Abstract onlyThis quantitative study evaluated the impact of graphic storytelling on the reading comprehension skills of Grade Seven learners at a Junior High School in Iloilo City. The pre-experimental design involved a purposive sample of 32 students who participated voluntarily with parental consent. The level of reading comprehension used was two traditional short stories "The Cows and the Lion" and "The Fox and the Goat” for the pretest and two graphic storytelling methods "Friend of the Rabbit" and "Bogart and Friends" for the post-test, measuring reading comprehension at literal, inferential, and evaluative levels. Data collection involved ethical approval and consent, pre-test administration, a graphic storytelling intervention, and post-test evaluation with validated quizzes and rubrics. The findings were analyzed by comparing mean index ranges across five comprehension levels: insufficient, limited, basic, proficient, and excellent. Frequency count, percentage, mean, and standard deviation calculations were utilized as statistical tools for quantitative data analysis. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Sum test, a non-parametric statistical method, was utilized to evaluate the data with a significance level set at .025. The pre-test reading comprehension skills were mainly proficient, with most students excelling in the literal level but needing enhancement in inferential and evaluative levels. In the post-test, it was revealed that students’ literal, inferential, and evaluative levels of reading comprehension enhanced, advancing to the proficient level. The mean gain results showed a positive result which indicated that there was an increase from pre-test to post-test results. Overall, there was a significant enhancement in reading comprehension skills across all levels, with p-value of 0.000 indicating the intervention's positive impact on enhancing students' reading comprehension skills. Therefore, the study rejects the null hypothesis, concluding that the intervention had a substantial positive impact on students' reading comprehension abilities.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Secondary Education Major in Englis

    Get PDF
Abstract onlyThis ethnoliterary qualitative research aimed to collect, document, and analyze select oral literature from the upland areas of Alimodian, specifically in Barangay Umingan and Sitio Balogo, Barangay Pajo. The focus was on folktales and the folk song "banggianay." Six informants were purposefully chosen based on recommendations from elders and community leaders. Data was collected through one-on-one interviews and focused- group discussions, using audio recordings. Four stories and two songs were collected, documented, and subjected to thematic analysis. Social constructionism guided data interpretation, while themes were extracted using thematic analysis. Triangulation was applied to validate the interpretation and results. Findings revealed several recurring themes: life is difficult, nature is important, magic or supernatural powers exist, the good or innocent always prevail, greed or selfishness brings loss/shame, man is the master of his own fate, adversities bring out the best in a person, true love must be willing to sacrifice, women are highly regarded, and parents are honored. Based on these themes, the following conclusions were drawn: 1) Ancient people lived a difficult life, heavily dependent on farming, fishing, and hunting due to limited resources and technology. 2) They believed in magic, spirits, and supernatural beings, attributing luck or fortune to them. 3) Ancient people valued hard work, perseverance, resilience, kindness, respect for women, and honoring parents, while discouraging selfishness, greed, and irresponsibility. 4) Ancient people were romantic lovers, with men demonstrating gentlemanly behavior, honesty, self-sacrifice, and determination. The preservation of oral traditions like folktales and Banggianay songs is vital for understanding the cultural heritage of Alimodian, as these traditions offer insights into moral lessons, social norms, historical context, and the enduring values that have shaped ancient Filipino society.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster of Arts in English Language and Literatur

Level of preparedness of public health nurses during dengue outbreak in Iloilo City

    Get PDF
Abstract onlyDengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection, can rapidly spread and potentially cause a global pandemic, necessitating careful monitoring (Aliaga-Samanez et al., 2021). Eventually, it occurred yearly, with major outbreaks occurring approximately every 3 years (Smith, 2022). This study, with an emphasis on the value of training, aimed to determine the level of preparedness of public health nurses (PHNs) in Iloilo City during dengue outbreaks. The major goal was to evaluate the impact of training on workplace safety, psychological interventions, information access, and equipment sufficiency in terms of preparedness. The study's specific objectives were to characterize PHNs' traits according to their training and ascertain whether there is a meaningful correlation between the different kinds of training and readiness levels. A descriptive-correlational design was employed, targeting all 108 public health nurses in Iloilo City, with 60 participating. Data were collected using a researcher developed questionnaire, the findings revealed a significant relationship between training levels and preparedness during dengue outbreaks. The Chi-square test, Pearson Chi-square test, using the Gamma Coefficient, and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) were used for inferential statistics, all set at 0.05 level of significance. PHNs with comprehensive training were better prepared in terms of equipment sufficiency, workplace safety, information access speed, and psychological support. Strong correlations were observed, with statistically significant gamma values (0.678 to 0.801, p < 0.05). The study highlighted the significance of inclusive training programs for public health nurses, centered on the outcomes of both prepared and unprepared nurses. It showed that training programs focusing on the Prevention and Control and Communicable Disease Control Service should be attended by the PHNs as these presented the lowest participation rates. Sufficient training bestows upon nurses the necessary competencies and expertise, augmenting their capacity to efficiently handle dengue epidemics. Enhancing public health nurses' training is essential for managing dengue outbreaks in Iloilo City because it enhances public health crisis management, safeguards community health, and lessens the impact of dengue epidemics. Better preparedness and reaction are ensured by ongoing investment in professional development, which eventually improves public health outcomes.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Nursin

Internalized misogyny and feminist consciousness among College students

    Get PDF
Abstract onlyInternalized misogyny refers to the unconscious acknowledgement of sexist ideas by women, the subliminal projection of sexist ideas onto themselves or other women, such as undermining other women or themselves, and expressing immense distaste for characteristics that are deemed to be feminine, while feminist consciousness is the awareness and criticism of patriarchy and gender inequalities; feminist consciousness also refers to feminist self-identification. There is still a gap in the literature on internalized misogyny and feminist consciousness within educational settings, despite the increase in public awareness and academic studies. Therefore, as a group of female researchers who have experienced our fair share of challenges as women, our desire for social change and societal relevance are just two of the many motivators that have driven us to conduct this study. This research paper explores the concept of internalized misogyny as well as the significance of feminist consciousness. The purpose of this study is to understand the relationship between internalized misogyny and feminist consciousness among female college students when grouped according to sexual orientation and year level. A quantitative approach was used. A survey method is used to obtain data from the selected respondents. A probability sampling method, specifically stratified random sampling, was utilized to select 305 respondents based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Feminist Consciousness Scale (FCS; Duncan et al., 2020), the Internalized Misogyny Scale (IMS; Pigott. 2004). and a demographic questionnaire were administered for the purposes of this study. As a whole, the respondents showed a low level of internalized misogyny. When determined by sexual orientation, both the queer and heterosexual female students' levels of internalized misogyny were low. In its entirety, the respondents showed a moderate level of feminist consciousness. Moreover, across all categories, the respondents maintained the same level of feminist consciousness—sexual orientation and year level alike. There is a significant relationship between the levels of internalized misogyny and feminist consciousness among female college students. The Pearson's coefficient of -.238 indicates that there is a weak negative correlation (LaMorte, 2021; Miyamoto et al., 2017; Meghanathan, 2016). The study concludes that female college students who have lower levels of feminist consciousness might be more vulnerable to internalizing misogyny from their personal experiences with sexist comments and encounters in their personal lives.Bachelor of Science in Psycholog
