A morphosyntactic and semantic analysis of toponyms among the Luhya: A case of Bungoma County
Onomastics, the study of names has remained an area of marginal significance in research despite its importance in language studies. This paper conducts a morphosyntactic and semantic analysis of toponymns (place names) among the Luhya group of speakers in Western Kenya, Bungoma County. A structural and functional approach is used to analyse the naming patterns with the idea that African names, as signs of language, can be divided into two morpho-syntactic categories:nominal that is, they constitute single words, or syntagmatic, meaning they are made up of sentences or phrases. Purposively sampled thirty place names are selected from the IEBC inventory and nine key respondents from the nine sub counties. The 30 names are subjected to morpho-syntactic analysis whereas the semi-structured interviews are used to elicit data on etimology and meaning of names from the nine respondents within the framework of the Frame Semantic theory by Fillmore, (Fillmore, 1982). The theory is used to ascertain whether the meaning-making elements in the respective toponymns reflect the historical functions and meanings embedded within the names. The findings reveal that Luhya place names are generated through grammatical rules as a result of word transformations. Such names are generated from nominals and their resulting phrases through derivational morphology.Three word formation processes namely, pre-fixation, compounding and borrowing are exhibited in the naming process. Semantically, the study reveals that Luhya place names are transparent and descriptive in terms of their function. Places are named after topographical features, historical events, climatic conditions and prominent people
A systemic functional analysis of mood system in Olu Obafemi’s “Dark Times Are Over?”
Systemic theory was chiefly put forward by the British scholar M.A.K. Halliday in the 20th century. The theory looks at language as property owned by the society to serve some functions identified by the proponents of the construct. Precisely, Halliday holds that language performs three functions, namely, ‘the representational function’, ‘the interactional function’ and the ‘textual function.’ Analogous to these metafunctions, as he calls them, are three network systems: transitivity, mood and theme. The aim of this paper is to examine the mood network system in Obafemi’s Dark Times Are Over? To achieve this objective, 40 clauses were randomly selected from the play. The study employed systemic theory that largely comes from Michael Halliday and espoused by Eggins for data analysis. The study finds out that declarative moods are more present in the text
Issues of ideal national identities in Tanure Ojaide’s The Questioner: A psychoanalytic approach
Environmental degradation has been a major topic of concern all over the world, especially because lands exploited for mining mineral resources such as crude oil become contaminated to such an extent that the natural ecosystems of many communities in the world are destroyed. Nigeria is not exempted from this problem and in particular, the Niger-Delta area has for decades suffered great deterioration due to the exploration and exploitation of oil. This situation may have instigated Tanure Ojaide to write poems that bring to the fore the psychological disposition of a people plagued with environmental degradation in the Niger-Delta area of Nigeria to call the world’s attention to the deterioration of life in the Niger-Delta. It is against this backdrop that this study understudies The Questioner, a collection of poems in order to further encapsulate the gory picture of environmental depreciation, neglect, corruption and unconcern for the people of the Niger-Delta. With the application of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytical discourse, this study identifies the formation or adoption of questionable identities by individuals who are bedeviled with problems associated with environmental degradation. Hence, by the end of this research, it is observed that the personae in the poems studied, were embroiled in psychological conflicts that caused the fragmentation of their identities as a result of the devastating effects of environmental degradation
Anaphors in Ikwuano Igbo: Binding Theory Approach
This work investigates Anaphors in Ikwuano Igbo. Anaphoric expressions are useful in the meaningful interpretations of NPs in a discourse. This study adopts the Binding Theory (BT) approach of GB syntax in examining anaphoric expressions in Igbo. Data for this work were elicited from native speakers of Ikwuano in Ikwuano area of Abia State, Nigeria. This paper was verified for cross-referencing purposes given the researcher’s native speaking intuition and introspection. This study investigates anaphors and antecedents and also demonstrates the concepts of C-command and binding, among others in Ikwuano Igbo. The work reveals that Ikwuano Igbo has two types of anaphors- the reflexive and the reciprocal anaphors. The study demonstrates that the binding theory investigates the syntactic relationship that can or must hold between a given proform and its antecedent. In this respect, anaphors (reflexive and reciprocal pronouns) behave very differently from personal pronouns. The work demonstrates the concepts of binding, Co-indexation, Co-referentiality, locality constraint and C-constituent command to show dependency between the antecedents and the anaphors in Ikwuano Igbo. This paper also reveals that Ikwuano Igbo has anaphoric expressions that do not mark gender. The Binding Theory shows that the antecedent and the anaphor occur in the same governing category. Also it shows that a pronominal must be free in its governing category and an R-expression must be free everywhere in a sentence according to the regulating principles of the Theory. This paper reveals the descriptive nature of antecedent- anaphor relationship in the study of syntactic structures for grammaticality

The greatest fighters in the new normal: How do students survive in learning during this time of pandemic?
