    Get PDF
This paper exposes, through qualitative inquiry, the effects of blended learning on training and acquisition of hard and soft skills among Visual Arts students at Mampong Technical College of Education. Two weeks of unobtrusive observation of blended learning lessons were done. Three focus group interviews involving 15 level 300 Visual Arts students to assess the level of impact blended learning exerts on their training and skill acquisition. Findings reveal that the WhatsApp platform was the most used for the online component of the blended learning whereas traditional face-to-to lessons were coupled with OERs and YouTube videos. Students’ enthusiasm for personal learning through exploration using OERs has increased and able to produce end of semester group Visual Art project works despite the challenges due to the blended and learner-centred pedagogies implemented deployed by their tutors.  There is a need for further studies to investigate the pedagogic competencies of the MTCE student-teachers in their teaching practices to ascertain their level of skills acquired through the blended learning since their success would impact the national agenda of raising critical and creative thinkers through the standard-based curriculum

Reinforcing relief sculpture work: A key to proper adhesion

    Get PDF
The recent relief sculpture works showed lack of bonding properties for the work to last long. Therefore, this study sought to reinforce relief sculpture letters for better adhesion. A practice-based method was used, consisting of the following steps. The wall nailling, binding, and cement grouting were used in constructing relief sculpture letters. This was done to reinforce the work. First, the template (mould) was made from plywood, traced onto the cement rendering, and hacked the layout of the letters to give the key. In the second step, the mould was mounted or fixed onto the cement rendering for hacked areas to show through the template. This was followed by fixing the wall nails and binding wire in the mould and applying the cement grout onto them. Finally, cement mortar was filled into the mould. It was found that the wall nails and the binding wire had reinforced the relief sculpture letters, while the cement grout also exhibited a good bonding. As a result of this, the relief sculpture lettering did not crack or peel-off from the cement surface. By using wall nails, binding wire, and cement grout as reinforcing agents, it can be concluded that relief sculpture works can withstand tensile or shear stresses caused by forces

Textile design and traditional cultural properties in Nigeria: A batik textile exploration

    Get PDF
The rapidity of moral degeneracy and bankruptcy in Nigeria and elsewhere is only symptomatic of the apparent fact that African cultures have been under serious threat, through the invectives of alien cultures through globalization. Efforts must therefore be made at arresting the drifting cultural values through the conservation and preservation of traditional cultural properties, such as traditional motifs and their cultural meanings. However, there have been scanty in-depth research to establish a possible nexus between textile design and preservation of motifs of cultural artefacts. This study examined the exploration of the utility of textile design as a veritable instrument in achieving the clarion call by Traditional Cultural Properties (TCP). In this study the Igbo oji isi ato and ududo motifs and their cultural significance were highlighted. The practice led research approach was adopted. The results showed that the batik textile design could be adopted in the preservation of traditional cultural properties in Nigeria. The oji isi ato and ududo batiks were specifically explored and found to be a veritable mechanism that could be leveraged upon in the preservation of symbols and motifs of traditional cultural properties. It is therefore recommended that scholars should explore more areas to achieve the conservation and preservation of motifs of cultural artefacts and traditional cultural properties to arrest the drift in moral values among the youth

Infectious Bursal disease or IBD is a common disease in poultry which is effecting birds specially hen, turkey and other species of poultry birds. It is caused by a virus called Birna Virus as virus belongs to family of Birna viridae. This virus effecting many birds in a year and becoming the cause of high mortality of birds if we don’t follow the precautionary measure it will cause 40-50% mortality. This study will give a policy which should be adopt in order to minimize the risk of IBD. By following the policies which are mentioned in this study you can manage the flock which is infected by IBD. We also tried that policy on infected birds and we got remarkable results we saw that these policies save birds from IBD and also help to recover sick birds. So our that study is for our farmers and poultry industrialist who get knowledge by reading this. We this study bring revolution to fight against IBD. This study is research based and completely original so it will help to reduce the risk of viral infection

Fabric symbology: Correlation between President Akufo-Addo’s fabric choice and his COVID-19 addresses to Ghanaians

