    Get PDF
The study entitled ’A comparative semantic analysis of personal names in Igbo and Tiv’ is relevant because the available literature at the disposal of the researchers do not treat the semantics of Igbo and Tiv personal names from the comparative perspective. Hence, the present study is designed to examine the personal names in Igbo and Tiv with the aim of discovering the similarities and differences between Igbo and Tiv personal naming systems. The study is predicated on LoCatsro (2012) notion of Anthropological Pragmatics. LoCatsro notion holds that the interpretation of semantic elements and properties are based on cultural peculiarities that can only be understood using the link between culture and contextual meaning of words. The conceptual framework supports the present study because it accounts for the existing personal names in Igbo and Tiv. The personal names in Igbo and Tiv, which are means of group and individual identities, usually reflect the experiences, wishes, religious beliefs, expectations, opinions, advice and caution among the peoples. The findings of the study show that the naming systems for the Igbo and Tiv personal names share some similarities based on the belief in God Almighty, philosophy about life, importance of children, circumstances surrounding the birth of a baby or the parents at the time of the childbirth. On the contrary, the naming systems of Igbo and Tiv differ due to certain beliefs that are peculiar to the Igbo and the Tiv peoples respectively

Financial globalization has drawn so much attention and has been identified as the major cause of the global financial crisis. With clear evidence of financial globalization in Nigeria, agreement on the magnitude and net effect on the nation’s economic sectors has not received more research attention. This article aims to investigate how Nigeria\u27s sectoral performances are impacted by financial globalization. The sectors of interest include Trade, Agriculture, Construction, Industrial and Service. Annual Time series data for the period, 1981-2019 was analysed using a Classical Linear Regression Method in an Error Correction Framework. Results established a strong significant association between financial globalization, construction and trade sectors. It indicates the insignificant consequences of financial globalization on the industrial, service, and agricultural sectors, respectively. The result further finds that terms of payment impact the agricultural sector, while terms of trade impact the industrial sector, respectively. The exchange rate is the only variable that shows a significant negative impact on the five selected sectors. The article suggests that government and monetary authorities concentrate on stabilizing the currency rate since doing so improves terms of trade, builds local capacity, and boosts sectoral performances

There is little information on Contemporary Ghanaian artists in the form of literary presentations and documentation. Isaac Opoku-Mensah is one great personality whose contribution to the development of Ghanaian sculpture and the field of bust sculpture deserves to be recognized, celebrated, and studied. This is a biographic study that focuses on his profile and contributions to academia as well as his sculptural art technique. It looks at some of his creative works, the techniques he used, and his influence on his students and the next generation of sculptural artists. The qualitative research design was used to conduct an iconographic analysis of three specific sculptural pieces as part of an empirical artistic study. Research instruments such as in-depth interviews, observation, and photography were utilised to gather the required data for the study.  The paper also appreciates Isaac Opoku-Mensah\u27s sculptural pieces through Erwin Panofsky\u27s iconographic analysis, which has three levels: pre-iconographical description, iconographical analysis, and iconological interpretation. The findings among others indicated that there were detailed interpretations of the busts of three murdered Judges, a cocoa farmer, and academic graduands which aimed at comprehending the images’ visual elements and performing a formal analysis of its physical manifestation, followed by an iconographic analysis in which the images were linked to a known story or recognizable character, and finally, an iconological analysis in which the meaning of the artefacts was determined in relation to its social, cultural, and historical contexts

Through the findings, this paper establishes that the art of Kete weaving in the Akatsi District is a fertile industry that when expanded and sustained can help create more jobs, thus reducing the poverty rate and improving the standard of living. The Commission for Technical and Vocational Educational Training (CTVET) needs to provide the weavers with additional training on creativity for a wider market target. Get PDF
This study in Abakiliki L.G.A of Ebonyi State examined factors influencing the output of local rice. A research survey design was used for the study and fifty (50) local rice farmers were randomly selected from 17 different communities in Abakaliki LGA. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression were employed in the data analysis. Results showed that most of the rice farmers sampled were of their active age with an average of 35 years. The respondents possessed one educational qualification or the other. The Size of the farm, labour input, capital inputs, and cost of seeds exerted significant influence in explaining the variations in the quantity of local rice produced. The R2 (0.766), showed that 76.6% of the variations in the output of local rice were captured by the explanatory variables. It is recommended that local rice farmers increase their small farm sizes either through the acquisition of more lands directly or through government efforts at a fee. Furthermore, since labour input significantly influenced the output of Local rice it is recommended that skilled labour be attracted into local rice production through increased remuneration of labour in rice production. Capital inputs should be increased in the study area probably through credit liberalization or skewing of credit supply in favour of local rice production to enable the farmers to hire skilled labour needed to boost rice output

Improved Yuanpei computer science teaching: For secured development of developing countries

This paper digs into the developmental strides achieved by some countries through the use of skill-oriented computer education. The involvement of the various governments through policy making, implementation, monitoring, funding, curriculum amendments, liberalization of computer science undergraduate program structure, the introduction of skill-oriented projects, is x-rayed. These parameters provide insight into the successful outcomes of these economies through investments in Computer education. The methodology adopted is a review of literature on various Computer Education Policies, Implementation methods adopted, as well as monitoring methods for sustainability. Our findings show that three reviewed Countries were able to develop skills through the researcher’s computer education, that took over the technology world and helped advance their economies. While China focused on Hardware through task-free and funding of hardware-producing companies, the UK, through Raspberry Pi, focused on teacher and students’ training in Software development. The United States on the other hand focused on Research and development and making ICT passing a prerequisite for college. The researcher recommends: Redesign of computer curriculum to teach coding to primary and secondary school students, training of teachers in specialized computer areas, and have them replicate the knowledge to other teachers, federal funding and monitoring of new computer education policies, including a minimum of a credit pass in computer subject as a prerequisite for studying computer science. Finally, the adoption of accelerated skill-based teaching of Computer science in core areas of beneficial disruptive Technology, through an intensive program such as “Yuanpei” would transform and cause desired sustainable development

The thin line between earth and life

The Earth is reportedly perilously close to a tipping point that would drive the planet into an irreversible condition that might be catastrophic for humankind if it were to be reached. A group of scientists from all over the world has come together to make this claim. It is thought that the Earth is about to go through changes on a global scale, which would have an effect not only on the global ecosystems of animals and plants but also on the global water and food supply. In a conference, it was reported that within the next 40 years, there would be a 50% increase in the demand for potable water, a 70% increase in the demand for food, and a roughly 100% increase in the energy demand. All of these will take place at the same time as we need to take action to address issues such as climate change, the depletion of rivers and aquifers, and the destruction of forests. This article has proposed for a call to enlighten people in the academic community to be a part of the solution and, at the very least, perhaps undertake mitigation activities to bend the curve of constantly rising numbers for greenhouse gases, ecological footprint, and environmental damage
