    Heritage significances of ancestral houses at the plaza complex of Pototan, Iloilo

    Abstract onlyTourism promotion of heritage sites and cultural properties is an important subset of tourist campaign in our country. There is a sizable number of tourists who travel to marvel at things that are vintage and belonging to the past. This study aimed to culturally map the ancestral houses that survived war and times along the Plaza Complex of Pototan, Iloilo with the aimed of promoting these structures as the town’s tourist attraction. This historic town of Pototan which had its share of heroine and visionary leaders boasts of a number of well-preserved pre-war structures and ancestral houses. These ancestral houses are owned by the local elite of Pototan who made a mark in the socio-economic and political life of the town and province. The study showed, that indeed, Pototan possessed such mansions and elaborate houses that had survived through time. While no structures remained intact, the fagade that survived and were rehabilitated by their owners still mirrors the greatness of what was originally built. Each house had a unique story worthy of being told.     Lived experiences of parents with deaf child

    Full text availableFor parents, raising a deaf child is a complex journey filled with unexpected obstacles, significant learning opportunities, and moments of strength and resilience. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of parents with deaf children. Five (5) participants from Iloilo were selected through purposive sampling and interviewed using semi- structured in-depth interviews. Thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke was used to analyze the qualitative data. The findings of this study showed that when parents learn their child is deaf, they experience a range of emotions, from shock and dismay to frustration and eventual acceptance, all motivated by their love for their child. This emotional journey illustrated the importance of emotional support and coping skills for parents. Effective communication with their deaf children was a major challenge, therefore mastering sign language and other approaches was important for deeper relationships. These findings emphasized the need for ongoing resources and advocacy to assist the well-being and development of deaf children and their families. Support networks, which included family, friends, the deaf community, and the government, played an important role in giving emotional, practical, and financial aid, allowing parents to feel less isolated and more empowered. The changing caregiving dynamics highlighted the value of SPED methods, caregiving awareness, and parental resilience, resulting in more effective support for deaf children and their families.     A journey within: The menopausal experience of female nurses

    Journal articleThis study attempted to answer the following questions: 1.) What does it mean to experience menopause among female nurses and, 2.) What are the essences of this experience in nurses? A qualitative study employing a phenomenological approach was used to examine and understand the experiences of these menopausal nurses. In depth face to face interview was utilized as the primary data collection method. The participants were purposely chosen, and saturation point were reached after validation of female nurses who experienced menopause. Data were analyzed using Hycner’s 14 Steps of Descriptive Phenomenological Strategy to classify and identify patterns in the data. The themes include Enervating Physical Effects of Menopause, Unpredicted Emotional Symptoms, Role Expectations Amidst Menopause, and Evolving Coping Strategies. Subthemes addressed issues like palpitations, hot flashes, irritability, feelings of inadequacy, emotional sensitivity, domestic and sexual obligations, and expectations from family and workmates. The study also highlighted various coping strategies, including family support, selfreliance, and diversions to alleviate stress. The identified themes highlighted the complex interplay of biological, cultural, and social factors influencing their lives during menopause.Central Philippine Universit

    Importance and satisfaction of non-academic services among international students

    Journal articleThis study investigated the importance and satisfaction of non-academic services among international students in Fujian Province that are available for them using a descriptive-correlational research design. A sample of 416 international students was randomly selected from a total population of 5,881. Most respondents were under 30 years old, with nearly equal gender distribution, predominantly single, pursuing undergraduate degrees across various fields, and representing diverse global regions. Their duration of stay in China varied, with a significant proportion residing for one to two years. The study highlighted high importance given to and satisfaction levels among international students regarding environmental facilities, administrative management, life services, and self-evaluation, across different demographic profiles. IPA grid analysis identified priority areas such as dormitory facilities, registration processes, scholarship policies, immigration services, security measures, networking opportunities, and diversity initiatives that significantly influenced student satisfaction. On the other hand, enhancing teaching facilities, accessibility to medical services, career planning resources, and addressing gaps in facilities and support services should be considered to improve the overall student experience in Fujian Province.Central Philippine Universit

Through interviews and observations, we hope to capture the essence of what makes pottery making in Pavia unique and valuable to its community.     Full text availableThis study aimed to determine the acceptability of Guin-Asyan Dako as a potential tourism destination using a quantitative descriptive research design. The study involved 332 respondents who were voluntarily available during its conduct. The researchers employed a probability, random sampling approach to select these respondents, ensuring a specific number based on the statistician's guidance. The selection criteria included respondents who were both available and willing to participate. For data analysis, the study utilized descriptive statistics, including frequency count, percentage, mean, and p-value. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for inferential statistics, with all tests set at a 0.05 level of significance. The results indicated a significant difference in acceptability based on age and sex, specifically in terms of accommodation, accessibility, activities, amenities, and attractions. These findings were crucial in determining the overall assessment level of Guin-Asyan Dako as a tourism destination. The study's comprehensive approach, combining robust sampling techniques and advanced statistical analysis, ensured the reliability and validity of its findings. The significant differences identified across various demographics underscore the importance of considering diverse perspectives in tourism development. This research provides valuable insights for stakeholders aiming to enhance Guin-Asyan Dako’s appeal and underscores the potential of the area to become a notable tourism destination.     Developing short-animated poetry video for Grade 7 learners' reading skill

