Biography  
 
Amelia Grace Yates is a pianist and music educator from Southern Ontario.  In addition to 
performing as a soloist, Amelia also enjoys collaborating with others in chamber groups and working 
with large ensembles and choirs.  Amelia teaches from her travelling piano studio in the Oakville, 
Brantford and London areas.  Her teaching approach is built from a foundation of mindfulness.  She 
strives to help her students perform, understand, and enjoy music thoughtfully, healthily, and artfully. 
 
Amelia has earned an ARCT diploma in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of 
Music, a Bachelor of Music Honours Music Education and a Master of Music in Performance and 
Literature from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario.  She has studied with notable 
teachers including John‐Paul Bracey and Dr. Brett Kingsbury.  Amelia is also the recipient of numerous 
awards and scholarships including the Ontario Graduate Scholarship.  Currently, she is a Doctoral 
student in the Doctor of Musical Arts Program at Western studying with Dr. Leslie Kinton.  Amelia’s 
current focus is performing and researching the piano music of Canadian composer Ann Southam.  She 
is also passionate about improving teaching policies and approaches to include elements of mindfulness 
to help care for the mental health of students and performers.  
 
Amelia lives in Oakville with her husband Daniel, who works as a Lawyer in Toronto.  In her free 
time she enjoys practicing yoga and streaming shows on Netflix.

A captivating presence on the concert scene, award-winning Israeli-American pianist Yael Weiss has been hailed 
by many of today's greatest musicians and critics for visionary interpretations of surpassing depth, immediacy 
and communicative power. Following a recent recital, the Washington Post portrayed her as “a pianist who delves 
deeply and tellingly into that cloudy area where fantasy morphs into improvisation, inventiveness being common 
to both.” 
 
Ms. Weiss has performed across the United States, Europe, Japan, Korea, New Zealand and South America at 
such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Benaroya Hall, Moscow’s Bolshoi Hall and 
London’s Wigmore Hall.  Her New York recital debut, presented by the Metropolitan Museum, was acclaimed by 
the New York Times as, "remarkably powerful and intense . . . fine technique and musicianship in the service of an 
arresting array of music."  Ms. Weiss has appeared as soloist with many international orchestras, including the 
Prague Chamber Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Seattle Symphony, Santa Fe Symphony, Israel 
Chamber Orchestra, and the Brazil National Symphony, to name a few. She is also in demand at international 
music festivals, such as Marlboro, Ravinia, City of London, Banff, Parry Sound, Caramoor, Hornby Island Festival, 
Changwon International Festival, and the Seattle Chamber Music Festival. 
 
A significant part of Ms. Weiss’s current touring schedule is devoted to her international commissioning and 
performance project, “32 Bright Clouds: Beethoven Conversations Around the World”. This groundbreaking 
endeavor brings together composers from 32 countries of conflict and unrest throughout the world, joined 
together in sending a message of oneness and peace. Each new composition is inspired by one of Beethoven’s 32 
Piano Sonatas, and the entire cycle of new works is unified by a single “peace motif” from Beethoven’s Missa 
Solemnis.  
 
This season Ms. Weiss is presenting “32 Bright Clouds” recitals in Korea, Cuba, Canada and in venues throughout 
the US, featuring programs that combine Beethoven with new works from around the world.  
 
Ms. Weiss has been honored with distinguished prizes from the Naumburg International Piano Competition and 
the Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Piano Competition. She is a recipient of the Presser Award as well as grants 
from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation. She studied with Richard Goode and Edward Aldwell at the Mannes 
College of Music and with Leon Fleisher and Ellen Mack at the Peabody Conservatory. 
 
Yael Weiss has presented master-classes for top institutions worldwide and served on the faculties of Indiana 
University’s Jacobs School of Music, UC Santa Barbara and the Heifetz Institute. Connecting with new audiences 
online, Ms. Weiss created and recorded “Classical Minutes”, a popular series of daily podcasts available on 
iTunes. 
 
Away from the piano, Yael Weiss is an avid runner, regularly taking part in marathons and other long-distance 
races. Born in Israel, she currently makes her home in New York City.

ABOUT THE FRED PATTISON PIANO COMPETITION 
Proceeds from the Fred Pattison Award Fund, held at Western University, support the Fred Pattison Piano 
Award at the Don Wright Faculty of Music, which is awarded to the winner of an annual piano competition. In 
addition to receiving a cash award, the winner will give a public performance the following academic year. 
 
Dr. Pattison is Western’s former Head of Chemistry (1959-1965) and Director of Student Health Services 
(1973-1988). He had a great passion for the piano and spent many hours enjoying performances in von 
Kuster Hall at the Don Wright Faculty of Music. This award reflects his love of music and his desire to reward 
excellence in piano performance. 2008-2009 was the inaugural year for this competition.

STUDENT RECITAL
Don Wright Faculty of MusicCollaborative pianist Raymond Truong plays in a broad range of settings, including opera performances, auditions, competitions, recitals, lessons, community music theatre, and house concerts. Alongside operas, Raymond spends a lot of his time with singers performing art songs and his knowledge in French, German, and Italian diction puts him in very high demand as a vocal coach.He is currently a D.M.A. candidate in collaborative piano at Western University under the tutelage of John Hess. He has also had the opportunity to work with renowned singers and collaborative pianists, including Andrew Armstrong, Rudolf Jansen, Julius Drake, Robert Holle, and Emily Ameling at the Franz-Schubert-Institut.One of Raymond’s passions is to work in settings that involve the local community so he can share his craft and love for music. A project he is working on involves a series house concerts at his residence in Toronto as well as London where he works with other musicians to present western classical music (including chamber music, solo performances, art songs, and arias) to the surrounding community in an educational and interactive manner.Raymond enjoys spending his free time thinking of ways to get his students to practice piano.

Upchurch, Liz

Pianist, vocal coach and pedagogue Liz Upchurch performs with the top 
Canadian and international vocal artists and is currently in her 20th season 
as Head of the Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio, Canada’s 
premier training program for young opera professionals. She performed 
her first major recital at the age of eight, one year after having accepting 
a coveted place at the Centre for Young Musicians, a music school for 
gifted children in London, England. At the CYM she studied piano, violin 
and voice, sang in choirs, as well as played in orchestras. She continued 
her training at the Royal Academy of Music, where she was an award-
winning pianist, receiving top prizes in both solo piano and chamber 
music. She has performed and broadcast solo recitals, chamber music and 
song recitals across Europe and North America with the BBC, Deutsche 
Welle, and the CBC. 
 
Ms. Upchurch has been on the music staff for over 150 operas in both 
European and Canadian opera houses. In 1992, she came to Canada to 
study art song at the Banff Centre for the Arts, where she met her mentor, 
Martin Isepp, who introduced and guided her love for opera. She went on 
to work in opera houses such as Opera North, Garsington Festival, and the 
Glyndebourne Festival, where she learned the core repertoire and was 
involved in the production of many new works, including Flight by Johnathan Dove and The Last Supper by 
Sir Harrison Birtwistle (Glyndebourne). 
 
For 20 years, Ms. Upchurch has trained an entire generation of Canadian singers and pianists as Head of 
the COC Ensemble Studio. In addition to training singers for their first major operatic roles on stage, she 
also nurtures their artistry through recital, in particular as part of the COC’s Free Concert Series in the 
Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre. She has curated and performed in over 100 concerts through the series 
since its inception, working alongside some of today’s most significant operatic voices, including 
composers John Adams, Kaija Saariaho and Ana Sokolović, and singers Adrianne Pieczonka, Barbara 
Hannigan and Sondra Radvanovsky. 
 
In addition to performing, Ms. Upchurch is sought after for teaching, which she also encourages other 
artists to take up. She is frequently asked to give masterclasses in all of Canada’s major arts institutions 
and has taught alongside international artists and other venerable teachers. Most notably, she has 
pioneered a teaching approach in which artists of different disciplines collaborate in the teaching studio. 
This was recently featured in a TedXToronto talk she gave with her Ensemble Studio colleagues, head 
vocal consultant Wendy Nielsen and performance kinetics consultant Jennifer Swan. 
 
A passionate advocate for composers, Ms. Upchurch has also been a performer and collaborator in many 
new Canadian creations, from the art song of Canadian composer Derek Holman, to the development of 
Canada’s first Hip-Hopera with urban artist DJ Lil’Jaz, to the collaboration and performance of major new 
works such as Ana Sokolović’s song cycle dawnalways begins in the bones. This immense cycle features text 
by Canadian poets from every province and was commissioned for the COC Ensemble Studio through the 
Canadian Art Song Project as part of Canada’s sesquicentennial celebrations. The making of this work can 
be seen in the YouTube documentary, The Creation of dawn always begins in the bones. 
 
Future projects include creating a series of house concerts for voice and piano. Her mission is to put live 
music back into the heart of people’s homes, where art song was originally conceived. 
 
Ms. Upchurch lives in Toronto with her wife Jennifer Tarver and their nine-year-old son, Jack.
