Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the performance of selected private sector Banks in India. The aim is also to study the profitability performance of these selected banks. Approach/Methodology/Design: Eight private Banks were selected as a sample for the study. The statistical tools employed in the study include Minimum and Maximum Net Profit Ratio, Descriptive Statistics and One-Way ANOVA test for the evaluation of performance of Banks. The period for the study is from 2011-12 to 2018-19, and this study is totally based on secondary data. Findings: The results of the study reveal that there is a significant difference of Net Profit of the selected banks. The financial performance of HDFC Bank is continuously in a good condition due to the high profit earned and the proper management that is employed. The results indicate that Yes Bank is in a deteriorating financial position because of governance issues, false assurance to customers, non-serious investors, non market-led revival in sight, outflow of liquidity, and non-disclosure practices. Axis Bank and ICICI Bank are slowly declining within the market. Jammu and Kashmir Bank suffered losses in the year 2016-17 due to the tune of Rs 16,000 crores during the five months long unrest in the Kashmir valley. Practical Implications: In today’s scenario, most of the banks have more Non-Performing Assets. Due to this condition, many banks go to liquation and merger/acquisition. This paper attempts to examine the current conditions of selected private sector banks in India, assisting in presenting statistical analysis that will be of use to investors as well as management teams of the banks. Originality/value: Nowadays, Banking sector is one of the fastest growing sectors and huge funds are invested in banks. Get PDF
Purpose: The main objective of this study is to examine the relationship between Nigerian Stock Exchange and Dubai stock exchange with the aim of finding out the direction of movements between their respective indices. Approach/Methodology/Design: The methodology adopted for the analysis is ARDL cointegration model and the Generalized Method of Moment (GMM). This is because of their known efficiency in detecting patterns between variables. Findings: The result of the short-run analysis using GMM shows that there is existence of short-run causality between the Dubai financial market (DFM) and the Nigerian stock exchange (NSE). Thus, for investors looking for short- run arbitrage opportunity between the markets, they shall look elsewhere. But, the result of bound testing has shown lack of cointegration between the two markets. This is a sign of existence of opportunities for portfolio diversification between Nigeria stock exchange and Dubai financial market, since the two markets are not cointegrated in the long-run. Practical Implications: The study helps bridge the empirical literature gap in stock market integration and portfolio diversification with reference to the Nigeria and UAE. It will, therefore, guide local and foreign investors with interest in Nigeria and UAE Stock Exchanges. It will also guide Nigerian and UAE policy makers to understand the market better, especially as it concerns financial contagion. Originality/value: This study provides further evidence on stock market integration in emerging markets. New researches shall adopt different methodology such as use of volatility tracking models to measure volatility linkage between the markets

Contesting Imagi-Nations of Nation and Region Through the use of Language in Saadat Hasan Manto’s Toba Tek Singh

    Get PDF
Purpose: This research paper is an attempt to examine the themes of colonialism, diaspora, and sufferance caused by the partition of India and Pakistan through the lens of language and conflict in identities. The paper also seeks to delve deeper upon the consequent breakdown of language as depicted in the short-story Toba Tek Singh. Methodology/ Approach: Textual analysis of mixed modes of reading.  Findings: The short story effectively traced the turmoil and clamour enveloping the people afflicted by the events that followed the partition. Rich with the themes of colonialism, diaspora and the horrors of the partition, the text brought the issues being faced by the people in a way that they were subtly intermeshed within the discourses of the inmates of the mental asylum, which was where the story was situated. The text, characteristically a short story, reflects the feelings of the people that sprouted during and after the partition in a nonchalant way. This subtlety and novelty of expression questions the basis of a ‘nation’. Conclusion: The short-story revolves around the accounts of a number of inmates who are seemingly devastated by the new changes and the new ways of labelling lands. Even if they are able to make sense of this imposed change, they refuse to reason with it completely as a few of them must be relocated, which would consequently distance them from their friends

Purpose: The paper examines how Urdu evolved from the language of the rulers to the lingua franca of Muslims in the modern times. The paper attempts to highlight how Urdu is still being used as an identity marker for Muslims with respect to the other communities and is a source of ascendancy, an achieved elitist status within the Muslims of the North and Deccan. Approach/Methodology/Design: Socio-cultural analysis. Findings: The usage of Urdu as a political instrument by the Muslim League and the cultural influence the language has exerted on the Muslim community led to its usage as a source of elitism within the community in the modern times. The analysis indicates that there is harking back to the highly Persianised, nastaliq form of Urdu, which was manifested in its literature in the twentieth century as the pure, hegemonic and the aspired language, true to the identity of the community.  The language was characterized by its emergence as a monolithic, distinctive medium, overcoming the different varieties and registers during the British rule through the Hindi-Urdu controversy. Practical Implications: This review study situates Urdu in a socio-cultural context, reflecting   the historical status of the language in India. Originality/value: Urdu has been recognized as a language of a particular community i.e. Muslims in the Indian subcontinent, especially those in the Northern and the Deccan parts of the independent India. This review article, through the use of literature review and content analysis, shows that Urdu is used as a language by Muslims in a way that denotes their high status within the community, due to a variety of factors embedded in the socio-cultural history of the community in the Indian subcontinent

    Get PDF
Purpose: The present study seeks to undertake a discourse analysis of the Islamic Declaration on Climate Change using Carvalho’s (2000) model of ideological discourse analysis. Approach/Methodology/Design: Two stages of the analysis were carried out: textual and contextual analysis. A corpus of 15 newspapers and media websites was developed out of 85 results attained by Factiva to undertake the contextual analysis. Findings: The results showed that the Islamic Declaration on climate change represents a critical moment in the history of caring for the environment in the Muslim world, that it represents mainstream Islam and common Muslim concern and not any single political or national agenda, that it bases its argument deeply on the Islamic faith represented in the scriptural texts, and that it has a potential influence both materially through policymakers and spiritually through changing peoples’ attitudes. Combined with other religious statements on climate change, the message of religious leaders is meant to reach areas modern science and governmental reports cannot reach alone. Practical Implications: While we attempted an ideological discourse analysis of the IDGCC in the present study, more studies are needed to analyze the influence of the IDGCC and other religion-inclined documents on people's and governments' actions to save the planet from the climate change crisis. Originality/value: The IDGCC was based on the Islamic faith to represent the ideology of mainstream Muslims and the Islamic perspective on the environment. Like the other religious statements, it relies heavily on scriptural references and interpretations
