Looking at the travails and triumphs of foreign language acquisition in non-English speaking countries among the multilingual OFWs
The Philippines is home to more than 120 vernacular languages and two official languages, Filipino and English. In line with this, Filipinos are seen and assumed as fast learners of other languages, especially those Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) living and working abroad in non-speaking English countries. Despite exposure to bilingual or multilingual settings in the Philippines, it does not guarantee an easy grasp of learning a new language, for challenges and struggles inevitably affect many aspects of life. Thus, this essay will help OFWs and language learners to prepare to acquire and learn the language of the host countries whose English is a foreign language, the government agencies responsible for the language training for the workers abroad, and to significantly contribute to the existing language acquisition corpora among adult learners.
Women and the maintenance of peace in Nigeria\u27s rural communities: A study of Oshi Ekwa Leka of the Eziobodo people
Women all over the world and in Nigeria play vital role in the maintenance and nurturing of peace in homes and in the society. Despite this, in times of conflict, women are not represented in peace negotiations and in planning and execution of post- conflict reconstruction efforts and strategies. Women\u27s participation and strong influence in peace building and maintenance bring about an immediate agreement. The influence of their intervention processes positively correlates with a great likelihood of the agreements implemented. Peace agreement, including women in reconstruction, rehabilitation, and negotiations for peace improves the quality of agreements made and increases the likelihood that they will be carried through. This paper examines the role and place of women in the maintenance of peace in rural communities in Nigeria. The paper adopts womanism as its theoretical framework as it looks into the activities of the Oshi ekwa leka, a women\u27s group of the Eziobodo Alachara Mgbowo of Awgu Local government Area of Enugu state, Nigeria. The study employed the survey method, where key informant interviews or in-depth interview (IDI) was used to collect qualitative data from the women leader and chairman of the community. The paper identifies the activities of the women in the maintenance of peace in their community and advocates women\u27s inclusion in peace negotiations at round tables
Colorism in advertisements in Kenyan print newspapers: A study of the nation newspaper
Colorism is discriminatory, as it excludes dark skin tones and elevates light skin tones. Studies have established the negative effects of colorism on different groups of people. Owing to the power of advertisements to influence and shape opinions, beliefs and perceptions, this study’s purpose was to determine colorism in advertisements in Kenyan print newspapers. The research methodology encompassed the use of a case study design. The Nation print newspaper was studied because it is the most widely read newspaper in Kenya. Data was collected through the content analysis of all advertisements from January to April 2023. The study found out that light skin was the most preferred skin tone for males and females in the advertisements. However, more females than males in the advertisements were light-skinned, whereas more males than females were dark-skinned. This study concludes that colorism exists in advertisements in Kenyan print newspapers. The study recommends equal representations of color tones to mirror the composition of the Kenyan population
The current clinical diagnosis and management of small bowel bleeding caused by a primary aortic fistula: A literature review
Background: Primary aortic intestinal fistula is caused by erosion, rupture, and perforation of the adjacent digestive tract of the arterial wall, and the mortality rate is extremely high, the preoperative diagnosis rate is only 0%~36%, and the autopsy detection rate is only 0.04%~0.007%. Because there are no typical clinical symptoms that have not been detected, it is necessary to expand the sample size and further explore its etiology, pathophysiology, and pathogenesis to improve the diagnosis rate and the relevant diagnosis and treatment techniques. Methods: This study focuses on understanding primary aortic fistula-induced small bowel hemorrhage. We gathered electronic search data from Scopus, Medline, Google Scholar, PubMed, Springer, and CNKI. Recommendations were extracted from the identified articles. Conclusion: To identify small intestinal hemorrhages as quickly as feasible and provide prompt and effective care, professionals should devote more attention to diagnosing and treating small intestinal bleeding and increase public awareness of the condition
Evaluation of antioxidant activity, phytochemical screening, FTIR characterisation and nutritional values of Passiflora Foetida methanol extract
Hysteria, asthma, and skin illnesses with inflammation are all treated by Passiflora foetida, a wild species of the Passifloraceae family. The purpose of this work is to determine the phytochemical contents, antioxidant capabilities, and FTIR analysis of Passiflora foetida crude methanol extract. Standard laboratory methods were used to conduct the phytochemical analysis. The antioxidant activity of the methanol extract was measured using an UltraViolet-Visible Spectrophotometer at 517nm against 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryhydroxyl (DPPH). In addition, an FTIR characterization study was performed. The sample, according to the phytochemical screening analysis, contains tannin, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, and phenols. At 300µg/mL concentration, the highest antioxidant activity was recorded (73.36 percent), whereas, at 1000µg/mL concentration, the lowest activity (60.31 percent) was obtained. FTIR spectrum bands of 2852–2922 cm-1 -CH- group, 1507 – 1715 cm-1 band of C-C aromatic group, 1173 – 1362cm-1 band of C-O aromatic and ester groups are notable in the spectrum. The results of this study revealed that Passiflora foetida may be a promising plant to be exploited in drug discovery

In-school factors constraining Bauchi state government and UNICEF girls’ education programme strategies
