Black migrant women from Sub-Saharan Africa are among those who are consistently 
marginalized due to systemic racism and discriminatory practices. Studies revealed that the rate of 
maternal mortality among black women is over four times higher than that of white women. In this 
explorative qualitative study, we will discuss the unique challenges Black African women face 
when accessing maternal-newborn care in Ontario. We will use an intersectional-inspired approach 
to explore the structural and intersecting factors that impact their living experiences. The sample 
will consist of 15 to 20 participants. Collected data would be transcribed and subjected to QSR 
International’s NVivo 12 for organizing and coding. This study’s findings bridge the knowledge-
to-practice gap by providing deeper insight into maternal-newborn health inequities experienced 
by this population. Helps in education, research, and practice by enhancing the provision of 
culturally safe care, guiding policies to improve health outcomes, and closing the gaps in systemic 
inequities.

Molecules to Materials: Using Atomic Layer Deposition to Build Precise Organic 
Films 
 
Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) is a thin-film deposition technique that enables precise, controlled 
deposition of materials one atomic layer at a time. My research utilizes a homebuilt ALD tool to 
construct films from custom precursors synthesized in the lab. The ALD process involves 
sequentially introducing different precursor molecules into a deposition chamber, where they 
react with the substrate surface in a self-limiting manner. This ensures each precursor forms a 
single, uniform atomic layer before the next is introduced. Built alongside Dr. Jordan Bentley, this 
custom tool allows for fine-tuning of precursor molecules, optimizing them for specific material 
properties and applications. By meticulously managing the chemical reactions, we achieve 
exceptional precision in building material layers. This capability is crucial for advancing 
nanotechnology and materials science, enabling the development of high-performance coatings, 
semiconductors, and nanoscale structures with precise control over material properties at the 
atomic level.

People labeled as intellectually disabled are often subject to ableism where ‘normal’ 
bodies (i.e., non-disabled bodies) are taken-for-granted as ideal and ‘abnormal’ bodies (i.e., 
disabled bodies) are ascribed low social value, and consequently marginalized. Ableism, shaped 
and often invisibly embedded in broader societal norms, causes certain occupations, or activities 
of everyday life, to be perceived as possible for people labeled as intellectually disabled, while 
other occupations are perceived as impossible for this group (e.g., full-time work, parenting). As 
a result, meaningful societal participation and opportunities for this group are limited by means 
of social structuring and internalization of such beliefs. I adopt a qualitative ethnographic 
approach with 6 young adults labeled as intellectually disabled to explore the occupations they 
desire and imagine as possible for their futures. Importantly, I unpack how participants’ desired 
and imagined occupations are shaped by broader systems that construct what they imagine as 
possible or not.

Heritability of Trait Hope: Exploring Environmental and Genetic Sources of Variation  
 
My thesis examines the heritability of trait hope, a cognitive character strength 
related to motivation and planning for pursuit, known for its positive effects on well-being 
and performance. Past research focuses heavily on outcomes and environmental 
influences associated with hope. However, genetic contributions remain largely 
unexplored. Utilizing a classic twin study design, our study will analyze data from the 
TwinsUK registry to estimate the additive genetic (A), common environmental (C), and 
unique environmental (E) effects on phenotypic variation in trait hope, while controlling for 
covariates such as age and sex. Results from this research will address significant gaps in 
Hope Theory literature surrounding the role of genetics and the importance of 
environmental influences stemming from shared versus non-shared sources. I envision 
this project setting the stage for future studies to explore specific environmental 
contributing influences as well as bivariate genetic analyses between hope and other 
psychological traits.
