Expanding the Confucian Framework: Consequences and Character
Get PDFTypically, Western moral philosophy has sought to understand questions of right and wrong in the absence of Eastern tradition. Yet, Aristotelian ethics has long been used as a lens with which Chinese philosophy can be read from a Western perspective. Since Confucianism, in particular, seems to acquiesce rather well with a virtue ethics, other moral philosophies are seldom applied to the Confucian canon. In this paper, I apply a consequentialist ethics, in support of existing philosophical papers following a similar consequentialist approach. Through this, Confucianism can be seen as a system designed to optimize collective efficacy in society, by stressing actions which lead to positive consequences. This lens allows for an expansion of consequentialist ethics into Confucian philosophy, while also opening Western moral philosophy to a new perspective
Spelling, Handwriting, and Process: Writing Instruction Strategies for Students with Intellectual and Learning Disabilities
Get PDFThis manuscript examines how educators can improve their writing instruction for students with intellectual and learning disabilities. It outlines the challenges that these students face in writing and describes research conducted in these areas of need. The goal was to examine many studies and compare the methods used in them, with the objective of finding the most effective research-based practices to use in intermediate elementary classrooms. Specifically, this work analyzes writing in three different components: spelling, handwriting, and the writing process. Analytic vs. Synthetic, Distinction or Myth?: Kant’s Kantribution, Quine’s Inquisition, Grice and Strawson’s Salvation
Get PDFPhilosophers have relied heavily on the distinction between analytic truths and synthetic ones for various philosophical pursuits. In this paper I explore Immanuel Kant’s explanation of the distinction, W.V.O. Quine’s qualms with it, and the attempt of H.P. Grice and Strawson at saving synonymy in order to salvage analyticity from doubts. I conclude that although valiant, the efforts put forth by Grice and Strawson fall short. I argue that this is so because they attack a weak interpretation of Quine’s contention

This essay will propose a novel two-stage system for moral decision-making which combines the two. I will explain how this model retains the strengths of contractualism and consequentialism, whilst resolving many of the problems with the theories as they stand alone

He also talks about skiing and how he always tried to have jobs that allowed him to take time off to ski. He skied until he was seventy years ald and the doctor advised him to stop. INFANT-MATERNAL BEHAVIORS DURING NON-MATERNAL INFANT HANDLING INTERACTIONS IN CAPTIVE LONG- TAILED MACAQUES (MACACA FASCICULARIS)
Get PDFThe main caregiver of an infant Long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis) is their mother. However, mothers often allow infant-handling interactions with other individuals in their group. While there are many hypotheses to explain the infant-handling phenomenon, there are few systematic investigations of how mothers respond to non-mother infant-handling interactions. At Alpha Genesis Inc., I conducted 33 focal follows for each mother-infant dyad (N = 10) over an eight-week period on captive macaques to determine if infant behaviors during infant-handling interactions resulted in mothers interrupting the interaction; if mothers were more likely to interrupt infant-handling interactions when infants showed signs of distress; and if such interruptions varied in their frequency between primiparous and multiparous mothers. Analyses revealed that, in the absence of infant stress behaviors, primiparous mothers are more likely than multiparous mothers to interrupt interactions by displaying maternal restraint of the infant or maternal aggression to the non-mother whereas multiparous mothers were more likely to reject such interactions before they began. These findings indicate that a mother’s parenting experience may affect the social interactions of their offspring; while also suggesting that infant handling interactions may have little to do with mother-infant bonding and more to do with factors like hierarchy, relationships, and their environment
From Mirrors to Wallpapers: A Virtual Math Circle Module on Symmetry
Get PDFSymmetry is a natural property that children see in their everyday lives; it also has deep mathematical connections to areas like tiling and objects like wallpaper groups. The Tucson Math Circle (TMC) presents a 7-part module on symmetry that starts with reflective symmetry and culminates in the deconstruction of wallpapers into their ‘generating tiles’. This module utilizes a scaffolded, hands-on approach to cover old and new mathematical topics with various interactive activities; all activities are made available through free web-based platforms. In this paper, we provide lesson plans for the various activities used, and discuss their online implementation with Zoom, Miro, and the TMC Widget. We touch on the benefits and disadvantages of the online environment, and provide suggestions for moving these activities to an in-person format. We also include links to files in our Google Drive, where members of the Math Circle community can download our worksheets and Miro board templates