Girls’ education is critical to the development of Nigeria; as such, this comparative study is an attempt to investigate the extent to which in-school related factors constrained the girls’ education programme strategies of the Bauchi State Government, Nigeria and UNICEF from improving girl-child education in the state. A mixed method research design comprising both qualitative and quantitative approach to data gathering was developed and utilized to obtain a sample size of 180 respondents out of a total population of 283 using Qualtrics quantitative sample size calculator based on purposive sampling technique. Data obtained were analysed thematically and hypothesis tested using multiple regression with the aid of the SPSS statistical software (version 20) at 0.05 level of significance. The null hypothesis was rejected and the alternate upheld because it was found that school related factors, such as furniture, toilet and water facilities, availability of classrooms, teachers and school fence significantly constrained the girls’ education programme strategies of the Bauchi State Government from improving girl-child education compared to that of UNICEF. In conclusion it was recommended that, the state government should utilize traditional and religious institutions to enlighten and create awareness about the benefits of the girls’ education programme been implemented
Socio-economic determinants of demand for healthcare utilization in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State Nigeria
Quality health is socially and economically beneficial as a healthy population is more productive at work. Also, healthy infants develop and perform better in learning and cognitive ability, thus, becoming productive adults in the future. A healthy population contributes to a great extent to the development and growth of the economy. However, the costs of demand for healthcare and the socio-economic conditions of the masses may constitute major impediments to the healthcare demand of the populace. In the light of this, the paper investigates the perceived socioeconomic push factors that determine healthcare demand in Nsukka local government metropolises. Specifically, the paper interrogates the differences in the healthcare demand by people of different age groups, educational attainment, and income levels in Nsukka Metropolis. Descriptive statistics and ANOVA were used in data analyses. The variables of interest included visits to the hospital for regular medical checkups, completion of medication, choice of hospital, use of treated insecticidal nets, response when sick, and nature of treatment sought when sick. Findings show that income and age significantly influence healthcare demand in the Nsukka metropolis. Elderly people were found to be more conscious of their health, and as a result, have the highest percentage of healthcare demand. The paper finds that people of higher income levels demand more healthcare than those in lower-income groups. There is a slight difference in the healthcare demand by people of different educational backgrounds since the majority of them misuse drugs, practice self-medication, and neglect regular medical checkups
The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and its implications on academic excellence in Federal University Wukari, Taraba State
The use of ICT in undertaking major operations at Federal University Wukari is expected to change the ways public officials carry out their duties. Before the introduction of ICT, each departmental exam officer was expected to manually prepare and collate their students\u27 results for adoption at the various levels of approval. The adoption of ICT in preparing students\u27 results seems not to have gone down well with the exam officers. The study examines the perceptions of the exam officers towards the adoption of ICT in collating students’ results at the University. It also examines its implications on academic excellence in the university. The study is survey research, as such, primary and secondary data were collated. The data collected via the questionnaires were analysed quantitatively, while the other qualitative data were analysed using content analysis. Findings revealed that the exam officers are not adequately informed and prepared for the change as it was forced on them suddenly by the school management. However, they all agreed that ICT has positively affected the preparation and collation of student results as it has greatly reduced errors and inconsistency, inaccuracy and stress associated with the former system. Although the use of ICT came with its problems, it has positively affected students’ academic accomplishments at the University. ICT was found more reliable and efficient in accomplishing an effective evaluation of students in the University. The study, therefore, suggests more training for exam officers on the use of ICT, and the provision of the necessary equipment required for the use of ICT, among others
Languaging ethnicity and decolonising language ideologies in Cameroon contemporary urban music
This paper examines the relationship between standard language ideologies and ethnicity as performed in music. This is premised against the assumption that research on language and race/ethnicity has tended to focus more on institutional settings and how ideologies about race or ethnicity are (re) produced and sustained through language policies and practices in these settings while little is done to account for how these tendencies are performed out of institutional settings. It is against this backdrop that this paper examines two Cameroonian songs as sites wherein ideologies about standard language are sustained and challenged. The ethnicisation of linguistic sounds in one True Feelings permeates a colonial tendency establishing the standard norm versus the non-standard variety between British English and Cameroon English or New Englishes in general. The purported Standard English is depicted as the norm against which deviant forms are judged. This tendency is decolonised Be Proud wherein plea is made to diversity and linguistic plurality as the alternation between different sound forms and structures is associated to the creative potential of the language. The analysis therefore demonstrates that there is need to consider and amplify the enormous research in the emerging field of Raciolinguistics by extending the debate into informal settings where such ideological work is either sustained or challenged
