    DEVELOPING FRENCH LANGUAGE LEARNING LEADERSHIP

    Get PDF
This Organizational Improvement Plan analyzes the leadership shortage in a French language school board and the scarcity of qualified, skilled, and knowledgeable principals and vice principals willing to lead schools as learning organizations within minority contexts. French language principals have a unique responsibility for ensuring instructional excellence and learning, and they must lead in ways that transmit the mission and values of Francophone language and culture (Leurebourg, 2013). They must understand the cultural context of leading in minority environments and that organizational survival depends upon adaptability and the capacity to learn as an organization. Organizations should have a long-term strategic succession plan to attract, recruit, hire, and develop potential leaders. However, fewer individuals are willing to lead schools since the responsibilities are taxing, the remunerations are incongruent with the invested time, and the professional supports for leadership development are lacking. Drawing on multiple directions of inquiry to identify and analyze the problem of practice, this OIP proposes a change strategy inspired by Senge’s (2006) Learning Organization, and Cawsey, Deszca and Ingols’ (2016) Change Path Model. Change progress will be measured using a Strategy Map and a Balanced Scorecard (Kaplan & Norton, 2004) that fuses the criteria of Learning Organization Dimensions (Watkins & Marsick, 2017) throughout the various phases of the organizational change strategy

Creating Sustainable Support Systems for the Cultural Integration of International Students at a Medium Size Ontario University

    Get PDF
This OIP investigates the lack of cultural integration and support for international students at Medium-Size Ontario University (MSOU). The support for cultural integration of the international students at MSOU is inadequate and international students are facing social, emotional and academic challenges as they are not provided with the needed assistance to acclimatize to Western culture. Three potential solutions to address the PoP are demonstrated and evaluated. The chosen solution of implementing extended orientation and workshops is inspected in detail. Transformational Leadership and Confucianism are examined to ensure their relevancy and appropriateness to address this PoP and OIP and connected to the chosen solution. Both faculty and staff in leadership roles can have a dramatic impact on the social, emotional and academic lives of their international students. However, faculty do not feel it is their role as academic leaders and unequip to provide the needed social and emotional support that would ease the challenges of living in Canada. This OIP seeks to identify the support structures that are required to ensure the successful cultural integration of international students at MSOU

Case 14 : Development of an Electronic Health Record Strategy at the Glenburn Public Health Unit

Medical or electronic health records (EHR) are electronic databases that capture an individual’s health and care history throughout their life. EHRs are often used as a single repository of patient information that is shared among multiple health care providers (such as hospitals, laboratories, and family physicians). The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care requires all EHR systems in public health units be provincially certified; however, their budget does not provide units with the necessary funding for EHR implementation. The Glenburn Public Health Unit (GPHU) is conducting a review of their recordkeeping practices and has identified a need to streamline their methods for client documentation. There are currently inconsistencies across the unit’s many health teams that result in communication, logistical, and technical issues with respect to document storage and delivery. To address these issues, GPHU must develop an EHR strategy that seeks to improve current recordkeeping practices and, as a result, improves client service delivery

Building Capacity: A Cycle of Change for a Non-Profit Clinical Service Organization

    Get PDF
Families of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) need clinical behavioural services. A lack of capacity within non-profit agencies results in children and families often waiting for long periods of time to receive services. This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) aims to address a Problem of Practice (POP), namely, a lack of capacity within a clinical service agency to provide sufficient behavioural support to the number of children with IDD in its service area. The OIP includes an examination of the organizational context, factors influencing wait times for service, and the organization’s ability to implement change. Multiple solutions to address the POP are considered, highlighting the need to address organizational culture and ensure that evidence-based services are being utilized. The use of transformational and distributed leadership, supported by the concurrent implementation of Kotter’s (1996) and Lewin’s (1947) change path models provides leaders of this service agency with a framework to enact change. This OIP recognizes that political ideologies are subject to change, and will have a strong influence on an agency’s capacity to provide service. Through this OIP, a process will be developed to build capacity from within an organization with limited resources in order to provide more families and children with needed behavioural service, and respond to environmental change

    Building a Culture of Collaboration

    Get PDF
Abstract This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) explores how a school principal can create a culture of collaboration among teachers. The OIP’s problem of practice emerged due to a lack of collaboration among teachers at a school. School data revealed that the lack of collaboration directly impacted teacher classroom practice and ultimately student achievement. Two change theories, the Change Path Model (Cawsey, Deszca, & Ingles, 2016) and the Appreciative Inquiry Model (Cooperrider & Srivastva, 1987) influenced the thinking behind the organizational change plan. Within the organizational change plan, building relationships by developing trust through transformational leadership and creating professional learning communities through a focus on leadership approaches have been developed as priorities. The literature clearly points out that no matter the leadership approach or change theory employed, it is the recipients of change that will ultimately determine the success or failure of the OIP’s problem of practice. Focusing on an appreciative approach through the Appreciative Inquiry Model, developing trust, and building capacity of teachers has been explored and found to be significant contributing factors in the change process. These constructs support the change of becoming a thriving culture of teachers collaborating to improve their practice and ultimately improving student achievement. Leading to improve reading comprehension for students in Koinonia School Division

    Get PDF
This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) will examine the system and school leadership, required to support all students in improving their reading comprehension skills. This examination is necessary because students from historically marginalized populations continue to lag behind their peers in reading comprehension which directly impacts their success in school and life. Using Divisional reading comprehension data, Provincial Literacy data, Divisional goals and Provincial aspirational targets will provide baseline evidence as well as targets to reach in implementing this plan. Divisional leadership and school leadership skills are considered and connected to teacher efficacy and deliberate pedagogical choices which lead to students’ improved achievement. From the perspective of transformational leadership and using a social justice lens, systems, school and teacher leadership can align to support organizational improvement related to students’ reading comprehension skills. As a system, Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model is used to manage change in Koinonia School Division (KSD) – as pseudonym. Using a Learning Sprints approach in the classroom will focus school teams on the gap specific to students’ reading comprehension levels and on the next best teaching strategies for the teacher to take so students’ growth and achievement can increase. This OIP will be of interest to those examining leadership for change, improvement of student achievement in a rural context
