Functional Group Fun: Piloting a Series of Minigames Help Students Learn Functional Groups

    Get PDF
Functional groups are a foundational concept for Organic Chemistry students to master; however, they are a common stumbling block due to the structural similarities between related functional groups and the variety of functional groups that appear in the course. Prior work at other institutions have had success using a games-based approach to teach and reinforce functional group concepts. In this work, first semester Organic Chemistry and Intro to Organic Chemistry laboratory students participated in a virtual “Functional Group Field Day” consisting of a series of mini games primarily administered through the streaming platform, Twitch. Three main styles of mini games were utilized in the field day: a tile matching game, a “Heads Up” style game, and several fastest-finger multiple choice games. Pre- and post-surveys were used to assess student confidence and improvement in identifying and utilizing functional groups. From preliminary data analysis, an increase in student confidence and correct functional group identification from pre- to post-survey data have been observed

Perceptions of Infusion Pump Alarms among Experienced Nurses versus Novice Nurses

    Get PDF
In nursing, infusion pumps are used daily to provide critical medications, fluids, and nutrition to patients. The alarm signals on these pumps can alert nurses to potential issues with the infusion, but some of these alarms are not clinically significant. In this study, the student researcher determined whether there was a statistically significant difference in the perceptions of infusion pump alarms among experienced and novice nurses. The student researcher hypothesized the novice nurses would have a higher perception of infusion pump alarms. The student researcher had the education department at a rural hospital in the southeastern United States distribute an infusion pump alarm survey to both experienced and novice nurses during mandatory training. The student researcher received 50 total survey responses after 17 were discarded for not meeting criteria. After the data was collected, a t-test was performed resulting in a p value of 0.208 causing the student researcher to fail to reject the null hypothesis showing no statistically significant difference among experienced and novice nurses. In future studies, the student researcher recommends sampling more nurses from a variety of hospitals and ensuring nurses properly fill out the survey. Regarding nursing practice, the student researcher recommends teaching proper pump use to improve staff response to alarms

What Are the Life Experiences of Health Care Professionals Working During the COVID Pandemic?

    Get PDF
Since the end of December 2019, a virus named Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly worldwide. First originated in Wuhan China, COVID-19 was declared an international public health emergency by the World Health Organization on January 30, 2020. On March 11, 2020, the COVID-19 outbreak was declared a pandemic. Approximately, there were 792,000 deaths attributed to COVID 19 as of August 21, 2020. Photovoice is a highly recommended participatory research method first introduced by Wang and Burris in the early 90s. The main purpose of photovoice was to give people a way to reflect, talk, learn, share, and make a difference for themselves and others through photography. Health care professionals are vital resources all around the world. Their health and safety are urgently important for outbreak control in addition to continuous patient safety. Since research participants know more about their lives than anyone else, qualitative research becomes more based in themes that are significant to the individuals it relates to. Photovoice was used to give participants the opportunity to be directly involved in the research process. Although a few studies have examined the experiences of health care providers during the COVID pandemic, very few have used photovoice to show these experiences. To our knowledge, no qualitative photovoice studies have been conducted or published. Therefore, the purpose of this research project is to understand the life experiences of health care professionals working during the COVID pandemic using the photovoice method