The year 2020 began with devastating happenings which appalled us that we could not keep up. Wearing face masks, taking up vitamins to nurture our health, washing and disinfecting hands, the social distancing, the lockdowns, the never-ending home quarantine, working from home, and even studying/learning at home are some of the consequences of the global health crisis. Moreover, COVID-19 has a massive impact on our education. The majority of the population considers it a big problem in acquiring learning. However, there are various ways to solve such problems in the midst of this crisis. This paper significantly gives ideas on how educators adjust through implications and responses to some questions, offers suggestions on how people can cope and adapt to this new normal education setting, and ways on how they deal with their physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects enable them to overcome difficulties in this time of the pandemic. Thus, students, teachers, and parents will adapt to this new normal process of acquiring learning, so all should succeed

The disruption of this pandemic was felt and experienced by many countries, by many families, many individuals, even at work and in school. This article aims to show how dedicated and passionate teachers are in their profession, particularly today. As you progress, you will learn about the experiences, suffering, and hardships that we go through, which will be an unforgettable experience for the future educator. This pandemic created new challenges as well as solutions. This crisis brings us another opportunity to develop our skills, explore new learning styles, and enhance our behavior by being resilient, cooperative, and helpful towards other people. This will convey the path we go through to finish this school year and at the same time show how teachers manage students to stay motivated and continue to learn
Public administration and public safety in Anambra State of Nigeria
The study is on public administration and public safety in Anambra State. The essence is to examine how public safety is influenced by public administration. The study was necessitated by the poor nature of public safety in the study area. A quantitative research design was used for the study. Three basic objectives guided the study and accordingly three research questions were raised. The population consised of citizens residing in Awka town the capital of Anambra state. A sample of 150 respondents was drawn using a print questionnaire titled Public Administration and Public Safety Questionnaire (PAPUSQ). The questionnaire Cronbach-Alpha reliability index was 0.82 which is indicative of high reliability and simple percentage was used to analyse the three research questions that guide the study with 50% as bench mark. Results indicated that nature of public safety in the state is rather poor. Many citizens do not enjoy the dividends of good governance. In the same manner, the study discovered that one of ways to improve public administration in order to forestall public safety is by eradication of corruption, prosecution of corrupt public administrators among others. It was suggested that the masses should elect only credible persons to hold public offices. Also, there is need to put systems and structures in place to checkmate the excesses of public administrators. The study therefore concluded that public administration has a critical role to play in ensuring public safety
Post-election litigations outcome and the credibility of the election management institution in Nigeria, 1999-2019
Over the years, Nigeria has continued to search for better ways of consolidating her fragile democracy. This study therefore, seeks to examine how the electoral process, particularly post-election litigations have contributed to strengthening democratic governance in Nigeria within the period under study. To achieve this, the study adopted the Liberal Democratic Theory as a theoretical guide and ex-post-facto research design. The Documentary Method of data collection was employed for collecting data while the Qualitative Descriptive Method was used for analyzing the data. The study found that the credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been truncated at different periods. Again, both the post-election litigations outcome and the credibility of the election management body (INEC) were dependent on the credibility of the leadership of INEC at different periods. In order words, if the leadership of INEC lacks credibility, it will definitely impact on the credibility of the elections, the post-election litigation outcomes and the overall credibility of INEC as an institution. The study therefore recommends that proper scrutinizing of the leadership of INEC be always done before appointment, to ensure that people of integrity are appointed into such office since their actions immensely shape the electoral process
