The main functionalities of media systems across the divides
No full textThis article is a broad-stroke review of the universally agreed-upon functions of the media systems. The review is guided by a framework that merges a variety of media models from a range of disciplines addressing the multiple issues of media content, context, and its functions. Arguably, such merger occurs across historical periods, national boundaries, and disciplinary perspectives, otherwise called across the global digital divides. Important beautiful and dreadful events occur regularly across all regions in the world. There is consensus that these events cannot make the news unless they reach the vast majority of the audience and, by extension, the larger public. Since news is an event shared via a medium, media systems should invest in collecting relevant facts, evidence, and impressions that can later be translated into the story carrying the news. A media system is expected to play an essential role in ensuring that the human person can see, hear, touch, and connect with other people. Indeed, it is through such a process that we can all come to the realization, that journalism can be informative, balanced, and well-informed. Such a line of reasoning forms a backdrop for developing an argument that, as of today, journalism comes in a variety of forms. Within the context of such an argument that this paper is qualitatively developed through an integrative literature review to look at the greater influence of media systems across the global digital divides. The paper establishes that media systems play an essential role in many areas including linkages, policies, politics, literacy, socialization, and development. It behooves, in this regard, each nation to facilitate the establishment of a media system that is necessary and desirable for achieving its needs
Sustaining development in Nigeria through liberal democracy
Get PDFDevelopment is a pivotal process for human existence. The unique feature of the development is that it involves an active engagement of everybody. In Nigeria, the situation is different because, with the inception of self-rule particularly the return of full democracy in 1999, the system of politics disguisedly revolves around the interests of the few (bourgeois). National interests are handled like private property by the selected few who came into power on the basis of socio-economic status, tribe, and religion. However, people who are supposed to contribute to the transformation of the state are neither not voted into power because of their tribe nor allowed to participate in national decisions. Nigerian politics in a nutshell stifled all efforts of true democratization because of greed which sidelines the welfare of the masses. Advocates of development insist that the process can only be sustained in a society where there is a principle of equal opportunities. By this, the principles of right, law, and government should aim at shielding different personalities as illustrated in the principles of liberal democracy. Liberal democracy maintains a political value that incorporates equality and widens the horizon for religious, economic, political, and intellectual freedom of citizens. It is on this basis that this study suggests liberal democracy as a vital system which can transform the socio-economic and political situation of Nigeria. The study recommends that to sustain development in Nigeria, stakeholders should prioritize the welfare of the civil society against material gains and selfish interests of the few elites
Variation in Nigerian undergraduate competence in English writing based on ethnic group
Get PDFThe purpose of this study was to investigate variation in Nigerian undergraduate students’ competence in English writing based on their ethnic grouping. The study is guided by EAP and ethnolinguistic repertoire theories. It adopted a descriptive type of quantitative research design in the process of data collection using a stratified purposive sampling strategy. The samples include a total of 402 heterogeneous students (134 each from Hausa, Igbo and Yorùbá ethnic groups). In essence, two research instruments were used in this study, including descriptive writing and an adapted rubric. A one-way ANOVA parametric test was carried out. The findings reveal a statistical level of variation across the three ethnic groups (N=402, F=21.89, df=2, p=.000). Thus, the results indicate that ethnicity plays a crucial role on the Nigerian student’s competence in English writing. The pedagogical implication of this study suggests developing Nigerian undergraduate students’ emotional, cognitive and behavioural dispositions and developing their mind settings (having a set of right attitude) to practice and learn English writing
New normal educational system as a response to COVID-19 pandemic: Factors & outcomes
No full textThe world trembled as a contagious disease was anonymously spreading around the world. This so-called COVID-19 pandemic affected millions of lives, thousands of routine systems, and hundreds of economic factors that included the movement of educational systems all over the world. To follow the protocol of the nation one is in, one needs to stay at home to prevent the spread of viruses and follow the policies, including the prohibition of gatherings such as parties and sessions with multiple individuals in a group. This paper sought to understand the new normal educational system implementation and its hindering factors; the effectiveness of new pedagogical strategies; and most of all, the academic evaluation of learning that includes the response of the learners to the new educational system in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic happenings

