Executive immunity clause and its effects on the fight against corruption in Nigeria
No full textThe Nigerian 1999 Constitution enshrined an outrageous and controversial clause known as the ‘Immunity Clause’ in Section 306 of the Constitution which provides maximum protection for the executive office holders at the Federal and State levels. Hence, the President, Vice President, Governors and their Deputies are immune from any investigation or sanction during their tenure in office even if they commit an offence or a breach of trust such as corruption. This study analysed critically the provision of the immunity clause and its effects on engendering corruption by the executive office holders in Nigeria. The study empirically examined top political office holders who hold executive offices from 1999 to 2020 that were under investigation for protected corrupt practices during their office days. The study utilised the secondary sources of data collection because the paper is a conceptual descriptive one. Sources such as books, journal articles, newspapers, reports and internet sources are utilised. Elite Theory was used to strengthen the literature in the work. The data collected were analysed and interpreted using content analysis where discussions and interpretations were made using the context of the existing knowledge for contribution. The work discovered that the presence of the immunity clause is preventing the fight against corruption from being actualised and it is helping in escalating corrupt practices. The work recommends among other suggestions that the clause should be removed and allow the executive office holders to face their actions even while in office to ensure transparency
Guidelines and a software tool for quality assessment of BPMN business process models
Get PDFThis paper considers the problem of quality measurement of Business Process Model and Notation business process models. Business process models presented using BPMN and other notations are graphical schemes similar to flowcharts or UML (Unified Modeling Language) activity diagrams utilized in software engineering. Business process modeling strives to capture current enterprise workflows for analysis and improvement using automation through workflow systems deployment. Therefore, designed high-quality business process models have to be understandable and maintainable. It can help efficiently identify and replace all “weak spots” of described organizational workflows with more efficient solutions. Whereas business process models which are not understandable, unstructured and uncertain may cause even more errors than benefits. Therefore, this study proposes guidelines and a software tool for errors detection in business process models
Internet-mediated Language and style in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah
Get PDFThe astounding development in Information Communication Technology (ICT) has transformed all fields of human endeavours and provided various media that writers employ in their literary texts. As rich as internet-mediated language and style are in the study of Adichie’s Americanah, there are paucity of scholarly studies that discussd their linguistic features and relevance. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the aspects of internet-mediated language and style used in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah. This study adopted Computer-mediated Communication (CMC) and this theory is dichotomised into synchronous and asynchronous modes. Synchronous modes comprise telephone conversations and instant messaging whereas asynchronous modes include e-mails, blogs and text messages. Methodologically, this study selected Adichie’s Americanah as a primary source using judgemental sampling. The documentary sources were obtained via journal articles, textbooks, dictionaries, dissertations and theses that boosted this study’s review. As for data presentation and analysis, the author read Americanah; selected Internet-mediated (IM) features; classified them into blogs, e-mails, text messages and telephone conversations and analysed them. One of the findings is that IM style saves time and enhances quick narration than letters. Secondly, the domestication of IM jargons in Americanah also indicates that the language of ICT is relevant in literature. Lastly, IMC is a recent style that Adichie employs in Americanah. This study will have tremendous impacts on English, Linguistics, Mass Communication, ICT and Literature students, researchers, scholars and lecturers
The honorific styles of the etnolinguistic communities: An ethnography
Get PDFThe purpose of this descriptive-qualitative study with ethnographic design was to explore the extant honorific styles of the identified ethnolinguistic communities. Data from 37 selected participants from the Mandaya, Kagan, and Mansaka Tribes of Tagum City who took part in the KII and FGD interview using validated qualitative interview guide pointed to insight. Based on the analyses of data, the findings reveal the existence of the following appellative honorifics: Kinship, Sub-kinship, Rank, Aged, Professional, No Naming, and Identity Honorifics in the Mandaya, Kagan, and Mansaka Tribes of Tagum City. Moreover, it is also found that bound morpheme markers such as ma, dag, da, pyag, an, gi, on, ka, di, and ba exist in the dialects of the ethnolinguistic communities which describe and define the person’s characteristics and abilities in the honorific styles
Picaresque narrative techniques and popular literature in African prose fiction
Get PDFThe Picaresque tradition is a mode of writing that began in Spain in the 16th century and flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries throughout the rest of Europe. It is a literary tradition that has continued to influence modern fiction writing to date. The current paper examined the picaresque and popular African literature narrative techniques through conducting an in-depth analysis of the following texts; Kill Me Quick, Mission to Kala, The Angels Die, and A Sport of Nature. To effectively address the task, the study examined narratives and narrative techniques in the prose fiction under study. The paper then deployed the Structural Literary Theory in an effort to decode the intertextuality between the texts. The study established that the texts under study are interconnected through the main characters, especially the picaro/picara. An examination of Gustav Freytag’s narrative structure was conducted and similarities and differences in the narrative structures of the texts under study was observed. The Postcolonial Literary Theory was also consulted where specific strands of the theory as propounded by Vorn Gorp, and Frantz Fanon were blended to furnish the study with the necessary theoretical backbone to exhaustively study picaresque narratives in popular literature. In conclusion, the study established that the Picaresque and Popular Literature writing modes are interconnected through the use plot and main characters. The study also established that the non-linear and episodic plot structures are the most commonly used techniques in picaresque and popular writing modes
