Solving the Challenges of Autonomous Drone Delivery 
Drones are small unmanned aerial vehicles that are an inevitable evolution of the parcel delivery 
industry because of their benefits for last-mile and long-distance deliveries. For example, drones 
can significantly improve delivery infrastructures by improving delivery times and safely 
servicing remote regions with life-saving supplies. However, widespread adoption of drones 
depends on addressing key challenges with the technology, including limited battery lives, long 
recharge times, and safe, autonomous operation in dynamic environments like urban centers. My 
research uses a coordinated network of autonomous drones to overcome these limitations. 
Deliveries are completed using a relay-based approach where drones hand off the package at 
stopover sites, recharge, and head back. Intelligent scheduling enables deliveries that are not 
possible for a single drone to complete and ensures efficient use of drone resources. This 
proposed system serves as a framework for smart drone delivery infrastructures.

More than 500 million individuals experience hearing loss globally. During the COVID pandemic, 
significantly, people could not access to monitor their hearing or fit their hearing aids, causing the 
restriction, or long waiting to see an audiologist. To this aim, the focus of my study is to develop 
and validate a machine learning application to assist audiologists in testing users’ hearing remotely 
via smartphones or smart speakers. The developed application will save users’ commuting time 
and costs and particularly help users with disabilities. The different environments can be generated 
by utilizing multiple smart speakers in the living room. Besides, improving algorithms of 
automatic speech recognition (ASR) converting verbal commands to texts will help evaluate the 
response voice of impaired listeners. Then, presented ASR will be implemented in a smart speaker 
or smartphone. Thus, the results of this study lead to assessing users’ hearing and help audiologists 
recommend a better diagnosis.

Global warming is looming over the future of our planet more every day. While renewable energy is an 
important part of the solution, it is only by improving the efficiency of vehicles that any progress can be 
made. As heavier vehicles burn more fuel and less efficiently, using materials that are lighter but strong is 
one way to achieve the desired efficiency without compromising safety or utility. One example of such 
materials, that are already being widely used in the automotive and aerospace industry, is fibre-reinforced 
polymer composites. The current polymer composites enhance the efficiency of vehicles by up to 20%. 
To further improve this, one needs to fundamentally understand the structure and behaviour of polymer 
composites. My research utilizes computer simulations to discover the different properties of polymer 
composites to provide engineers with the information critical to building high-performance and more 
sustainable materials.

Paediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (POHCA) is associated with significant neurological 
morbidity and mortality. Interventions such as bystander CPR and shorter EMS response times 
have been shown to increase the likelihood of survival with neurologically favourable outcomes, 
yet recent research from the U.S. reports racial and neighbourhood-level inequities in the 
provision of these services. The impact of sociodemographic factors on POHCA incidence and 
survival in Canada has not yet been examined, even though their impact is potentially 
modifiable. The proposed study would use databases housed within ICES to describe the 
population of children who have experienced an OHCA in Ontario to identify potential 
sociodemographic disparities in incidence and outcomes. This research aims to identify at-risk 
communities or groups, and work to reduce disparities through mobilizing resources and 
informing local interventions which could include CPR training or improved access to EMS.

Preventing Commotio Cordis in Young Children Playing Sports 
 
 
My research investigates how we can prevent incidences of commotio cordis in children playing 
sports. Commotio cordis is a rare occurrence in which an individual is hit over the chest with an 
object such as a baseball, causing the heart to stop, often being fatal. Commotio cordis is most 
common in children and has resulted in over 224 recorded fatalities. Due to lack of awareness 
and misdiagnosis, this number is likely higher. Current baseball chest protectors fail to prevent 
commotio cordis, with fatalities often occurring in children wearing chest protectors. Currently, 
we have identified vulnerable positions over the chest that may result in commotio cordis in 
children playing baseball, while also developing new injury testing metrics that can determine 
the effectiveness of baseball chest protectors. Our future research aims to explore other sports 
and avenues in which we can prevent commotio cordis and save the lives of children in sport.

Title: The use of digital storytelling in bilingual/multilingual students’ meaning-making: A 
systematic literature review 
 
My study is a systematic literature review regarding the use of digital storytelling in 
bilingual/multilingual students’ meaning-making at different educational levels. This review 
demonstrates how digital storytelling can empower these students’ voices across sociocultural 
and educational boundaries. The review asks: (1) What are the reported uses of digital 
storytelling for bilingual/multilingual students? (2) What are the reported benefits and challenges 
of using digital storytelling for bilingual/multilingual students? (3) What are the pertaining 
curriculum and pedagogical implications of using digital storytelling in bilingual/multilingual 
education? 24 studies from five ProQuest Education databases are reviewed. These studies were 
empirical and published from 2013 to 2022 in English. The review is informed by the theoretical 
lenses of multiliteracies, multimodality, and translanguaging. Because this review foregrounds 
that digital storytelling would be a powerful tool for students from minoritized communities to 
employ their heritage languages in literacy learning, it has the potential to enact educational 
equity.

Globalization has impacted cultural demographics at educational settings worldwide. 
Families with young children relocating to new countries experience distress and a sense of 
cultural loss, in terms of language, beliefs, and values. So how can we support third-culture 
kids and their families during periods of transition and adaptation? This study addresses the 
strategies that can be improved at a particular international nursery school located in the 
Middle East. Influenced by the cross-cultural adaptation theory, the problem identified is the 
need to develop a relevant policy and to enhance culturally responsive practices within our 
classrooms. To effectively do so, the involvement of parents, teachers, and other stakeholders 
in the policy creation is recommended. Additionally, by engaging in collaborative inquiry 
sessions, teachers can improve their responsive practices, catering to the holistic needs of all 
children and their families.

Understanding the sleep quality of patients with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody 
(ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV). 
AAVs refer to disorders characterized by inflammation and the destruction of blood vessels. 
They cause accumulated organ damage including the lungs, heart, kidneys, nerves, and skin. 
Poor sleep quality is a significant issue for health-related quality of life (HQOL). Sleep 
deprivation can lead to the development of chronic diseases, such as hypertension. Our 
research will investigate sleep quality in AAVs patients. Moreover, our survey will examine 
the relationship between poor sleep quality and hypertension. Most AAVs patients are 
treated with long-term toxic therapies, such as corticosteroids to prevent relapses. 
Additionally, they suffer from decreases in HQOL. 75% of AAVs patients struggle with fatigue 
associated with sleep disorders. There is a lack of information about sleep quality and 
hypertension among AVVs patients. We will examine cases of hypertension among AAVs 
patients and show an association between hypertension and sleep disorders.

The first project we are currently working on is a visualization of musical choreography 
presented in a 3D animation setting. 
 
The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm can successfully collect signals from sound 
resources and detect their frequencies. The recorded stats can be further altered to the shape of 
lines and frames to depict the structure of sonic metamorphosis by converting pitches, timber 
with rhythmic duration into equally dispersed function values of corresponding frequencies. 
Accessing the morphology of music with related visual imagining is also becoming possible with 
the emerging Acoustic Fingerprint technology recently developed.  
 
The collected animations might boost the expressiveness of live performances or give 
music videos some added flair. The attached videos are some examples for educational purposes 
only. We will delete the videos in the case of any copyright violations.
