Get PDFThis paper attempts to put radically in to question the hegemonic choices of representation in western visual culture by examining Anna Deavere Smith’s performance series On the Road: A Search for American Character. What is brought to the sharp focus of this study is the logic of perpetuating the conventional categories of race, ethnicity, gender and age in performance – a logic that prevails in the mainstream media; more specifically in theatre – and the unmasking of these categories in representation.

This research paper attempts at making a theoretical evaluation and exploration of the available approaches to writing. The exploration of writing[2] as a discourse of knowledge reveals its interdisciplinary nature. The Language of Partition: A Study of the Narrative Structures of Selected Stories
Get PDFThe Partition of India in 1947 that resulted in the death and displacement of millions of people continues to inhabit the cognizance of the people of South Asia as a historical phenomenon laden with violence. Although the bequest of the Partition is palpable in episodes of religious tension, discourses on minority belonging, secularism, nation and nationalism in India, critical exploration of the phenomenon as a tension-ridden historical episode has largely been restricted. The present research paper deals with the stylistic aspects of a series of seven short fictional narratives from Bengal and Punjab. In this paper, the scholar talks about how the creative-imaginative representation of Partition has till date remained confined to the discussion of thematic aspects with the result that the elements of narration have remained insignificant in critical mediation. As such, the scholar addresses the gap in the genre of Partition studies by critically reading and stylistically scrutinizing the narrative elements of a series of selected Partition narratives to see how violence as a leitmotif in these seven selected fictional texts is documented

Get PDFUnderstanding of the holocaust event, ‘Partition of Indian Subcontinent’(1947) still appears a problematic chapter to deal with even after more than seven decades of the holocaust event not only for millions of Indians and Pakistanis but for many in abroad too. The momentous event still continues to tantalize many historians, writers, researchers and scholars at present day context even. Reading history is not enough to understand this event of great vastness. Literary representation of Partition also plays a significant role in this regard. The cataclysmic event has been documented in a wide range of literary genres -fictions, non-fictions, poetry, memoirs, oral history etc., published in multiple languages in many countries. All the writers try to capture the most harrowing scenes of the turbulent period of history as per their immensity of experiences and meticulous observation. Besides many reasons responsible for the Partition, the underlying ‘anachronistic’ approach to ‘religion’ is noticed as the most prominent one in resulting the thought-provoking disaster of 1947. The present paper seeks to explore ‘the’ least attended aspect but ‘the’ most important reason of the holocaust i.e. the prevailing anachronistic approach to “religion” instead of “modern” with special reference to Brent Nonbri’s idea of “modern concept” of an “ancient( traditional)” notion of “religion.
