Use of blue ternate (Clitorea ternatea Linn.) and karonda (Carissa carandas Linn.) fruit and flower extract as alternative bacterial stain
Abstract onlyIt has been known that bacterial staining is one of the fundamental procedures done when identifying microorganisms, hence, learning about it and obtaining skills to perform it has been given great importance. This activity led to the constant exposure of the students and researchers, alike, to the chemicals used to achieve results. The chemicals used, or in this case, the dyes, were synthetic in nature, thus they pose possible danger to those who are continuously using it. The purpose of this study is to determine the possibility of karonda (C. carandas) fruit and blue ternate (C. ternatea) flower crude extracts as alternative bacterial stains by observing their staining intensities on S. aureus. Methylene blue served as the positive control. Tannic acid was added as a mordant to the crude extracts and staining intensity was based on the Likert scale. Results showed that blue ternate flower had a mean score of 0.8 (low staining intensity), blue ternate with tannic acid had a mean score of 1.8 (average staining intensity) while karonda fruit crude extract had a mean score of 1.0 (low staining intensity), karonda with tannic acid had 1.2 (average staining intensity) compared to the control group which had a mean score of 3.0 (very high staining intensity. This means that the staining intensity of the crude extracts obtained from natural sources were way beyond the staining intensity of methylene blue which is of synthetic origin.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Biology with specialization in Microbiolog

Farm waste no more: Design, construction and testing of a solar-powered mobile crop residue shredder
Abstract onlyThe Philippines' development has been significantly influenced by agriculture and will remain so in the future. However, it has also been regarded as a major source of pollution. The two primary reasons were identified as the burning of farm waste and an overdependence on chemical inputs. Fuel motor oil, which is used to power conventional shredders, is known to harm the environment. The objective of this study was to build a solar-powered mobile crop residue shredder that would utilized to shred crop residual materials in order to promote the cause of environmental protection. It would provide technology to make the process of shredding such materials easier. The developed machine was successfully fabricated, assembled, and tested, with the results determining its performance, efficiency, and portability. From the parameters obtained, the device has shown an average of 550 grams per minute for grass/leaf type residue and 530 grams per two minutes for stems or twigs, and has shown high efficiency in shredding these types of materials based on the input/output ratio and weight loss from the shredding process. The device was also tested for its portability corresponding to its scope and limitation, whereby data was obtained and signifies that the shredder is indeed movable. With the mentioned results, the researchers conclude the device would be able to provide an ecological machine for ease of labor in the shredding process, which would aid in the aim of reducing the adverse effects of agricultural practices.Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineerin
