How has Nigerian English affected English language teaching and learning in Cameroon?

    Get PDF
Whether English has become an international lingua franca or not is no longer a conjecture. Evidence in science and technology as well as international business and communication can buttress this point. The bond (both geographical and intercultural) between Nigeria and Cameroon dates as far as the precolonial periods to the present date with consequent influences. The most recent influence is reminiscent of popular arts with the artistic hegemony exerted by the Nigerian movie industry and popular art forms in West and Central Africa. This has resulted in an unnoticeable invasion and spread of Nigerian English in this context. Using the accommodation theory by Howard Giles as a theoretical premise, this paper investigates the linguistic influence of Nigerian popular arts on English language learning and teaching in Cameroon. Qualitative data collection processes such as observation and interviews were adopted while content analysis frameworks were used for analysis. Findings reveal that learners have acquired new lexical items and expressions from Nigerian popular art forms and use them in their conversations; both within and without the classroom. An inventory of these words and expressions was made with a further lexico-semantic appraisal and pedagogic relevance drawn from the data. The study recommends the need for linguists to pay attention to outer cycle varieties and inherent influences rather than the dominant native and non-native dichotomy. From a pedagogic perspective, the study reiterates the need to use popular art forms in the teaching/learning process of English but this time around with context-specific forms and local coloration. or copy and paste your abstract of no more than 250 words. Get PDF
This study examines tone in Wapan. Wapan is a dialect of the Jukun language spoken in Wukari local government area of Taraba State. The study is aim at providing linguistic information that could be used in avoiding misrepresentation of ideas in communication. The objective of this research is to study tonality in relation to semantic variation of lexical items in Wapan. The methodology adopted for this study is the descriptive method and the data for the study were gathered from some selected Wapan native speakers in Avyi, Assa, Chonku, and Wukari II districts who are well-informed and conversant with the fundamentals of the dialect. Secondary data were elicited from the already existing literature related to the study. The research used the leipzing glossing rules for the organization and coding of data for easy understanding of the meaning of individual words used. The study adopts Chomsky’s Classical phonology theory for its analysis. The investigation reveals that change in utterance can be initiated by a change in tone. The study concludes that the features of words and their analysis in the dialect are very essential in identifying the changes in the pitch level of a speaker’s voice that result to change in the meaning of an utterance. The work has contributed to knowledge by giving insight on how a single word can represent different thoughts. More so, the study will serve as a reference material; give awareness to identical features in other languages. Recommendations were made for further research, campaigns and funding

    Monetisation of poetry through music

    Get PDF
This paper demonstrates how poetry can be monetised through music. The purpose is to address the unfortunate dichotomy between poetry and music by recommending that poets can make money through writing music. To achieve this objective, a comprehensive review of related literature was done. It was found that though music has the semblance of poetry, majority were not written by trained or experienced poets. This is because poets have failed to see the correlation between poetry and music. On that basis, the paper substantiates a comparative analysis of the relationship of poetry to music to birth skills for money. The research methodology is a qualitative analysis of randomly selected poems and music. It also recommends that the art of poetry needs to go beyond mere analysis and classification of poems as mostly taught in citadels of learning. It is pivotal that the entrepreneurial angle of poetry be emphasised too. The research finds that poets fail as a result of their education, to write poems into songs so as to make money through it/them. They also fail to explore Artificial Intelligence (AI) which can mitigate cost and access to studio in making beats and melody. In conclusion the paper advocates harmonisation of the craft of poetry and music for mutual survival of both

    Get PDF
"Deepfake" refers to the complex processing of audiovisual content using generative adversarial networks (GANs) and other deep learning methods. It enables the smooth superimposition of one person\u27s face or voice over another, producing remarkably lifelike fake films or images. However, the online distribution of the modified images could result in major moral, ethical, and legal issues if misused. This rapid literature review aimed to establish a clear perspective regarding deepfake digital face manipulation. The paper emphasized the potential risks of this technology while also discussing the benefits of looking into deepfakes. The study contributes to the field\u27s understanding. It addresses the abuse of deepfake technology by offering insights into the most current advancements in identifying and creating manipulated facial images. Strict ethical standards and rules regulating its application must be developed to maximize its potential. To maximize the benefits and minimize the risks of this technology, a multifaceted strategy that considers ethical concerns, legal frameworks, technological innovation, and public awareness is necessary. With the development of AI-driven detection systems, the adverse effects of modified content on both people and society can be addressed

Towards an ideal abstract in academic writing: Some crucial components

    Get PDF
It is required for every research, journal paper, and academic thesis or dissertation to have a scientific summary of the whole work. This paper aims to present some components of writing an ideal abstract in academic writing. A systematic literature review and personal observation were done to achieve this aim. It was found that an ideal abstract should have a title, author’s name and other details, an introduction, the aim of the study, methodology, findings, conclusion, and some recommendations based on the study’s findings. It was also noted that around five keywords must be included at the end of the abstract. Conclusively, if the highlighted components are written methodically, they will collectively provide a clear and organized overview of the research thereby helping readers and assessors to easily grasp the purpose, methodology, findings, and implications of the study. It was also recommended that scholars should always meticulously write abstracts for their scholarly works to enable readers and assessors to quickly decide on the work

Exploring territory and co-presence in contemporary choreography in the works of some Cameroonian dance artists

    Get PDF
The relationship between territory and dance has recently emerged as a topic of interest, driven by the advent of novel possibilities and challenges associated with territorial habitation. This has prompted choreographers to address the issue of co-presence in their work. While some choreographers continue to create works for the theatre, it is now common practice for others to work outside the traditional theatre. In their creative works, whether on a theatre stage or in other settings, Bouba Landrille Tchouda, André Takou Saa and Merlin Nyakam employ a range of gestural and movement techniques to explore the concept of territory. The purpose of this study is to examine the ways in which these artists inhabit a territory and the relationships they establish between dancers and the territory(ies). This qualitative interpretive investigation is informed by a narrative and scoping review of dance and spatial/territorial theories, as well as the perspectives of choreographers on their engagement with dance and territory. The findings demonstrate how choreographers portray the embodiment of dancers and territories through physical, sensory, and historical memories, thereby creating spaces for aesthetic, and political discussions, from the realm of life to imagined and administered territories. The choreographers utilise the dancers to create deformations in the choreographic form and to take up the territories, whether in public spaces or in theatres, with a view to sharing their physical memories and experiences. This work presents a novel configuration of bodies, places, and crises, while simultaneously advancing both aesthetic and political considerations. It provides a new perspective on dance studies in Cameroon and has the potential to inspire innovative practices and experiences, challenging established values and perceptions of dance as an art form

“Ideas are Immortal, Suppress them and they will Ultimately Fester with even more Macabre Consequences”: Analyzing the Ambazonian Revolt in Cameroon Since 2016

    Get PDF
The Ambazonian revolt in Cameroon which began in 2016 is a case study in understanding the relationship between ideologies and social revolts. Ideologies such as nationalism, identity politics, and historical grievances drive the revolt, with nationalism fostering a collective identity among the Anglophone population who feel marginalized by the Francophone government. Identity politics exacerbates these sentiments by highlighting cultural differences and perceived injustices. Historical grievances rooted in colonial legacies also contribute to the ideological landscape. The revolt itself, characterized by protests, armed conflicts and calls for secession, is the dependent variable. This study therefore focuses on the relationship between ideological persistence and its effect on revolts with Ambazonia as a case study. The monograph  analyses the Cameroon Anglophone problem and its resulting conflicts over the past eight years using authoritative secondary data. It examines historical documents, academic articles and institutional reports to highlight the persistence of the Ambazonian ideologies. The study emphasizes the influence of enduring ideologies on socio-political dynamics and the resilience of these ideas. Findings from the analysis reveal that the Ambazonian revolt in Cameroon is a result of a complex interplay between ideologies and social revolts. It is driven by nationalism, identity politics and historical grievances leading to protests, armed conflicts and calls for secession. The revolt is not a spontaneous reaction but a culmination of longstanding issues. Policymakers must recognize these factors and address them constructively to prevent further escalation and effectively analyse and contain these stubborn ideas for lasting solutions

Innovation in the delivery of education through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), like ChatGPT, is creating a formidable educational paradigm in higher education. This study aimed to assess the perceptions of all 141 third-year pre-service teachers about prompting ChatGPT to support their academic journey. The findings revealed that ChatGPT is helpful in educational tasks, and some pre-service teachers occasionally struggle to comprehend its tone and style. There is a slight inclination towards neutrality regarding the performance, and it is undecided whether the pre-service teachers are satisfied since some aspects need to be improved or if the pre-service teachers have limited exposure to AI. Lastly, the pre-service teachers generally agree with recommending ChatGPT to peers and mentors. ChatGPT has benefits for pre-service teachers in different educational settings; however, they should also maintain a balance and employ the smart and honest application of this educational tool to uphold academic integrity

    Get PDF
Banking industry has played an integral role in mobilizing funds from areas of surpluses to places of deficits so as to bolster growth in the economy. However, banks collapse in Nigeria has become a worrisome phenomena because of the significant roles of banks in financial intermediation. These collapses are a result of ineffective credit management system that has led to the inability of banks to retrieve loan funds as at when due, thus staining the little liquidity left. This motivation necessitated examination of credit management mechanisms in quoted banks on the floor of Nigerian Exchange Group, spanning a decade, from 2013 to 2022. Correlational and ex-post facto design were used for the sets of secondary data. Net interest margin was a proxy for financial performance while the explanatory variables were proxy with; asset quality, credit risk and liquidity risk. The random effect regression result showed that, liquidity risk had negative and significant effect on financial performance of quoted banks on the floor of Nigerian Exchange Group. This showed that, the higher the liquidity risk, the lower the performance level recorded by quoted banks on the floor of Nigerian Exchange Group. Asset quality and credit risk had negative but insignificant effect on the financial performance of quoted banks on the floor of Nigerian Exchange Group. Therefore, the study recommended that, to mitigate financial failure, quoted banks on the floor of Nigerian Exchange Group should ensure lower liquidity risk