    Get PDF
Although there is no mandatory (legal) dress code for the President of Ghana, it is noteworthy that the President’s choice of garment for public engagements, as the first Iconic Figure of the land, is a critical identity construction issue with an additional possibility of promoting the indigenous Ghanaian textile products for massive (inter)national patronage. This remains a pertinent concern to Ghanaian fashion devotees and scholars. This qualitative descriptive study, therefore, examines eight (8) random-purposively sampled authentic Ghanaian print fabrics (garments) adorned by President Akufo-Addo for his COVID-19 addresses to establish their nonverbal correlative communication repositories with the contents of the messages delivered to Ghanaians. The study elicited views through interviews from seasoned Ghanaian fabric manufacturing experts and fabric retailers regarding the symbology of the sampled fabrics. It was found that the Ghanaian authentic print fabrics (garments) adorned by President Akufo-Addo for his COVID-19 updates symbolically correlated with the contents of the addresses delivered to Ghanaians. Therefore, the President’s continuous use of Ghanaian authentic print fabrics for his COVID-19 addresses communicates his Ghanaian nationalistic identity; promotes the beautiful and symbolically rich Ghanaian fabrics for the patronage of a larger (inter)national market. This stands to attract massive market for Ghanaian print fabrics thereby positively impacting the economic gains of the ailing Ghanaian textile industry. It would therefore be novel if further investigation is conducted on the possible economic impact of the President’s adornment of authentic Ghanaian print fabrics (garments) for public occasions on the Ghanaian textile industry

Agricultural activities around river bank are popular practice in most riverine areas in Nigeria. Vegetables are the commonest agricultural commodity that are grown around the river bank and are averagely the most consumed food product in Nigeria. An investigative screening of metallic contamination of Amaranthus spp grown in three farms around river Ibi bank showed a level of metallic deposition: Cadmium (Cd), (2.25±0.63, 3.28±0.55, 2.51±0.03) ppm; Lead (Pb), (1.83±0.51, 0.54±0.03, 1.06±0.13) ppm; Mercury (Hg), (0.53±0.01, 1.03±0.01, 0.66±0.01) ppm; Arsenic (As), (0.50±0.72, 0.51±0.06, 0.62±0.15) ppm and Chromium (Cr), (4.26±0.51, 2.66±0.22, 1.75±0.38) ppm. Descending order of the mean concentrations of the trace metals detected from analyzed sample of Amaranthus spp from the three locations are as follows; Farm A: Cr>Cd>As>Pb>Hg, Farm B: Cd>Cr>Hg>Pb>As, Farm C: Cd>Cr>Pb>Hg>As. Amaranthus spp cultivated along Ibi river bank has shown a reasonable amount of deposition of heavy metals, therefore, are not totally safe. The metallic content in Amaranthus spp sample collected in farms along Ibi river bank ranges; 0.50±0.72 to 4.26±0.51 in sample A, 0.51±0.06 to 3.28±0.55 in sample B and 0.62±0.15 to 2.51±0.03 in sample C. The metallic deposition detected from analyzed Amaranthus spp showed values that are above the World Health Organization set permissible limit (Pb-0.3ppm; Cd-0.2 ppm; As-0.5ppm; Hg-0.5ppm; Cr-0.5ppm). Bioaccumulation of these metallic substances in the human system as a result of long-term consumption of the vegetables poses a deleterious health effect. This study aimed at ascertaining the food safety of agricultural products cultivated around Ibi river bank

Religio-cultural perspectives and their contributions to the historical development of education and the civilization of nations

    Get PDF
This treatise ruminates on the religio-cultural perspectives of education which undoubtedly consist the summit and fulcrum of education. This perspective of education, which is usually neglected and denigrated by some educationists, occupies a central place in the life and being of humanity because culture and religion are of the essence of man. These two all-essential elements of man’s social environment are definitive of the personality and identity of man as a member of a given human society. Hence, they constitute the foundations of formal, semi-formal and informal education. The main objective of this treatise is to deductively demonstrate that culture has been crucial to the historical development of education globally. The methods adopted in this study is the expository analytic and the hermeneutical methods. With the aid of the expository method, this study reveals that education, culture and religion are intrinsically related and they essentially impact the social life of man. The research demonstrates that cultural and religious beliefs of peoples or nations have inexorably shaped their philosophies and conceptualization of education. Based on the findings of this critical analysis, the study concludes that the history and development of education cannot be plausibly recounted and substantiated if the contributions of major world cultures and mainstream religions are not considered. Therefore, the researcher recommends that curriculum studies and planning must necessarily integrate cultural and religious factors in order to make such studies existentially and pragmatically relevant to the social ethos, needs and historical challenges of the society
