Decolonising Bengali Theatre: A Study of Selim Al Deen’s Kittonkhola and Chaka as Postcolonial Resistance Drama

    Get PDF
Selim Al Deen, a prominent figure in Bengali theatre, questions the hegemony of Western forms in literature through his dvaitadvaita (dualistic dualism) theory and fusion theory of art and literature. Modern art and literature in Bengal, since the beginning of the nineteenth century, was shaped by European art and literature in its form, structure, and content. Modernity imposed literary styles that undermined the potential of Bengal’s own ancient literary traditions, which include the rich rural forms of literature, such as jatragan, palagan, puthi, pachali, geetnatyo, natyogeet, kothokota, etc. The well-defined and static genres of European tradition pushed these literary traditions to the margins of Bengali literature, where these were regarded as forms of low culture or low literature, in contrast to the literary “highs” created through the modern traditions. Selim Al Deen in Bengali theatre and drama counters this modernity by resisting its genre style, structure, form, and content. The subaltern literary forms rooted in rural Bengali tradition and in the lives of marginal people come to the centre in Deen’s literary experimentations since 1980s. Kittonkhola (1985) and Chaka (1991) are two well-known among many such dramatic works by Deen, where attempts to decolonise Bengali theatre and drama through newer forms, structures, subject-matters, and even punctuation are obvious. This paper, by studying Kittonkhola and Chaka, explores Selim Al Deen’s counter-modernist struggle for self-identity of Bengali theatre and drama. Deen’s use of dvaitadvaita style, fusion, and non-western punctuation are, on the one hand, a postcolonial resistance to European modernity and, on the other hand, stylistically postmodern. Further, they symbolise his search for a distinct identity of Bengali theatre

    Get PDF
Purpose: This study uses time series data ranging from 1981 to 2021 to analyze the impact of crop production on the gross domestic product (GDP) in the Nigerian economy. The study adopted ordinary least square techniques for the regression analysis. Approach/Methodology/Design: The variables of the study were subjected to unit root tests and were found to be stationary at first difference. Johansen co-integration was adopted and the result posits a short-run relation between the variables of interest (GDP, crop production (CP) as well as labor output (LO). Findings: The result from the error correction model shows that crop production has a positive and significant impact on economic growth in Nigeria. This study also finds that labor productivity has a positive and significant impact on economic growth. The study concluded that crop production has a positive and statistically significant impact on economic growth in Nigeria for the period under review.   Originality/value: The study recommends that there is a need to improve the mode of production. This could imply having an optimal mix of labor and capital-intensive means of production in crop production to boost economic output

Purpose: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, systemic autoimmune illness that manifests clinically as well as immunologically and in several lab tests abnormalities. Patients with SLE frequently get infections, which account for 30–50% of morbidity and death. The bacterial species Staphylococcus xylosus is a member of the Staphylococcus genus. This study's objective was to assess several immunological indicators of S.xylosus infections in individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus in the Najaf Governorate of Iraq. Subjects and Methods: Blood samples were taken from 60 SLE patients ranging in age from 16 to 56. Each patient has had a sample of 10 milliliters of blood taken. 5 ml were used to measure immunologic parameters, and another 5 ml were used to diagnose S. Xylosus by culturing a sample on blood agar and mannitol salt agar. culture on mannitol salt agar and blood agar. Results: According to the microbiological tests, 26 specimens (or 43.3%) had isolated bacteria, whereas 34 specimens (or 56.7%) had no sign of bacterial growth. Out of the 26 blood samples collected, S.xylosus was detected in 2 samples. normal amounts of ANA and anti ds-DNA despite SLE sufferers. The results of this study showed that serum levels of CD69, IL-21, and IL-35 significantly increased when compared with controls, despite a substantial drop in Hb, WBC, and platelet counts but an elevated ESR. Conclusions: xylosus produces normal autoantibody levels that are utilized to diagnose SLE. An important factor in the pathophysiology of SLE, which causes the disease to develop, is a high concentration of inflammatory cytokines

The Search for Happiness: Literary Stylistics in Eugene O’Neill’s Beyond the Horizon

    Get PDF
The present paper analyzes the game of happiness and it approaches the American dream in Eugene O’Neill’s Beyond the Horizon from a stylistic angle. In his Poetic Effects, Adrian Pilkington studies the interdisciplinarity and the close relationship between literary studies and stylistics. The linguist argues that literary stylistics emerges because ‘literary works are organized in such a way that the meanings potentially communicated are communicated through the contextual assumptions that the writer makes manifest through the language used’ (Pilkington 63). O’Neill uses different stylistic devices to attack modern American social institutions. He puts on stage two brothers who cannot reach happiness because of their constant oscillation between illusory dreams and real reality.    The fake pursuit of happiness will also be analyzed through stylistics, linguistic games, the significance of metaphors and the use of allusions. The philosopher Wittgenstein studies the importance of decoding the linguistic game and its role in understanding reality. Wittgenstein argues that linguistic games consist in ‘constructing an object from a description, reporting an event, forming and testing a hypothesis, making up a story, play acting and making a joke’ (Perinbanayagan 165). Irony, jokes, linguistic games, allegory, metonymy, extended metaphors and other stylistic devices will be used to map out the way O’Neill dramatizes the tragedy of the brothers and their failure at achieving the American dream of material success or the dream of family union. The final goal of the paper is to show the role of literary stylistics in decoding O’Neill’s message about the necessity of reconstructing links with reality

