Abstract onlyThis study is focused on aims to assess gender mainstreaming as a strategy for Magna Carta of Women (RA 9710) implementation among government agencies and local government units. Specifically, it aims to raise awareness and implementation of RA 9710 and assess the impact of gender mainstreaming as a strategy in implementing MCW (RA 9710) on the situation of women among national government agencies (NGAs) and local government units (LGUs). This study uses the qualitative and content analysis approach in trying to determine the extent of Gender Mainstreaming to government agencies and local government units based on the Magna Carta of Women. It looked into studies to show whether the law is effectively implemented by its duty bearers. The enactment of RA 9710 otherwise known as the Magna Carta of Women is a comprehensive women’s right that will give more familiarity to the Philippines and it will seek to eliminate discrimination against women by recognizing, protecting, fulfilling and promoting the rights of Filipino women especially those in marginalized sectors.Includes bibliographical referencesJuris Docto
Critical analysis of laws affecting migrant workers and overseas Filipino workers
Abstract onlyThis study is conducted covering laws which affect the migrant and overseas Filipino workers and that of their families.
The researcher opted for the study due to the rapid increase of the numbers of Filipinos working abroad which also escalated a numerous cases of forced labor and domestic abuse against them.
A thorough analysis of Republic Act 10022 amending R.A. 8042 (Migrant Workers Act of 1995) and Presidential Decree No. 1694 as amended by PD 1809 (Creation of Welfare Fund for Overseas Workers) was conducted.
The study gives importance to the welfare of the migrant and overseas Filipino workers through upholding their rights and privileges as an employee working in a different state with different laws. Since they are far from the instantaneous protection afforded by the government to its people, the researcher studied the existence, effectiveness and continuality of that same protection extended wherever those migrant workers are in the world.
The promotion of financial literacy among migrants and their families to stir savings, investments and productive use remittances has become an area of convergence of the programmes and initiatives of the government, private sector and civil society. In order to maximize the potential of overseas employment, migration must be mainstreamed in the development plans of the nation, but most of all in the local government plans because reintegration may take place at the local level or hometown of migrants.
It is apparent that the remittances brought into the country by these workers are a big factor for the stability of economic growth in our country, thus, quoting them as the country’s modern heroes. However, these labelled heroes do not receive all the benefits which is rightfully theirs, nonetheless, the aid nor assistance that they deserve.
The competitiveness of Filipino migrant labour in the global market in terms of productivity and wages is said to have maintained the country’s favourable economic indicators even in times of regional or global financial crisis or low points of economic cycles.
Discussions persist on the productive verses non-productive use of remittances by recipient households. The incentive for migrants to employ remittances in productive investment products will come from better investment opportunities in the economic and financial market.
Evidently, the researcher obtained several documents and published works discussing about migrant workers and overseas Filipino workers and their actual day to day lives, thus, enabling the researcher to fully comprehend the major factors in studying the laws applicable to them. However, the researcher also came up with provisions that are to be considered idle and disadvantageous to the migrant and overseas Filipino workers. These provisions may have become as such due to the fact of rapid globalization and change in the customs, laws and other identical factor of the country where the migrant worker is in.
