    Yoruba chanters\u27 performance strategies

    No full text
As the origin of oral literature, Africa houses outspoken communities who express their beliefs, thoughts and ideas laced with the long-age experience, knowledge and wisdom of the forefathers through oral performance – chanting. However, the strategies employed in chanting as a genre of Yoruba oral literature have not been well explicated in existing literature. Hence, this study attempted a critical examination of the various components of oral performance often employed by oral artists in chanting performances. This paper is qualitative research which employs a descriptive analysis of the strategies (also known as learning materials) employed in chanting. Eight (8) poems and dialogue were randomly selected from different forms of chants like ifá chant, èdá, ìjálá, ijuba, oríkì, rárà among others due to their general relevance and usage to examine the presence of these strategies. A random sampling technique was adopted for the study. Findings show that effective use of these learning materials such as confidence, voice, common sense, memorization, shyness, paying homage, singing, humour, and lineage appraisal enriches Yorùbá chanting performance and promotes cultural heritage. This study concludes that chanting, with its strategies, is an effective tool for teaching Yoruba literature, serves as an effective instructional communication tool and draws users to the ambience of their familiar environment

Biofilm is a matrix formed by microorganisms due to the secretion of exopolymeric substances. Lactobacillus is a gram positive rod shape bacteria, it causes dental caries and has the ability of forming biofilms. Azadiratcha indica (neem plant) is a fast growing plants used in traditional medicines and has antimicrobial activities. This study aimed at the determination of inhibitory activities of Azadirachta indica on biofilm production by Lactobacillus spp. The phytochemical extraction was done using cold maceration method. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Sub-Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (Sub-MIC) were evaluated using micro broth dilution method. The biofilm and antibiofilm determination were done using the crystal violet assay. Results from the study showed that neem Leafs and stem contain tannins, saponins, phenols, flavonoids, alkaloids and cardenoloids. Lactobacillus spp is a positive biofilm former (Moderate biofilm) with 0.201 mean optical density (OD) value at 620 nm. Sub-MIC for Leaf ethanolic extract (LAE), Leaf aqueous extract (LEE), Stem ethanolic extract (SAE), and stem aqueous extract (SEE) against Lactobacillus spp was at 0.78   mg/mL, 0.20   mg/mL, 0.78   mg/mL, and 0.39   mg/mL respectively. The LEE, SAE, and SEE inhibited biofilm production from moderate biofilm former at 0.201 to a weak biofilm former at 0.121, 0.140, and 0.093 mean OD value at 620nm respectively. A. indica inhibited biofilm production of Lactobacillus spp this might be due to phytochemical compounds present. Neem plants may be combined with antibiotics to improve effectiveness in treatment of dental caries and plaques

The paper studied collaborative skills among teachers at the schools as a predictor of their teaching accomplishment in public secondary schooling in Delta State, Nigeria. 2 research questions and 2 null hypotheses raised to guide the study.  The descriptive survey design was embraced. The population of this study consists of all 11,125 teachers distributed over the 477 public secondary schools in Delta State, out of which 390 teachers representing 5.32% of the population were used as respondents. A structured questionnaires titled: Teachers’ Collaborative Skills for Job Performance Questionnaire was used to obtain data from the field. The reliability coefficients of the instruments (Social Interaction for Job Performance and Positive Interdependence for Job Performance, had 0.79 and 0.80, respectively were determined using Cronbach Alpha Statistics. mean and standard deviation were used in answering the research questions and the null hypotheses were tested at a 0.05 level of significance using z-test statistics. Findings revealed that teachers’ social interaction for job performance and positive interdependence for job performance will improve and guarantee job performance in Public Senior Secondary Schools in Delta State, Nigeria and these were found to be significant at 0.05 level of significance; Based on the findings of the study, and the discussions on them, it was concluded that appropriate teacher’s collaborative skills will improve and guarantee effective job performance, it was recommended among others that to enhance further interrelationship, teachers should set up a collective goal, create recompenses for their success, and split the work-force of the conveyance of instruction

    Get PDF
This article reviews the Swynnerton Plan from 1954, which was devised by the colonial government to address the grievances of African farmers in rural areas. The main objective of the Plan was to shift the focus from large-scale European farming to profitable small-scale African agriculture. The purpose of this review was to draw lessons from the past to propose policy recommendations for a sustainable agricultural sector in Kenya. In order to gather and analyse data, this paper conducted a descriptive literature review.  The findings indicate that studying the Swynnerton Plan can offer valuable insights into the effectiveness of past approaches in shaping the current and future landscape of agriculture in Kenya. The implementation of the Swynnerton Plan brought significant changes to African agriculture during colonial period. If a similar transformative policy initiative is developed and put into action, Kenya has the potential to not only attain food self-sufficiency but also emerge as a major agricultural exporter, thereby fostering sustainable growth. This research adds to the existing literature emphasising the importance of exploring historical patterns to guide effective decision-making for the present and future. A historical viewpoint can enable policymakers in the agricultural sector to comprehend current challenges with enhanced clarity

This paper examines the language of power and control in Benjamin Séhene’s Le Feu Sous la Soutane, through a masculinist lens. The paper focuses on how rape is portrayed as an act of dominance and authority where language is used as a tool of power and control. The aim of this research is to examine the subtleties of sexual violence within the text and explore the role of patriarchal language in reinforcing acts of domination. The objective is to reveal how linguistic expressions in Le Feu Sous la Soutane contribute to the perpetuation of toxic masculinity and institutionalized oppression through a close examination of the narrative. Using a thematic analysis method, the research employed a critical masculinist analysis approach to expose the underlying power dynamics, by dissecting the language and dialogue within the text. This approach allows for a distinct examination of how gendered language enables cruelty, authority, and the marginalization of victims. The findings reveal that Séhene’s work demonstrates the convoluted system of power relations in which language is used as a weapon of compulsion to sustain gendered violence. The novel reveals the complicity of institutional structures, particularly religious ones, in fortifying these dynamics. The study concludes drawn suggestively, that Séhene’s work not only draw attention to the pervasive nature of male dominance but also challenges the reader to confront the implications of such power dynamics in real-world structures. This research adds to larger discussions on gender, power, and justice in literature and society by highlighting these control mechanisms
