Power relations in the deployment of linguistic resources by world leaders during the Russian-Ukrainian war
On the 24th of February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a war that has drawn widespread condemnations, criticisms, and reactions from world leaders. While an infinitesimal figure has spoken in support of the invasion, most world leaders have outrightly condemned the action of the Russian government led by Vladimir Putin who in the process of justifying his actions, claims that the reason for the invasion was to “de-nazify” the Ukrainian government policies. Ironically, Putin himself is a product of Nazism, a system of government that he strongly supported in his prime. Moreso, in the days of the USSR, the Russian government had been accused of the same offense the Russian government is accusing Ukraine of. Therefore, this is a clear case of linguistic labeling embellished in the exercise of power as a justification for the activity carried out by a more superior force. The theoretical framework of CDA was adopted in this study because it focuses squarely on the projection of ideology and the intersection of power play in any form of discourse. It also brings out indices of hidden meanings in texts and tries to proffer solutions to societal problems from the perspective of language use. The study reveals cases of polarization, ideological projection, the deployment of linguistic resources in form of labeling to justify the actions of Putin over the Ukrainians. There is also the deliberate attempt to “annex” or “conquer” the less powerful using application of force through the policy of “imposition”
Progressive inflectional patterns in Tiv
The study entitled ‘Progressive inflectional patterns in Tiv’ is relevant because it complements the body of literature on Tiv inflection. Previously published papers on Tiv inflection at the disposal of the researchers do not treat progressive inflectional patterns in the language, let alone anchoring the study of progressive inflection in the Tiv language on Paradigm Function Morphology (PFM). Hence, the present study is designed to examine the progressive inflectional patterns in the Tiv language using the theoretical framework of Paradigm Function Morphology (PFM). The objectives of the study are to examine the progressive inflectional patterns featuring suffixation in the Tiv language and progressive inflectional patterns in the language featuring zero affixation. Since the study is designed to examine the progressive inflection in the Tiv language, the survey design was adopted. Data for the study were collected using semi-structured interviews and the researchers’ introspection. The study discovered that progressive inflectional patterns in the Tiv language are marked using suffixation and zero affixation respectively. The findings also show that progressive inflections are marked in the verbal roots so that such verbs can fit in with the syntactic structures in order to express ongoing activities or actions in the Tiv language
Translation services in Tunde Kelani’s film medium of ‘Thunderbolt-Mágùn’ production as evince of cultural credences
Translation refers to the process of rendering of words or text from one language to another as a means of communication that gives meaning to a linguistics discourse from source to target languages for comprehension. Film as a mode of communication is used by individuals to express their thoughts based on representations by creating the illusions through moving images. Hence, in projecting the culture of the people, translation becomes inevitable channel of communication for comprehension of cultural ideas from source to target languages. The paper aims to examine the culture of translation services in films in consonance with the considerable modes of translations: subtitling, simultaneous, documentary and source to target language translations. The study employed qualitative research that uses content analysis design with the use of textual, verbal content analysis in film. A video-film of Tunde Kelani with Yoruba cultural elements has been purposively selected for translation discourse and meanings: Thunderbolt-Mágùn. The study is hinged on Error Analysis theory as appropriately employed for cultural translation discourses. Findings revealed that wrongly used words in describing situations in the process of translation by subtitling, simultaneous type of translations are crucial aspect of filmic interactions. Also, the Yoruba cultural beliefs and traditions are significantly reflected in songs, and also serve as means of expressing the people’s emotions and opinions. These form important aspects of the filmic interactions through which the audience comprehend the messages
Digital education: The approach of a modern teacher
This study aims to improve teachers\u27 ability to deliver excellent and effective digital education. Education is regarded as the fundamental right that a person should possess. However, teaching is a vocation that is mainly disconnected from digital progress. As a result, when a pandemic strikes the world, Philippine Education is one of the sectors caught off guard regarding Blended Learning. Worse, instructors are being inundated with new things to implement, which has resulted in criticism and discussion about educational aptitude in terms of competency. This is undoubtedly an issue for which we should all seek a solution and act. As a result, this research will provide a comprehensive approach to Digital Education that incorporates the GSF-VLOOKUP formula, Google forms, Google spreadsheets, Chatbot Education, and the i. portal.
Conceptualizing the stylistic body movements in contemporary Ghanaian dances as performance art form
This paper attempts to conceptualize the stylistic body movements in contemporary Ghanaian dances through the aesthetic lenses of performance art. The expressiveness of performance art forms is frequently praised for the emotions we have toward them. These feelings are derived from the symbolic connotations and functionalities of the arts in life. Through an exploratory design of qualitative inquiry, the researchers focus on a contextual dialogue on the aesthetic visual presentations of selected contemporary Ghanaian dances as performance art forms. The critical content analysis of music videos was espoused to examine the stylistic body movements and gestures coded in some contemporary Ghanaian dances such as Azonto, Twerking, Kupe, Pilolo and Shoo as part of an empirical artistic study. Instruments for data collection were observation, document analysis and photography for the contextual visual content analyses grounded in semiotic and aesthetic theoretical discourse. This study again relied heavily on secondary data from recorded communication including music videos, books, transcripts, websites, newspaper articles, journal articles and the like to make objective inferences. The findings indicate that dance is the communication that occurs via the conduit of the dancer\u27s body that ruptures individuals\u27 independent existence and generates a sense of finitude. Whereas some of the dances make aggressively erotic visual statements, others are mere expressive gestural and body movements to simply entertain a targeted audience. The result further shows that, the contemporary Ghanaian dance performances transcend beyond mere entertainment but rather are an embodiment of body language emerging from the indigenous dance symbolisms. Teaching learners to perceive visual aesthetic qualities and symbolic interpretations in dance performances will deepen the appreciation of Ghanaian dance performances not just as entertainment but as another medium for expression to transmit their inherent messages. It is suggested that, these dance forms should be formalized as indigenous knowledge in a quest to blend tradition with modernity in our creative endeavours. This knowledge should be propagated through creative arts education in Ghanaian schools. Other performance art components displayed in contemporary Ghanaian dances including body painting, facial expressions, costumology and fashion accessories present another lacuna for further research by future researchers.