    Full text availableThis study aimed to develop poetry videos to enhance grade 7 learners' reading comprehension through short-animated poetry videos by providing engaging and educational content for schools in Iloilo City during the school year 2023-2024. The researchers collected experiences in teaching reading and suggestions from five selected teachers and two video experts through purposive sampling to create valuable poetry videos that encouraged learners to read along and assess their reading comprehension in the process. The thematic analysis findings revealed challenges in teaching and learning reading, particularly the difficulty of addressing varying reading levels and learning styles within a single classroom setting and developing poetry videos to enhance the learner’s reading skills, fluency, and vocabulary. Additionally, learners experienced difficulties in understanding advanced vocabulary and showed limitations in reading proficiency. By leveraging multimedia tools like poetry videos, this study addressed the reading challenges and fostered an interactive learning environment that enhanced learners' interest and promoted literacy development. The study also explored various teaching strategies and methods and considered the impact of external factors on reading skills in designing the content for the animated videos. The use of short animated poetry videos as an educational tool has significant potential to enhance the reading experiences of grade 7 learners. By incorporating creativity and visual storytelling, these videos offered a multisensory learning experience beyond traditional reading. Additionally, video-based learning supports diverse learning styles and fosters personalized literacy development. In conclusion, developing short animated poetry videos for grade 7 learners represents a significant advancement in reading instruction and enhances literary appreciation.     Goat meat: Highlighting San Miguel's local cuisine

    Abstract onlyThis qualitative study delves into the narratives and experiences of key informants either the owner, cook or server who has knowledge, skills and expertise in cooking goat meat dishes. This study aimed to determine the reasons and factors that influence locals' decision to use goat meat dishes in their traditional recipes, as well as to collect stories from the participants about their history and experiences in cooking goat meat dishes. A qualitative-descriptive design was employed, using purposive sampling in selecting participants with the help of Iloilo Provincial Tourism Officer and San Miguel Municipal Tourism Officer. The researchers gathered data through interviews and narrative inquiry and utilized National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) cultural mapping (Cuisine/ Culinary Tradition). Through thematic analysis, findings reveal that preserving cultural practices has resulted in the San Miguel’s developed popularity and promotion of goat meat dishes. The findings emphasize on the primary concept, demonstrating the intergenerational transmission of goat meat processing skills within families. Elders, particularly parents and grandparents, appear to be key influencers in passing down culinary knowledge, promoting a diverse range of learning experiences. Participants underline the importance of family involvement in skill development, whether through direct observation of relatives or cooking on a regular basis. The stories usually emphasize the importance of hands-on experience, trial and error, and a constant commitment to continuing the growth of culinary skills. Moreover, goat meat's popularity in San Miguel stems from its health benefits, cultural significance, and profitability.     Work from home scheme: A phenomenological study

    Abstract onlyThis paper titled “Work from Home Scheme: A Phenomenological Study” was conducted to understand the lived experiences of employees from one of the offices of a Provincial Government in Iloilo in adapting the work from home scheme during pandemic. The study was conducted from January 2023 to December 2024 using phenomenological techniques of qualitative research. Primary data were gathered from seven (7) participants through the conduct of the interview using semi-structured interview guide. The emerging themes are as follows: (1) Navigating Blurred Boundaries in Remote Work Spaces, (2) Confronting Harsh Realities of Remote Work, (3) Coping to Survive the Work-from-Home Wilderness, (4) Navigating Work-Life Balance in a Home Environment, and (5) A Journey of the Resilient Self. This phenomenological study illuminates the complex, lived experiences of remote workers, highlighting the interplay between personal and professional lives during crisis. The study findings resonate with the Self Determination Theory, Boundary Theory, Conservation of Resources Theory, and Social Exchange Theory for understanding employees' experiences during remote work, emphasizing resilience, adaptability, resourcefulness, and reciprocal support from organizations, and colleagues. The findings provide implications for practice in the areas of organizational strategies, managerial strategies, and individual strategies. This phenomenological study illuminates the complex, lived experiences of remote workers, highlighting the interplay between personal and professional lives during crisis.     The acceptability of turnip (Brassica rapa) flour

    Abstract onlyThis study aimed to determine the acceptability of Turnip (Brassica rapa) flour. The researchers used the descriptive technique with quantitative data. The respondents of this study were fifty (50) students from the College of Medical Laboratory Science who were selected through convenience sampling. A researcher-made questionnaire was utilized in this study. Utilizing CTE’s benefit in the creation of sponge cake was the goal of this investigation. The results revealed the levels of acceptability of Turnip (Brassica rapa) flour in terms of Appearance, Aroma, Texture, Taste, and General Acceptability when grouped according to their age, sex and classification are highly acceptable. There was no significant difference in the level of acceptability in terms of appearance, aroma, texture, taste and general acceptability as perceived by the respondents when grouped according to age and sex. The results revealed that female respondents are more participative than male respondents. Furthermore, the level of acceptability as perceived by the respondents in terms of appearance, aroma, taste, texture and general acceptability plays an essential factor in product , and level of satisfaction is not affected in all different sensory characteristics and when the respondents are grouped according to age, sex and classification.
