Carpal tunnel syndrome- streamlining the online diagnosis! 
 
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common upper limb disorders. Its symptoms 
include sensory and functional impairments of the wrist and fingers. Early diagnosis of CTS can 
streamline the early prevention/ management because the earlier it is diagnosed, the easier it 
can be managed. Currently, many diagnostic methods require in-person visits, advanced 
techniques, and long wait times. In my Ph.D. research, I propose developing an online 
diagnostic tool to facilitate the diagnosis of CTS. Using this online diagnostic approach, people 
will be diagnosed more quickly, prevention/ management strategies will be targeted to people 
as soon as they are diagnosed, and the healthcare costs will be reduced. Currently, we are 
working on developing and validating this diagnostic tool in a small sample. At later stages, we 
are hoping it can be integrated into the healthcare system for the diagnosis of the large number 
of people with CTS.

Designing a Language Assessment Tool for Students Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing 
Spoken language is important for communicating and learning. Children who are Deaf or Hard of 
Hearing (DHH) require additional supports to access curriculum and be successful in the classroom. 
These additional supports are provided by Specialist Teachers of the DHH and Speech-Language 
Pathologists (SLPs). Better tools are needed for assessing the curriculum-based language needs of DHH 
students. 
Using a design research approach to address this gap, researchers and knowledge users will work 
together to design, implement, test, and iteratively improve a specially designed assessment tool. 
Partnership with Specialist Teachers and SLPs provides valuable insight and feedback and allows for 
piloting of the tool in educational environments, with real students, and by the ultimate end users (ie. 
Specialist Teachers of the DHH). Although a nontraditional approach to research, collaboration with 
knowledge users throughout the process ensures the tool will be appropriate for the real-world scenario 
for which it was designed.

Plants have a powerful immunity, so let's tap into it 
The domestication of crops for human use has improved food grain production but has decreased the 
resistant traits of these crops to fight disease and pests with time. On top of that, humans started using 
chemicals to control these diseases and pests. The risk that these chemicals have on human health and the 
environment cannot be overlooked. Plants produce antimicrobial compounds to fight pathogens which 
enhance plant immunity. Such compounds are called specialized metabolites. My research is focused on 
exploring the function of genes involved in the production of these specialized metabolites, glyceollins, in 
soybean. As a result of my findings, soybean plants will be able to produce such compounds more 
effectively, thus enhancing their resistance to biotic stresses and decreasing the need to apply harmful 
chemicals to soybean plant.

Becoming a Detective of How Viruses Exploit Our Cells
Imagine a million pieces of meteorites lit on fire breaking through Earth’s atmosphere.
This seemingly apocalyptic scenario is the norm between humans and viruses.
Although most viruses are harmless, some can become deadly to human civilization.
How can these proteinaceous particles be the root cause of human diseases and the
recent COVID-19 pandemic? Indeed, viruses appear as boring rocks in space but
miraculously become active parasitic entities similar to a gliding comet. A successful
viral infection relies on viruses being master manipulators of the protein machinery
within our cells.
Efforts have focused on determining the significance of molecular interactions between
viruses and our cells. For example, my work focuses on deciphering the roles of
interaction between HIV-1 nuclear protein, Rev, and the cellular protein, PACS-1, in viral
replication. By examining a complete picture of how viruses take advantage of our cells,
we can devise better strategies against the next outbreak.