Educational and political leadership challenges: Exploring implications on security in Nigeria
Fraught with insecurity in recent years, lack of political and educational leaders’ adoption of sound approach to governance in the state is revealed. This manifest in serious humanitarian crises: a threat to national security and the corporate existence of the country. It is against this background that the paper within the framework of systems theory examined the relationship between leadership and security challenges in Nigeria and how it has turned Nigeria into a fragile system. The universal content analysis and qualitative research design were adopted for the study, and secondary sources of data explored to collect facts. The study unveils and traces insecurity in Nigeria to bad political and educational leadership. There is no sound execution of mutual roles by the executive, legislative and judicial arms of the government. Checks and balances as well oversight functions, including rule of law are flouted. The universities have not achieved their goal of moral and mental transformation of the graduates to desist from assisting bad political leaders as thugs. Incessant Academic Staff Union of Universities\u27 strike action caused by bad leadership also undermines sound education. The populace and leaders alike lack knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 target 4.7 on promotion of non-violence and peace, world citizenship, and cultural differences acceptance, which explains sound governance approach. Based on this, the study recommended among others, revitalisation of roles of the three arms of government, reformation of educational governance, and reorientation of both leaders and the led on sound governance and SDGs prescriptions
An analysis of stakeholders’ support mechanism for the preservation of weaving in an indigenous community
With the fast influence of modernization, many people have to adapt to meet the demand of the changes in society, including the indigenous communities. Some parts of their culture are being at risk due to the high call of alteration. In these communities, customs and traditions should be protected to preserve their culture, heritage, and their identity as a tribe. Thus, the purpose of the study was to make an analysis of stakeholders’ support mechanism for the preservation of weaving in an indigenous community. The research design of the study followed the quantitative research design complemented with qualitative data to analyze the stakeholders’ support mechanisms. Quantitative data were analyzed with the application of the Prince Chart and Prince Method of Calculation, while qualitative data were perused through content or textual analysis. The research participants of the study were the thirty (30) respondents who answered the survey questionnaire adopted from the UP-NCPAG, and ten (10) informants who went through an in-depth interview (IDI). The results of the quantitative data analysis showed that the issue position elicited affirmative score, while the power and priority scored high. It also showed a 100% probability of support from the stakeholders, which denotes certainty of implementation. On the other hand, the qualitative data and findings reinforced and validated the quantitative data and findings. The study arrived at a conclusion that there is high optimism and likelihood that the proposed development of NC II Weaving in Amgu-o will become a reality which will lead to the preservation of weaving the indigenous community
Women’s contribution in african economies: It is time for a rethink
Explicitly defining orthodoxies about women empowerment in Africa reveal that, unlike men, women lack more economic opportunities, which contributes to their declining local economy and that of their respective nations. Although several studies have explored this claim further, most of their analytic portions have substantially surfaced the plausible causal link between other indicators and these nations\u27 economic decline. This emphasis gives impetus to claims of a deliberate attempt by researchers not to posit causal relationships between women\u27s inadequate economic opportunities and their respective nations\u27 dwindling economies. In this regard, there are sketch speculations that any debate about women\u27s role in a given African nation\u27s economic growth is likely to be divided into arguments around their work efficiency. Within such debates, narratives around the responsiveness of such nations’ governance systems to women, and their inherent societal norms, can be chiefly dialectical. By calling attention to issues limiting women’s contributions to economies, this article demonstrates how increased investment in women’s economic empowerment brings forth a positive impact on the economy. It borrows from Galtung’s structural form of violence and Barnett and Hyde’s expansionist theory in deriving an eclectic mix of expositions to support this position. . Based on these expositions, it concludes that discriminatory social norms and practices, and inadequate legislation, are the main impediments to women’s economic empowerment. It proposes, in light of this conclusion, the need to delegitimize norms and ideas that perpetuate women\u27s disempowerment and suggests that it can be achieved, through advocacy and policy interventions, which are context-specific
Loan performance and lending rate: Testing the existence of adverse selection in the Nigerian credit market
Leaning on the loan pricing theory, this study provided empirical proof of the existence of adverse selection in the Nigerian credit market using the interrelation between the lending rate and non-performing loans as a decision factor. The paper employed Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF), Phillips Perron (PP), and Kwiatkowski–Phillips–Schmidt–Shin (KPSS) for stationarity tests, Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Bound Test for cointegration and an ARDL model for the regression analyses using quarterly data. The results of the analyses showed a positive and consequential link connecting non-performing loans and lending rates, proving the existence of adverse selection in the Nigerian credit market in the short-run and long-run. Based on the results, the study recommends that the apex bank implement a price ceiling in the credit market. Banks and other financial institutions should properly define their lending rates given their cost of funds and other operational expenses. And hence, carefully select viable borrowers from the credit market that suit the bank’s credit policy rather than adjust the lending rate up to compensate for higher risk
