    No full text
Caring, affection, sympathy, commonality, and togetherness are some of the good qualities and attributes of Africans for centuries. Africans use words and sympathy to heal wounds and broken hearts. These attributes are elements of Ubuntu that are socially inbuilt in Africans. African forefathers use the above qualities and attribute to build their families and communities, also, to fight and win wars. The spirit of Ubuntu promotes care, concern, and engagement for one another (Mungai, 2009; Chaplin, 2006). Africans are known for the practice of Ubuntu, which is the interconnection and concern from person to person. Ubuntu is an African philosophy on the practice of humanity and social affection for one another. Digitalization continues to make waves across Africa. Globally, we live in the digital world, global village, connected world, and even social media world (social media age), and so on; humans, specifically Africans, are digitally connected. The human world today is more connected than before because of social media platforms and other digital tools. Social media has become critical interconnectivity, communication tool, and communication highway for Africans within and outside Africa

The paper seeks to identify and describe the design elements and principles that contribute to the festival\u27s success and pageantry. The study employed qualitative research, using Hogbe festival as a case study. The qualitative research was used for the study because it allowed for detailed description of events of the festival and facilitated close interactions between the researchers and the participants in their natural settings. Thirty-five (35) participants were purposively chosen, and data were collected using a semi-structured interviews, field notes, photography, and participant and non-participant observations. According to the results, the inhabitants of the locality profited through social, cultural, economic, political and spiritual means as a result of their commitments to this cultural heritage. The art forms on display, the appearance, and understanding of the celebration\u27s socio-cultural significance were among the observations conducted.  The findings also indicated that, throughout the festival\u27s celebration, the chiefs\u27 procession and entourage display line, space, colour, variety, rhythm, line, dominance, and unity among others.  It is recommended that the Battor Traditional Council, Hogbe planning committee, the North Tongu District Assembly, business community in the area, creative art industry, Ghana Tourism Authority, civil society organizations, and the general public should maintain the various activities that characterize the celebration in order to bring about beauty, appreciation and preservation of cultural heritage for the study area

Relief modelling using the Chiaroscuro technique: A project work among student-sculptors

    Get PDF
Relief modelling is a very peculiar task that requires the creation of three-dimensional forms onto two dimensional surfaces to depict depth and volume in a composition. Preliminary research revealed that students in the Sculpture section in the Department of Painting and Sculpture in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology faced the challenge of producing relief sculptural pieces to give them the three dimensionality that suggests volume and depth. This project work that utilized studio-based research approach rooted in the constructivism theory was aimed at experimenting on how to overcome the flaws in relief modelling using the chiaroscuro technique. Twelve (12) student-sculptors participated in this project using the stratified sampling technique. They were taken through practical sessions in modelling compositions of geometric forms, still-life, and human figures, with drawn or image references with the chiaroscuro technique as the focus. After the project, the student-sculptors were able to interpret the illusion of three-dimensionality in picture reference into the actuality of depth and volume during modelling, rendering compositions in its right planes or surfaces. The study recommends the application of the chiaroscuro technique in relief sculptural practices such as relief carving, repoussé, and other relief related sculptural practices

Conflicts occur between people, institutions, tribes and nations and cold be resolved when language and dialogue are effectively used. Peace linguistics and traditional ways of conflict resolutions in Terver T. Udu’s Ikyav Saan Aga Saan and Sam Patrick Terngu’s Adezungwen examines the causes of conflicts, explores the language of hate speech and states traditional ways of resolving conflicts in the select texts. This study adopts Coleman’s (2006) Human Relations Paradigm (HRP) for conflict resolution. The model emphasises the prominent roles that human social interactions play in resolving conflicts. The model uses mediation, integrative negotiation and constructive controversy as parameters for conflict resolution. Methodologically, this study used purposive sampling technique. The choice of the two select texts was deliberate hence the texts are laced with conflicts and how they were amicably resolved using traditional methods. The study used primary and documentary sources. The primary sources are Udu’s Ikyav Saan Aga Saan and Terngu’s Adezungwen while the documentary sources are journal articles, theses, glossary and textbooks. As data analysis, the select texts were read, data relating to causes, language of hate speech and resolution of conflicts were grouped and translated into English and then analysed. It was revealed that domestic conflicts could be resolved using human relation mechanism and nonviolent communication. This study has presented Tiv culture where the voices of the elders are respected and their decisions were unanimously accepted. Finally, peace repairs broken relationships and enhances progress. Traditional rulers should apply the solutions proffered by Terver Udu and Sam Paddy Terngu in their fictional texts to resolve conflicts in their domains

