage in spiritually related interactions. Get PDFThe African-American novelist Zora Neal Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God is about a black female Jeanie Crawford, who undergoes a journey of proclaiming her ‘self’. Hurston’s novel explores the struggle of a black woman to break away from the triple oppression of gender, race and class. Janie succeeds in rebelling the pre-assigned gender roles and also violates the patriarchal notions of a black society. The black women have been sexually exploited both by the white men and the black men. Janie has passively accepted the conventional roles of a woman during her early age. But eventually she learns from the experiences of her three marriages. Janie succeeds in asserting her real self by defying the societal norms. She identifies herself with nature rather than the society in which she lives and defines herself through her association with nature. As it is understood from the novel that Janie finds solace in nature from the society which is oppressing her due to her sex, race and class. The ecocritical overtones are very prominent in the novel. Hurston speaks about the black woman’s issues in a white American society. In Alice Walker’s terms, Janie is a womanist because she transforms herself to a self-fulfilled and self-defined woman