These provisions, when not amended thoroughly, may affect the upholding of the rights of the workers abroad. Thus, there are numbers of recommendations insinuated and formulated by the researcher for the benefit and advancement of the employees.Includes bibliographical referencesJuris Docto
Performance testing of woven bamboo basket lined with woven plastic sack and mesh bag for Latundan banana (Musa sapientum) distribution
Abstract onlyThis research study aimed to determine and compare the protective ability of plastic sack and mesh bag as the transport packaging liners for the woven bamboo basket (kaing) against the effects of mechanical damage to Latundan bananas (Musa sapientum) during transit from Brgy. Jayubo, Lambunao, Iloilo to Iloilo Terminal Market. This contains the following series of stages during the overall conduction of the study: the preparation phase, trundling test, performance testing, and data analysis. The effects of mechanical damage are the leading causes of why damages exist on Latundan bananas (Musa sapientum) after distribution. The criteria in considering damage for Latudan bananas observed after transit are: bruises, crushed fingers, and detached fingers from a hand. During the trundling test from Brgy. Jayubo, Lambunao to Iloilo Terminal Market, there was more damage and bruises observed on the plastic sack than the mesh bag. Through performance testing, it was found that there is no significant relationship between the two liner materials. Moreover, bruises are analyzed to be the more prevalent damage among the three criteria. Therefore, the mesh bag is a better liner for kaing in protecting Latundan bananas (Musa sapientum) from mechanical damage during distribution.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Packaging Engineerin
Ileal digestibility of fermented CPU chick grower feeds enhance with natural source of methionine among two- to three month old native chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus)
Abstract onlyAmino acid plays a vital role in the development of structural tissues of chickens. Methionine is one of the essential amino acids that chickens could not synthesize thus incorporation of methionine in their diets is necessary. This study was conducted to determine the ileal digestibility of fermented CPU chick grower feeds enhanced with natural source of methionine among two to three-month old native chicken at CPUCARES Research Building on November 30, 2017 and March 27, 2018. CPU feeds mixed with 50% semi-synthetic ingredients at 50% inclusion level was sent to the University of the Philippines Visayas, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, Institute of Aquaculture Analytical Service Laboratory for amino acid analysis. The results showed that almost all amino acids, except proline and cystine were digested by the chickens. Histidine, phenylalanine, and lysine have a negative value in apparent ileal amino acid digestibility and higher amount of standardized ileal amino acid digestibility (SID) due to the higher ileal endogenous amino acid (IEAA) flow. There is 0.26% methionine found in feeds of which 24.86% were found digested by chickens. The amino acid profile of the formulated feed show that amino acids were detected but were mostly below the 70 to 90% digestibility standard.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultur
Anthelmintic activity of Areca catechu Linn. and Dioscora hispida Dennst. freeze dried extracts against Ascaridia galli S. in vitro
Abstract onlyThis study was conducted from February 12 to 14, 2019 at CPU-CARES research laboratory at the Research and Development Learning Center, Jaro, Iloilo City. The study was conducted to evaluate the in vitro anthelmintic activity of freeze dried betel nut and bitter yam extracts against adult A. galli worms. The experimental treatments were composed of 100% betel nut; 100% bitter yam; 50% betel nut and 50% bitter yam; 30% betel nut and 70% bitter yam; 70% betel nut and 30% bitter yam. Each of these experimental treatments had varying concentrations (40, 60, 80 mg/ml). Procured albendazole (commercial dewormer), Goodwin’s solution and distilled water were used as control treatments. These treatments were laid out in a completely randomized block design with three replications with four worms for every treatment in each replicate. The anthelmintic activity of extracts was assessed through percentage paralysis/death for 24- hour relative to the use of vermex at 15 mg/ml. Results of the study revealed that both plant extracts either in combination or solely used were found to be time and concentration dependent. After 24-hour exposure, percentage paralysis/death of A. galli worms treated with plant extracts was comparable to that of A. galli applied with synthetic dewormer used. However, bitter yam was a more efficient anthelmintic alternative in treating ascaridiasis in chickens than betel nut in terms of the length of time of worm paralysis.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultur
Disaster preparedness among senior nurses in selected hospitals in Kalibo, Aklan
Abstract onlyOver the years, the Philippines had been devastated by strong typhoons which led to massive flooding in low lying areas particularly in the cities of Metro Manila. As time passed by, these typhoons got stronger and stronger and became alarming. At this state, the people as well as hospitals should be prepared to reduce risks and to solve related problems. With the foregoing situations, nurses must engage in ongoing planning, development, and training on “Disaster Risk Reduction”. As Spellman (2011) said, "The challenge faced by today's nurses is to make sure which discipline-specific expertise are appropriate for an emergency response effort”. The aim of this study was to find out the level of disaster preparedness among senior nurses in selected hospitals in Kalibo, Aklan using a quantitative-descriptive-correlational design. The study utilized a questionnaire/checklist as a main tool in gathering the data. This was adapted from the Hospital Emergency Response Checklist, an all-hazards tool for hospital emergency administrators (WHO, 2011). This instrument was slightly modified by the researcher to suit the present study. In this study, it was found out that majority of the respondents was highly prepared on all seven areas and among those areas, most of the nurses were highly prepared on triage. It was also noteworthy that there is a relationship between the level of preparedness and the number of relevant trainings and seminars attended by the respondents. It is recommended that conducting trainings and staff development may help encourage nurses to keep on striving to maintain a safe workplace during disasters. This is very informative to nurses as frontlines of public health response; and to be familiar and aware of their role for them to effectively respond to a public health emergency.Includes bibliographical refencesMaster of Arts in Nursin
