Exploring Spanish Art through exhibition data from 1850 to 1939. 
The analysis of data from the exhibitions provides valuable information as it 
provides an overview of the idea that the art institution wants to convey through their 
exhibitions. Art exhibitions provide institutions with a source of revenue, as well as a 
medium to promote their own ideas. Each individual exhibition redefines the artists by 
placing them within a new context and within the current public interest. This research 
studies the importance of art exhibitions from a data-driven perspective, focuses on 
Spanish Art Exhibitions during the Nineteenth Century as a case study.  
The goal of this research is to study and analyse the importance of exhibitions from a 
digital humanities perspective. Furthermore, the data collected during this research, 
and the visualization-code will be published as open source, to be reused for other 
researchers in the field.

Speak Up!: How Trauma Effects the Singing Voice  
While our understanding of the long lasting physical and psychological effects of trauma are slowly 
expanding, the subject often remains taboo within the singing community.  The subject can be affronting and 
is often eagerly avoided by classical musicians and institutions. As singers who are directly impacted by 
trauma, we understand the difficulty of navigating these issues within a culture of silence. There are two 
critical questions that remain unanswered: How does trauma inform a singing student’s learning experience 
and their relationship with their body and voice? And how is the experience of live performance different for 
those who have experienced trauma?

My research analyzes the intersection of Western contemporary and Southeastern European 
musical techniques in the operatic output of Serbian-Canadian composer Ana Sokolovic.  This 
research will describe how culturally diverse music contributes to the Canadian musical identity 
and landscape, equip singers with practical materials to learn and perform this music, and 
connect new audiences with Canadian opera. I will analyse certain musical criteria such as 
melody, harmony, text, rhythm, tonality and extended vocal techniques from both Western 
contemporary and Serbian music in the context of Sokolovic’s four published operas. A practical 
discussion of vocal techniques that lie outside the scope of conservative vocalisation, such as 
sliding figures, screams and imitating animal sounds will be of use to singers who might be 
unfamiliar with such skills. This researcher hopes to increase the visibility of Canadian women 
composers of opera and their work.

My top goal throughout my doctoral research is to work with immigrant children to help them 
settle down in educational systems. As the number of immigrants increases dramatically in 
Canada, I like to study the barriers and difficulties immigrant children face in social skills 
developments and find ways to improve their lives. In my master's program, I studied preschool-
age bilingual learners' social skills development. Results indicated that the main reason for 
bilingual children's exclusion is their language limitation. Moreover, the main barrier in the 
social skills development of dual-lingual children is feelings such as frustration and hesitation 
that this group of children experience in relationship with others, which can prevent them from 
interacting with their peers. The role of early childhood educators, peers, and parents in the 
social skills development of this group of children is significant. My research has potentials to 
help promote immigrant children’s social skills development.

My research explores how to include holistic sustainability in university decision making. Specifically, I 
examine how leaders may integrate lenses of social equity, economic efficiency, and environmental 
stewardship throughout curriculum, research, operations, and community outreach units in the 
university. Drawing on critical pragmatism philosophy, I discuss using deep reflection to evolve the 
status quo of university systems toward improved processes and outcomes using that intersectional 
lens. Based on the organizational analysis, I propose to generate holistic sustainability improvement 
using a three-phase approach that leverages existing university structures, internal and external 
networks, and participatory approaches to implement, assess, and communicate this level of university 
change. Typically, sustainability literature draws on western worldviews and methodologies, therefore 
intentional and thoughtful dialogue and collaboration with the university’s regional Indigenous partners 
is essential for authentic integration of holistic sustainability in university decision making practices and 
space.

Killing one plant with two stones: Unsuccessful mitigation of pollution and nutritional deficiencies  
Land scarcity has led polluted areas to be used for agriculture. One source of contamination is mining, 
including refinement and disposal of waste rock. Unwanted and toxic metals, including cadmium, can be 
present in ores alongside desirable metals. When crops are grown in polluted soil, cadmium can enter 
the food supply. Another food-related concern is nutrient deficiency. Deficiency in selenium is estimated 
to affect 500 million to 1 billion people worldwide. To prevent human illness, selenium can be applied to 
crops. Selenium also causes structural changes in plants that may reduce the uptake of cadmium. I 
investigated this possibility in several plant species. Unfortunately, my results indicate that selenium 
increased the uptake of cadmium by some crop plants. Thus, application of selenium to crops could 
increase the health risk to consumers in regions where cadmium levels in the soil are elevated.

Did you know that the 3D brain images we obtain from MRI scans are not unlike the 3D 
models we see in movies, television, and video games? Using open source 3D imaging 
software and user-developed packages, I created Paper Brains, a 3D paper sculpture 
derived from an MRI scan of my brain. Keeping in theme with the open science 
movement that made this project possible, I made printable templates of the Paper 
Brains available on the Open Science Framework so that anyone can print and fold their 
own paper brain for an interactive learning tool or fun creative activity. Finally, in a year 
where we are so physically disconnected in conducting our research, Paper Brains 
brings our visualization of the brain back from the computer screen into the real world 
and serves as a reminder of the creative and collaborative nature of the field of 
neuroscience.

Bribery in Higher Education Institutions: Roots and Ways out 
My research will be investigating corruption in higher education in Azerbaijan, bribery to be 
specific, with the aim of understanding its roots and finding out how to reduce it, if not 
eliminate it completely. Bribery creates injustice among students, taking away their will to 
work for a better future. 
The plan is to find a solution for this problem in my home country, Azerbaijan, by collecting 
data from former tertiary students in Azerbaijan, currently based in Canada, regarding their 
experiences with corruption. By having semi-structured interviews with them, I will attempt 
to explore various instances where bribery has occurred in higher education institutions. 
Later, I will investigate the existing literature about how this issue has been solved in other 
countries and suggest possible options. I am positive that my research will play a 
significant role in enhancing academic integrity in Azerbaijan.

Emotional Intelligence and the Professional Development of Cuban Musicians Living in Toronto 
I am a Cuban-Canadian musician who learned to overcome barriers affecting foreign trained 
professionals by leading my career development with emotional intelligence. Motivated by helping 
other musicians within the Cuban community in Toronto to achieve the same goal, my research studies 
the possible connection between emotional intelligence and their professional development. The 
struggles of this community in this regard have been previously studied by Brigido Galvan and Marie E. 
Gallaugher and the utility of emotional intelligence in leadership by Daniel Goleman. My research 
establishes a connection between these works, the experiences of members of the community 
documented through interviews, and a self-assessment survey conducted on Cuban musicians living in 
Toronto that identifies emotional intelligence limitations. The preliminary results show that the studied 
group can benefit from receiving emotional intelligence as a form of adult education and improve their 
career development in Canada.

My research focuses on the power that language has to shape our social and political worlds, 
often in subtle and difficult to detect ways. Our society is stratified along lines of race, ethnicity, 
religious affiliation, gender, class, sexual orientation, dis/ability status, and more. I am interested 
in the ways that our linguistic practices (e.g., how we use speech and engage in communication 
with one another) contribute to, or reinforce, problematic forms of social stratification and 
hierarchy. One speech phenomenon that I focus on in my research is called “microaggressions.” 
Microaggressions are frequent and subtle comments (or gestures, or features of our social 
environments) which function to reinforce stereotypes or biases about members of structurally 
marginalized groups. My work aims to get clear on what microaggressions are, how we should 
understand and study them, in what ways they can be harmful to their targets, and why they