Fufu is an acid-fermented products produced through submerged fermentation of cassava root in water for days. The study was set to determine the microbiological quality and the physiochemical composition of freshly prepared fufu (FF) and retailed fufu (RF). A standard microbiological method was used in enumerating and identify bacteria and fungi species isolated. The total heterotrophic bacteria count ranges from Log10 cfu/g 2.14 to 6.18 and 3.56 to 7.06 for retailed fufu and freshly prepared fufu respectively. Predominant bacteria found in the samples studied and their percentage of distribution were Lactobacillus 17(23%), Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus sp. 14(19%), Bacillus sp. 13(18%), Micrococcus sp. 5(7%), Enterobacter and Corynebacterium were 4(5%) and Proteus has the least 3(4%). Among the fungi were Mucor sp. and Candida sp. were 6(26.1%), Aspergillus niger 4(17.4%), Saccharomyces sp. 5(21.7%), and Rhizopus sp.2(8.7). The proximate analysis revealed an insignificant difference in crude protein ranging from 1.36% in FF to 1.24 in RF, carbohydrates content 82.88% to83.12% in RF and FF, ash content is higher in FF ranging 7.33% to 1.53%  RF, while the moisture content is higher in RF with 9.47% and 1.78% in FF. Magnesium ranges from 38.4mg/ml in FF to 35.3mg/ml in RF .The results obtained showed that the fufu samples that were retailed were more contaminated than the freshly prepared fufu  which might pose risk to health. Therefore, there is a need for proper sanitary conditions and best processing and production especially during packing is recommended

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common reproductive endocrine disorder that affects at least 10% of women of reproductive age. Cystic ovaries, low or absent ovulation, and high circulating testosterone levels are the the group of symptoms that define polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).The aim of study: To investigate whether sestrin 1 can serve a prognostic indicator in polycystic ovary syndrome. The study included 100 women  with age ranged between (18 – 44) years involving 70 PCOS patients and 30 apparently healthy women as a control in reproductive age, at the reproductive fertility consultant of gynecological and obstetric teaching hospital, Kerbala health directorate Iraq and College of Applied Medical Sciences, University of Kerbala Iraq during the duration from October ., 2022 to April, 2023. The Rotterdam criteriOn-2003 was presumed to PCOS females. The result showed there were highly significant decreasing in woman with PCOS in contrast to woman without PCOS. According to BMI showed highly significant in the overweight at( P =0.001) whereas in the obesity at( P= 0.004) and normal weight at (P= 0.004). According to age showed highly significant in age group (18_23) while  in the age group( 24_29)at (P =0.000) and age group (30_35) at (P=0.006)  whereas age group (36_41) at( P=0.274) The conclusion indicated that reduced serum sestrin 1 levels may be has potential as a new PCOS diagnostic biomarker

Financial Inclusion and Unemployment In Nigeria

    Get PDF
Studies have shown that financial inclusion harnesses savings from the locals, which increases loanable funds at the disposal of the money deposit banks which in turn increases investments that translates into increased employment opportunities in Nigeria. This study therefore examined the impact of financial inclusion on the unemployment situation in Nigeria from the year 1991 to2021. Anchored on the financial literacy theory of financial inclusion articulated by Ozili, (2020), the study employed secondary data sourced from world bank indicator (WBI) and utilized Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) to analyze them. The results show amongst others that F-statistic value of (3.071786) is less than the 5% critical value of (4.01) indicating that there is no long-run dynamic relationship between unemployment rate and financial inclusion in Nigeria. But, the t-statistic value of (3.819815) is greater than the 5% critical value of (-3.41) in absolute terms, indicating that there is a short-run relationship between unemployment rate and financial in Nigeria. The result further indicates that as the F-Statistic of the model is 52.21126 with probability value of 0.000000. This implies that the variables impact on the unemployment rate is statistically significant at 5 percent level since the F-calculated is greater than the F-tabulated, even with the p value which is practically zero. The study therefore recommends that the government should embark on massive financial education to bring the knowledge of financial services and products to the citizens to enable them tap into the benefits therein. Again, the monetary authority should step up one of its key functions of guiding credit and loans channels to private sector to ignite the benefits of financial inclusion
