Racial Disparities Among Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease

    No full text
Research in Parkinson’s Disease has failed to consider diverse populations and the unique trials these populations face in terms of accessing healthcare. Many studies have been done to identify the existence of racial disparities among individuals with Parkinson’s Disease, but no conclusive evidence regarding the cause of these disparities has been found. I am in the process of administering a researcher-developed survey to adults who have been diagnosed with Parkinson\u27s Disease or Parkinsonism to identify the presence and cause of racial disparities among individuals with PD. I anticipate that the survey data will reveal inequalities between Black and/or African Americans with PD and Whites regarding distrust of the healthcare system, lack of referral for therapy, and prior research participation. This research has the potential to positively impact individuals, specifically Black and/or African Americans, with PD; by highlighting disparities within these communities, the process of proposing and implementing realistic solutions to mend them can begin

To Suppress Riots and Insurrections: The Transformation of Mississippi’s State Militia 1868-1890

    No full text
This thesis argues that between the ratification of Mississippi’s constitutions of 1868 and 1890, the state militia transformed from a tool to preserve the Republican Party and its predominately African American constituency, to a weapon of the Democratic Party to enforce white supremacy. Drawing on the militia’s legislated purpose “to suppress riots and insurrections” found in both the 1868 and 1890 constitutions, this thesis examines how race riots became the sole reason for militia deployment in late nineteenth century Mississippi and reveals how those alleged riots permitted Mississippi’s governors to undergird political power through shows of force. This work focuses on two “race riots”: The Clinton Riot of 1875 in Clinton, Mississippi, and the Leflore County Massacre of 1889 in Leflore County, Mississippi. Extensive primary documents such as newspapers, personal letters, and legal testimonies prove that the state militia stood at the forefront of historical change in Mississippi. Ultimately, the state militia operated as a symbolic show of force (rather than an active fighting force) tied to race riots despite who held political power in the state, while its goals and constituency changed entirely

Who truly deserves to be credited with discovering calculus: Newton, Gauss, or Leibniz?

    No full text
Calculus is a very broad and integrative sub-topic of mathematics. Calculus has impacted many scientific and mathematical discoveries. Furthermore, the impact of Calculus is often seen in the educational sector. However, there are still many questions based around the discovery of Calculus. Many distinguished mathematicians have made contributions to the discovery of Calculus. However, who would be the true “Father of Calculus.” The title is often interchanged through 3 Mathematicians: Isaac Newton, Carl Friedrich Gauss, and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Their astonishing contributions would make Calculus an exquisite topic to study

Ethnic Minorities and Barriers to Patient Care

    No full text
My project involves focusing on the various challenges minority nurses face when attempting to provide patient care in various healthcare settings in the southeastern region of the United States. The purpose of the study is to bring more awareness to the inequality of nurses in healthcare from ethnic minority backgrounds and to assist with creating a change. The study utilizes those who are presently working in the nursing profession within the state of Mississippi to determine how barriers affect and/or have affected them within both their work environment and personal lives. The data collection focuses on various aspects such as age, nursing title, years within the profession, ethnic identity, etc. The data collection is being conducted by surveying nurses at various locations within the state utilizing a tool that asks them to share their perceptions and experiences. Once all data has been retrieved, it will be compiled and assessed to view various overarching themes