Ileal digestibility of CPU chick starter feeds among the one- to two-month old native chicken (Gallus gallus Domesticus) chicks
Feeds represent the greatest expenditure associated with poultry production. Methionine is one of the most limiting amino acid (AA) in poultry diet and is required for proper nutrient accretion to enhance performance, growth and development potentials of poultry. This study was conducted to identify and quantify the AA profile of fermented and non-fermented feeds and to determine the coefficient of apparent and percentage of standardized ileal amino acid digestibility of such feeds among native chicken chicks. The treatments used were the fermented and non-fermented CPU chick starter feeds with 50% semi-synthetic diet at CPU- CARES Research Building last November 23, 2017 to March 8, 2018. The feed and digesta samples were sent and analysed for their AA profile contents at University of the Philippines Visayas, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, Institute of Aquaculture Service Laboratory. Results of the study revealed that the AA in fermented feed was higher than those in the non-fermented at 0.01477% and 0.00224%, respectively. The fermented feed had the total of 0.00736% essential amino acids (EAA) and 0.00741% non-essential amino acids (NEAA). In contrast, the amino acid profile on non-fermented feed had a total EAA of 0.00164% and NEAA of 0.0006%. The results further showed that the methionine was higher in the fermented than in the non-fermented feed. The total SIAAD value for fermented was 4513.43% which is greater than that in the non-fermented feed which had only 525.38%.These indicate that the fermentation process greatly contributed to the increase of AA in the CPU chick starter feeds among the one- to two- month old native chicken chicks.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultur

This study aimed to describe the respondents’ characteristics; determine the level of knowledge of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4P’s) women grantees on Violence against Women (VAW), major form of VAW experienced and coping mechanism of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4P’s) grantees on violence against women (VAW), and the interrelationships in the level of knowledge, major form of VAW experienced, and coping mechanisms on Violence against women. This descriptive-correlational study used a one-shot survey design. Data collected from 228 women grantees were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Results revealed that the women grantees are from outside Barangays in San Miguel, less than 40 years old, with High School level of education, Roman Catholics, 5 years in the program as members, married with 4-5 children, unemployed, earned less than Php3,000.00 per month, always present during Family Development Session, and in the survival level of well-being. They had high level of level of knowledge about Violence against Women, experienced economic abuse as major form of VAW, and coped up with planful problem solving. There were no significant relationship in the level of knowledge about Violence against Women and the profile of the women grantees except for the location of the respondents, age, number of children, and their occupation. Only the respondents’ location was significantly related to major form of Violence against Women experienced by women grantees and only number of children was significantly related to their major coping mechanism. Level of knowledge about VAW was significantly related to major form of VAW experienced but was not significantly related to major coping mechanism. Major form of VAW experienced was not significantly related to major coping mechanism.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster of Science in Social Wor
Evaluation of the in vitro anthelmintic activity of Premna odorata B., Lantana camara L. and Psidium guajava L. extract against Ascaridia galli in Philippine native chicken
Abstract onlyThe study was conducted at CPU-CARES Research and Development Area, Jaro, Iloilo City from May 11 to 16, 2019. This was done to evaluate the in vitro anthelminthic activity of Premna odorata, Lantana camara, and Psidium guajava leaf extract. Physiological saline and synthetic dewormer were used as negative control and positive control, respectively. The study involved the determination of the percent worm mobility inhibition (%WMI) and percent mortality (%M). The experiment used 15 petri dishes with five roundworms each. The experimental treatments were laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Results revealed that in terms of %WMI, piperazine was the most effective at 86.67% WMI after 6 hrs. Piperazine and lantana leaf extract (LLE) were found to be statistically the same after 12 hrs and 18 hrs PE at 100% and 66.67% WMI, respectively. On the other hand, alagao leaf extract (ALE) and guava leaf extract (GLE) had the least %WMI after 12 hrs and18 hrs post exposure (PE). After 24 hrs PE, all the plant materials (LLE, ALE, GLE), showed the same effect having 66.67%, 60.00%, and 60.00% efficacy while physiological saline solution had 0% WMI. In percent mortality, piperazine was the most effective having 80% mortality, the same with alagao (ALE) and lantana leaf extract (LLE) with 26.67% and 40% mortality, respectively. However, worms exposed to guava leaf extract (GLE) and physiological saline remained alive until 24 hrs (PE). These indicate that ALE and LLE had anthelmintic activity and can be used as potential source of dewormer against A. galli.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultur
