Transforming movement assessment in physical therapy through subaquatic data collection
This study explored the interest and perceived barriers to integrating subaquatic diagnostic technologies (SDTs) into hydrotherapy among licensed physical therapists. Seventeen semi-structured interviews were conducted using a mixed-methods design, with 15 interviews included in the final analysis. Quantitative data were analyzed using chi-square tests, while qualitative responses were coded thematically. Results indicated no statistically significant relationships between SDT interest and career stage or hydrotherapy access, though qualitative data highlighted concerns about cost, limited access, and usability. Despite mixed interest in adoption, participants identified several potential benefits of SDTs, including improved treatment tailoring, increased patient buy-in, and enhanced outcome monitoring. Functional mobility consistently emerged as a therapeutic goal, with participants emphasizing the need for tools that improve real-world outcomes. Findings suggest that while interest in SDTs exists, broader implementation will depend on improving access, cost-efficiency, and integration into clinical workflows. Future research should focus on usability, efficiency, and return on investment
Detection, occupancy, and abundance of vultures in Mississippi
The purpose of this study was to examine influences of tree cover, light pollution, average ambient air temperature, and roadkill abundance on Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) and Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) detection, occupancy, and abundance within Mississippi. Data was collected via road surveys. Highways were selected as transects of 290 m in length to survey for vultures and roadkill. The locations of detected vultures were GPS marked. To evaluate relationships of vulture detection, occupancy, and abundance with the covariates, I used dynamic occupancy models and open binomial N-mixture models. Average ambient air temperature had a positive relationship with Black Vulture detection during the breeding season, and roadkill abundance had a positive relationship with Turkey Vulture detection. A complex negative relationship existed between vulture occupancy and abundance and percent tree cover, and light pollution exhibited a negative relationship with Turkey Vultures but a positive one with Black Vultures
The evaluation of tetflupyrolimet in rice (Oryza sativa)
The evolution of resistance to many herbicide modes of action (MOA) threatens the utility of synthetic herbicides. Barnyardgrass control in rice has become increasingly difficult due to resistance to common herbicides, and no novel MOA has been introduced in 30 years. FMC Corporation recently discovered tetflupyrolimet (Dodhylex™ active), a Group 28 herbicide that inhibits dihydroorotate dehydrogenase. In 2023 and 2024, studies were conducted at the Delta Research and Extension Center in Stoneville, MS, to evaluate tetflupyrolimet for midsouthern U.S. rice production. The first study evaluated barnyardgrass control and rice tolerance with single and sequential applications of tetflupyrolimet with clomazone and other residuals. The second examined safety across eight rice cultivars. The third tested low rates of tetflupyrolimet and clomazone in four common midsouthern row crops at preemergence and postemergence timings. Tetflupyrolimet improved barnyardgrass control and did not cause injury or yield loss, offering a promising new tool for rice systems
Raspberry cultivar evaluation trial in Mississippi
Raspberries (Rubus idaeus) are valued for their flavor, appearance, and nutritional quality. This study evaluated 26 raspberry cultivars over two seasons (2023 and 2024) in Mississippi under a 50% shade-covered system, using organic and conventional fertilization in 7-gallon containers. Cultivars included floricane- and primocane-fruiting types. Data collected included harvest timing, yield, berry weight, soluble solids content (°Brix), titratable acidity, total phenolic content (TPC), and total flavonoid content (TFC). Results showed cultivar differences in yield, berry quality, and antioxidant levels. In 2023, conventionally fertilized plants produced higher yields; in 2024, fertilizer had no impact. Late-season harvests had elevated phytochemicals. ‘Prelude,’ ‘Nova,’ and ‘Polka’ yielded higher across both years, while ‘Jewel’ and ‘Bristol’ had the highest TPC and TFC, especially under organic conditions. This study highlights the potential of ‘Prelude,’ ‘Nova,’ and ‘Himbo Top’ in Mississippi’s warm climate and emphasizes the need for multi-year evaluations to inform local southern growers
Evaluating the impacts of cover crops at different nitrogen rates on soil microbial dynamics within a sweetpotato production system
A field study was conducted from 2023 to 2024 at Pontotoc, Mississippi, to evaluate the effects of cover crops and nitrogen (N) fertilizer on soil microbial communities in sweet potato production. The study followed a randomized split-block design with three cover crops (Clover, Wheat, and Fallow) and three N rates (0, 50, and 100 lb N acre⁻¹), each replicated four times. Soil samples were collected at cover crop termination, sweet potato planting, and harvest. Bacterial and fungal communities were analyzed using Illumina HiSeq sequencing. Soil properties such as total carbon, total nitrogen, pH, POXC, and microbial activity (AWCD) were also measured. Cover crop and nitrogen treatments affected microbial diversity and soil properties. Clover plots had higher carbon, nitrogen, and labile carbon levels, supporting greater fungal diversity. Bacterial communities responded more to nitrogen fertilizer, especially early in the season, while fungal communities were more influenced by cover crop treatments. Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota were the dominant bacterial phyla, and Ascomycota dominated the fungal groups. Overall, integrating legume cover crops with balanced nitrogen application improved soil health by enhancing microbial diversity and activity
