    Tadpoles and Turtles: Can You Smell that Smell?

    Animal behavior is a vast field of study, including experiments into predator prey relationships across freshwater ecosystems. Previous studies have demonstrated that tadpoles are capable of responding to aquatic predator chemical cues, including dragonfly larvae, fish, snake, crayfish, and even conspecific tadpoles. However, little is known regarding tadpole anti-predatory responses to freshwater turtles. Therefore, we investigated whether tadpole respond to chemical cues of turtles found in the same pond. We found Upland Chorus frog tadpoles decreased their movement, increased their latency to move, and avoided areas where Painted turtle stimulus was injected. Our study adds to the body of knowledge on the ability of tadpoles to detect turtles as predators. Future studies could further investigate these ecological relationships in pond-dwelling herpetofauna

    This paper describes an assignment designed for use in an undergraduate Principles of Economics course. The assignment is a pedagogical tool that encourages collaborative problem-solving and the use of recent up-to-date data from the Federal Reserve Economics Data (FRED) to compute and analyze the price and income elasticities of demand. This tool is an efficient way for undergraduate economics students to understand the price and income elasticity of demand, gain valuable experience using public datasets, and develop their computer skills without taking classes outside of the economics major

    The Impact of Subjective Risk Analysis on Real Estate Prices in the Nisqually Region Following the 2001 Nisqually Earthquake

    Earthquakes are an environmental hazard that pose great risks to communities almost every day. With earthquakes, the main cause of concern is physical destruction of property, however, there are also psychological effects that are researched and discussed much less. In 2001, the Nisqually area of western Washington experienced a substantial earthquake that produced minimal physical damage but caused a significant decrease in real estate prices. Studying single-family homes from 1986-2012, this research utilizes hedonic property models to measure the change in consumer’s subjective risk calculations with reference to real estate purchases after the Nisqually earthquake, measure the relationship between earthquake intensity felt and real estate price, and measure how long price declines persisted after the event

    James Edward Russom (Eddie) talks about his life growing up in Ronald Washington and later going to High School in Cle Elum and working at stores in town while still in high school. He served in the marines before working in the coal mines briefly. He also discusses his other career as an industrial painter. He explains his love of dancing and how his sister taught him to swing dance. He mentions attending Central Washington College of Education with his wife. He also talks about skiing and how he always tried to have jobs that allowed him to take time off to ski. He skied until he was seventy years ald and the doctor advised him to stop.     New Far-Infrared Laser Frequencies Generated by CH3CN, CD3CN, 13CH3I, CD3I, and 13CD3I

    Heterodyne techniques have been used to experimentally determine, for the first time, the frequencies for nineteen laser emissions ranging from 264 to 984 GHz. These laser emissions were generated by optically pumping either CH3CN, CD3CN, 13CH3, CD3I, or 13CD3I with a CO2 laser. This includes the newly discovered 566.325-μ m laser emission from optically pumped 13CD3I. The fractional uncertainties with which these frequencies were experimentally determined, up to ± 5 × 10− 7, were of sufficient accuracy to confirm or revise seven previously proposed far-infrared laser assignments
