Review of Antiviral Medicinal Plants used in Taraba State Nigeria: A Possible Source for COVID-19 Drug Discovery
Purpose: Coronavirus also known as COVID-19 is a viral infection that has been tagged as the greatest pandemic since the existence of humans by the WHO, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people globally; with the USA one of the highest. The full biology of the virus is yet to be known. This study reviews sixteen natural antiviral plants used in Taraba State to manage viral infections locally.
Subjects and Methods: Sixteen medicinal plants popularly used as antiviral agents in Taraba State, Nigeria were surveyed based on a field-trip experience with herbal medicine practitioners in the three zones of the state. Plants that were in both zones were counted as the same. The plants that are majorly used for various viral infections are Allium sativum, Zingiber officinale, Camellia sinensis, Hibiscus sabdariffa, Cirus lemon, Azardirachta indica, Ocimum tenuiflorum, Curcuma longa, Haematostaphis barteri, Olea europaea, Melastomastrum capitatum, Astragalus canadensis, Carissa edulis, Spondias venulosa, Vitellaria paradoxa, and Euphorbia hirta.
Results: Of the sixteen plants, ten have been reported to have antiviral properties against at least one of these viruses avian or bird flu, human influenza virus, infectious bronchitis virus (a type of coronavirus), herpes virus, hepatitis C virus and HIV.
Conclusion: The study revealed that further research on these antiviral plants used traditionally might pave the way for the discovery of potent antiviral drugs against COVID-19
Density of Aedes Aegypti Larves Based on Knowledge, Attitude and Action of Terminal Management in Daya Regional Terminal Kota Makassar
Purpose: This study aims to determine the density of Aedes aegypti larvae based on the knowledge, attitudes and actions of terminal managers at the Regional Terminal Daya Makassar City.
Methods: The research design used was descriptive observational. There are two samples in this study, namely the container sample and the terminal manager sample. The sampling technique for containers used total sampling method and for terminal managers, purposive sampling method was used. Data were analyzed by univariate.
Results: The results of the analysis showed that the number of positive containers for larvae was 69 (CI = 33%) with a value of DF = 8 and was a high density category. A total of 9 respondents (39.1%) had good knowledge and 14 respondents (60.9%) had poor knowledge. A total of 10 respondents (43.5%) had a good attitude and as many as 13 respondents (56.5%) had a bad attitude. By enhancing the knowledge of the individuals, the PSN activities carried out routinely can break the life cycle of the mosquitoes that can cause DHF.The level of education that the terminal manager has, the better the ability to absorb the information provided will affect the knowledge held by the terminal manager
Wage-Increment and Development of Black Economy in Nigeria: Influences of Inflation and Taxation
Purpose: In this paper, wage-black economy relationship was examined while taking into consideration the influences of inflation and taxation.
Approach/Methodology/Design: In particular, Value at Risk (VAR) approach was implemented using annually data for Nigeria covering the period 1990-2018 to assess the dynamic relationship among the variables. In light of national minimum wage in Nigeria, impulse response function was used to highlight the plausible responses from black economy to a shock of one standard deviation in each indicated variable.
Findings: The result shows that a shock to national minimum wage (LOGMWA) will have a negative effect on black economy (LOGBEC) in Nigeria. Shocks to inflation (LOGINFL) will have a positive impact on black economy (LOGBEC). Shocks to tax (LOGATAX) will have asymmetric impacts on black economy (LOGBEC). The results were robust even when unemployment (LOGUEMP) was included. An unemployment shock was shown to enhance black economy in Nigeria.
Practical Implications: The study is significant for the concerned authorities in Nigeria so that policy measures are taken and directed towards the causes that drive the black economy in the country.
Originality/value: The impulse response function was estimated. It was estimated to show the plots of the responses from black economy (LOGBEC) to a one standard deviation shock in each indicated variable (national minimum wage (LOGMWA), inflation (LOGINFL), and tax (ATAX)). The shocks to national minimum wage (LOGMWA) will have a negative effect on black economy (LOGBEC) in Nigeria

The study population encompasses all patients of post-traumatic accidents that were admitted to Najran City hospitals during the data collection period. The patients were invited to participate in the study. Non-probability convenience sampling method was used. A questionnaire was devised, developed, and administered to measure the psychological effects related to accident among victims. For statistical analysis, descriptive measures, including frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, and p-value were employed.
Results: The study reveals that more than half of the studied victims (57.8%) were between 21 to 30 years old. All of them were males, indicating high rate of causalities in Najran City among youngsters. In terms of post-traumatic experience, the study reveals that 82.2% of the respondents had negative feelings about themselves. The victims also complained of several other psychological effects.