Artistic expressions with the use of costumes in selected Ghanaian video films: The freedom and responsibilities of the costumier as an artist
Get PDFThe increase in advertisements for newly produced films in Ghana is a testament that the Ghanaian film industry has become one of the fastest growing businesses in the country. Contemporary film producers or directors have continued the tradition of their forebears in the use of various traditional visual elements of communication, particularly the use of costumes. Costumes are powerful visual elements employed in film productions for effective characterization and to offer vital narrative cues to viewers. While acknowledging that costumiers have the freedom to express themselves in constructing costumes, both for utilitarian and aesthetic purposes, it is equally important for such artistic expressions to be accompanied by some responsibilities to social norms. Employing a qualitative approach and relying on purposive sampling to sample two Ghanaian video films, this study relied on content analysis to explore how costumes have been used in films. Anchored on the theory of representation, the study contributes to the ongoing debate on the ways in which costumes are used in video film productions. The findings revealed that some costumiers in the third historical phase of film making in Ghana have not articulated their artistic freedoms and equal responsibilities associated with costuming films. This calls for regular in-service training and workshops for costumiers
Influence of socioeconomic characteristics on artisanal fishing in Andoni L. G. A. of Rivers State, Nigeria
No full textRivers State possesses abundant natural and ecological resources for sustainable fish production in Nigeria, but the overall output level implied that these resources had not been optimized. Therefore, research is needed to isolate the missing link in the artisanal fish production value chain. The study examined the impact of socioeconomic characteristics on artisanal fish production among fisher folks in Andoni Local Government Area, Rivers State, Nigeria. Thirty artisanal fisher folks randomly selected from four communities through structured questionnaires and interview schedules were used for the study. Descriptive statistics involving frequencies and percentages and regression equations were utilized in the analysis. Age, household size, educational level, Artisanal fishing experience and extension contact played significant roles in determining the output and gross income of artisanal fishermen folks in Andoni L.G.A. To change the direction of management of affairs towards increased artisanal fishery in Rivers State, Nigeria, the study recommended that relevant government agencies saddled with the responsibility of making and implementing decisions in the fishery sub-sector should give pride of place to variables such as age, household size, educational level, Artisanal fishing experience and extension contact
Stylistic analysis of Tivisms in select Nigerian novels

Stylistic analysis of Tange’s The Legitimate Candidate, Shija’s Whispers of Distant Drums, Gar’s The Blood of the Ram, Kwaghchimin’s A Star of Hope, Tijah’s Slow Men at Work and Norya’s The Luminous Flame resonates with unique expressions which express Tivness. The study investigates the significance of semantic devices in the select novels using Style as a Manner of Expression Model. Methodologically, this study used primary and secondary sources of data. The data for analysis are Tivisms in the select novels. Tivisms refer to Tiv words, expressions, exclamations or interjections, phrases and sentences, unique narrative, dramatic and poetic techniques that are used in literary works talk about Tiv people, culture and language. The study shows that Tivisms serve the following purposes: identity construction, multimodality, beautification, speech flavour and local colour. The paper contributes the literature on language use in Nigerian or African literature
Climate change and agriculture: Analysis and implication on South Africa

Agricultural sector is anticipated to be adversely impacted by environmental change both in the present and in the future, thereby negatively impacting means livelihood and food security. Agriculture undoubtedly is a vital economic factor, and means of livelihoods in South Africa. Because Climate change is expected to reduce crop yields in South Africa, thus affecting food security and livelihood, adaptation strategies need to be implemented to mitigate climate change effects. This paper gives a detailed analysis and implications of environmental change effects on agriculture sectors and significance for achieving growth results such as food security, poverty alleviation, and sustainability in South Africa. Future Prospects for South Africa show decreased rainfall, rising heat, and high unpredictability for the better part of the area coupled with severe declines on the drier and marginal western areas, hence it will affect food security. These consequences has great effects for farming production in South Africa. As a result, South Africa is expected to see 10% to 50% reductions in agricultural output, a situation that might increase food insecurity in the region. By perfecting knowledge through educational institutions, knowledge will be raised concerning the impact of climate change and how to militate against present and anticipated circumstances
Children’s reactions to ‘Taste is the difference’ indomie instant noodles television commercial in Nigeria: Anambra State in focus
No full textThis study evaluated children\u27s responses to the \u27Taste is the difference\u27 Indomie Instant noodles television commercial in Anambra State, Nigeria. It is premised on the background that children who live and interact with other members of society cultivate different behaviours after exposure to media content. There is a need to control the spread of unethical media content for children\u27s safety, cultivating acceptable socio-cultural behaviours and positive development. The study hinged on Cultivation and Social Learning Theories and adopted the Focus Group Discussion research method with structured questions as a data collection instrument. Multi-stage sampling techniques were used to select 364 primary six pupils as respondents from three schools in the three senatorial districts of Anambra State, Nigeria, on consent from relevant authorities. Findings show that respondents were significantly exposed to the select commercial; there was a high recall of message elements. The respondents were also found to be favourably disposed to the message elements and perceived some elements as imperfect because they eroded aspects of their culture. The study concludes that the select respondents responded positively to the entertainment aspect and negatively to the cultural implication of the commercial. The study recommended amendments to message elements in the commercial that eroded some aspects of Nigerian culture