Before the coming of modern drugs circulating now all over the world, traditional plants were in existence. The parts of the plants mostly used are root, stem bark, stem, flower, fruits and seed are ingredients of orthodox medicines. The components of phytochemical signify the healing value of plants. Phytochemical performs physiological activities on the human system; some of the significant phytochemical are flavonoids, alkaloids, phenolic and tannins compounds. In this research, the GC-MS of Daniella Oliveri ethyl acetate stem bark extract revealed 49 bioactive components, δ-cadinene and ϒ-Muurolene, having the highest percentage among other antioxidant compounds. The acetylcholinesterase (AChE) donepezil used to examine the inhibition activity shows a linear progression with the D. Oliveri extracts. Even though there is extensive information on the ethnopharmacological uses of D. Oliveri, there is a shortage of scientific reports on the anti-fungal properties of the plant, therefore, this study aimed at evaluating the biochemical compositions of the plant in order to ascertain its ethnomedicinal use in the treatment of skin ailments and others diseases

    Get PDF
Education remains a key factor in human capital accumulation development. Owing to its impact on economic growth and individual welfare, government and household education finance have gained prominence in developing countries. This study seeks to explain the sensitivity of household education demand based on both school type and level owing to changes in household income and price of education, incorporating selected demographic factors in the analysis. To perform this demand analysis, the author adopted the extended version of the Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System (QUIAIDS) and the 2016/17 Ghana Living Standard Survey 7. The result shows that education at each level is a normal good; the demand of which increases owing to a one percent increase in household education budget (income). Also, households are income elastic to demand general pre-tertiary education but price inelastic at each level of education.  The results further show that public education has higher income elasticities than private education. The author also find that even though both school types are price inelastic, the quantity demanded of private education is more sensitive to change in education cost that public- education at all levels

The manner and ways in which learners perceive and internalize information have been the subject of discussion by many scholars. This paper investigated the effects cognitive styles had on the academic performance of primary school pupils with aphasia in Sokoto State, Nigeria. A correlation research design was used in the conduct of the study. The population used for the study covered all primary school pupils in Sokoto state which numbered 706,064 and the study drew its sample using four stages of sampling. Primary four pupils numbering (9,369) in 63 primary schools that had symptoms of Aphasia were handpicked using a sampling technique called purposive before subjecting them to screening using the Language Screening Test and a total of 69 pupils were screened as aphasic across nine (9) Local Education Authorities from the three (3) educational zones of Sokoto State. The adapted version of the Language Screening Test, Group Embedded Figure Test, and Academic Performance Test designed by the researchers were the instruments used for data collection. The data collected was analyzed using PPMC. Instruments used for the study were validated by the developers and designers of the standardized instruments while academic performance test was validated using assessment and corrections by experts and they were found to have a face and content validity. The reliability of the instruments was realized using test-retest techniques, the correlation index found were, (0.71), (0.77), and (0.80).  Findings of the research indicated that; there existed a positive, strong, and significant connection and the relationship between cognitive styles (field dependent) and academic outcomes/performance as well as a negative, weak, and insignificant relationship existed between cognitive styles (field-independent)  and academic performance. It was concluded that children with Aphasia have language and communication disorder that affected their expressive and receptive language abilities, and the repetition of phrases and words. The researchers recommended that effort should always be made by teachers to identify pupils with aphasia in their classes whose mode of perceiving and processing information is holistic and global toward problems and match it with an individualistic and self-directed teaching approach in a well-structured learning environment

The beauty of Tiv language and literature is achieved when communication or discourse is laced with euphemistic expressions. Euphemisms aid in turning impolite utterances into polite ones. This study, therefore, investigates the communicative potentials of euphemisms in the Tiv language and literature. The study discusses formations of euphemisms, classifies euphemisms and explores the effects of euphemisms. Connotative theory of meaning has been deployed in this study because the interpretation of euphemisms is contextually and connotatively loaded. Methodologically, the author used primary and secondary materials. The author used a participant-observation tool for data collection. Being a native speaker of the Tiv language, the author collected, translated and classified euphemisms. Secondary materials were sourced from textbooks, journal articles, online sources and dictionaries. The following findings were made: euphemisms constitute phrasal or idiomatic synonyms; they beautify or spice our daily communication; they can becloud meanings. This study will benefit preachers, writers, lecturers/teachers, researchers, semanticists, public speakers, politicians and students