A critical review on women are warmer but no less assertive than men: Gender and language on Facebook
No full textGender disparities in language have a long history, spanning subjects such as gender studies, psychology, linguistics, communication, and computational linguistics. Gender differences have been a source of contention in the past, but a consensus has evolved that gender is still an important characteristic deserving of scientific inquiry. This critical review aimed to critique and analyze the study about gender and language on Facebook. Based on their research, they discovered that men and women use language differently with the greatest difference being in the degree of interpersonal friendliness. Self-identified females used language that was warmer, friendlier, and more focused on people, whereas self-identified males used vocabulary that was more socially detached, disagreeable, and focused on items. Women, contrary to popular belief, were slightly more forceful in their discourse than men. They discovered affiliative and assertive language through automated assessments rather than human judgments, which are more susceptible to rater bias. With this, the researchers somewhat open our minds to the idea that men and women do have their own content, conversational styles, and attitudes towards speaking with others

The outbreak has disrupted family routines and not only caused pestilential effects to human health, but also catalyzed adverse effects to the economy and the educational system. In the Philippines, schools were closed and such all activities relative to education. With this, educational sectors offered different learning modalities to direct teaching-learning instruction. Two of the learning modalities utilized by university students are the online distance learning and limited face-to-face classes. In these learning setups, teachers and students are greatly affected, considering their needs and support. Nonetheless, this article explores the financial and psychological implications of COVID-19 pandemic among university students during the course of navigating the educational spectrum amidst stupendous and unfavorable phenomena that transpired in the global history
Production subcontracting and the distribution of industrial activities in Onitsha metropolis Anambra State, Nigeria
Get PDFAbstract Subcontracting is becoming increasingly significant and important in today\u27s economic world. It emphasizes the importance of improved collaboration, coordination, and adaptability among production entities such as industries, businesses, and institutions. Although production subcontracting has sparked a lot of debate on a broad level, there has been relatively little research done on it in terms of industrial activity. This paper analysed the role of production subcontracting in the distribution of industrial activities in Onitsha Metropolis, Anambra State, Nigeria. While the study adopted a survey research design and a questionnaire survey of 115 industries, charts, percentages and tables were used to show results. The result of the study showed that 49.9% of the industries subcontracted manufacturing activities, while 26.7%, 5% and 1.7% of the surveyed industries subcontracted maintenance, technical development and distribution/marketing industrial activities respectively. The paper recommended that production subcontracting be made a deliberate government policy so as to propel the growth of service industries/subcontracting industries in Nigeria
Impact evaluation of households participation in agriculture on welfare in Ghana
Get PDFThe role of agriculture in Ghana’s economic development cannot be overstated as it is a major contributor to GDP and employs more people in the rural areas thereby improving on their welfare. However, the sector’s performance in recent time has declined as poverty incidence has remained high among rural agriculture households. This study, therefore, examines how participation in agriculture activities impact households’ welfare in Ghana using the seventh edition of Ghana Living Standard Survey (GLSS) dataset conducted in 2016/2017. The Heckman probit model is applied to determine the drivers of households\u27 probability of engaging in agriculture. The propensity scores matching technique is used to match the farming households to their replica non-farming households as counterfactuals to ascertain the welfare impact of the households. The result shows that the welfare of households in agriculture is multidimensionally deprived than non-agriculture households. In addition, factors such as size of household, sex and age of household head, age at first marriage, location, ethnicity, and educational level of household heads have the likelihood of influencing agriculture participation in Ghana. Therefore, by modernising agriculture to enhance value addition through technology, irrigation, financing and marketing to boost agribusinesses would enhance the welfare in the agriculture households

Modern scientists are strongly convinced that the human genes (in philosophical terms) are the basic substratum of the human nature, hence, research in human genome holds the master key towards uncloaking the incredible secret of human life, health and disease. The marvelous prospect of this emerging ontological approach in medicine that makes it relishing and fascinating is such that apart from being curative, it is also both preventive and regenerative. Through the aid of expository analytical method, this study reveals that there has been a renewed and increasing interest in bio-medicine, especially in stem cells research and embryology. Consequently, deducing from the findings of this study, this paper argues that, given the credible antecedences of scientific research and predictions, if the recesses of the human genes are penetrated and concealed data retrieved, the future of mankind promises to be relishing in the bosom of biomedicine; because diseases, aging, and most probably death would be overcome by mankind
