Michel Foucault: The Genealogy of Empowerment

    No full text
Following the failures of the Enlightenment and the false hopes brought forth by modernity, society has experienced immense oppression and loss of autonomy. Although systems of power and domination are as present as ever, Michel Foucault, French philosopher, presents an argument whereby he investigates the ways in which power can be used in productive ways that shape experience and empowerment. This paper uses his conceptualization of power and his methods of genealogy to highlight the importance of knowledge when it comes to exercising power. In this way, our attention is turned away from the ways in which humans are made to be objects of domination, and towards the ways in which we are made subjects with the knowledge of how to restore this power. Through his analysis of disciplinary power, biopolitics and biopower, as well as sexuality, he outlines the ways in which individuals may use power to liberate themselves from the repressive system that is also produced by power

    No full text

    No full text
This paper documents research regarding the roles, practices, and identities of three faculty members who mentor teacher candidates during practicums. Using a collaborative self-study (Hamilton, 1995), the authors examine the implications of implementing “particulars of practice seminars” (POPS) where practice issues are surfaced by candidates and examined collaboratively through focused conversation. The POPS are designed to develop candidates’ authority of experience (Munby & Russell, 1994) and foster candidates’ agency in professional learning yet these aims are highly dependent upon the faculty mentors’ practices and how these seminars are conceived and enacted. Using reflections, email threads, and meetings, this self-study focuses on the authors’ conceptions of their practice, identities, and roles as faculty mentors participating in the POPS and introduces “braiding” as a metaphor to illustrate the weaving together of multiple data sources. Results include assertions regarding programmatic recommendations, faculty development, and methodological approaches used in self-study research.

Parental Involvement and the Achievement of Students With Special Education Needs in Indonesia

    No full text
Previous research has shown that children with special education needs (SEN) in inclusive elementary schools in Indonesia face challenges in terms of facilities and social abilities. Some studies have revealed that one benefit of an inclusive school is social inclusion, and parents of children with SEN in Indonesia also want their children to achieve academic success at school. We examined variables that can affect children’s academic achievement, i.e., parental involvement, parent educational level, and family socio‑economic status, using correlational, hierarchical regression and moderation analysis. Parents assessed their children’s academic achievement based on academic outcomes and effort to achieve. We also examined the demographic attributes of parents and children that can affect parental involvement and child academic achievement. Our results showed that parental involvement had a significant correlation with parent perception of the academic achievement of their child with SEN, and that parent educational level moderated the relationship between parental involvement and parent perception of academic achievement

    No full text

OA isn’t free, it costs folks like you and me: How open access ideology obscures labour inequity in academia

    No full text
Despite the framing of open access (OA) as a progressive movement that challenges neoliberalism and champions the public good, academic labour is often left out of these analyses (Eve, 2017). In a bid to liberate academic labour from the neoliberal hands of commercial publishing, advocates of OA have argued that making scholarly work “free” can help to establish an academic commons (de Rosnay, 2021). However initiatives to mandate OA in academia like “Plan S” set the stage for academic labourers to be compelled to give up rights to their intellectual property (Frantzvag & Stromme, 2019). In this essay I argue that the broad acceptance of OA as the liberatory savior of academic publishing is misguided, as it obscures the right-wing libertarian roots of the movement and would see academics voluntarily alienate themselves from their labour (Golumbia, 2016). Drawing on Golumbia’s (2016) Marxist reading of the political economy of OA, I argue that devaluing academic labour by characterizing it as unproductive and immaterial negates the abstract labour that produces scholarly works. Undoubtedly, libraries have an important role to play in the OA “revolution” (Burns, 2018), although not as assenting boosters but as critical voices that advocate for the rights of workers.  &nbsp

    No full text
This study was made possible due to the time and assistance of a number of individuals. First, I would like to thank Linda Tobias from the Metro Vancouver Transit Police (MVTP) for her help in drafting the survey questions, sharing the survey with MVTP’s community partners, and showing a keen and genuine interest in learning how the MVTP could further support Moving Forward Vancouver’s campaign.              To West Point Grey Academy staff members, specifically Keegan Macintosh and Tracey Lee: thank you for distributing this survey to other ISABC schools and university campuses. Your collaboration was key in securing participants for this study.             Thank you to all those who shared this survey on their personal social media accounts: Lauren Thorsteinson, Lucy Harvey, Mia Mackenzie, Maya Schwartz-Dardick, Emily Hardy, Heather Gadalla, Alison Lee, and Emma Blake. I would like to extend my gratitude to my parents as well, Peter Blake and Dr. Leslie Blake, for their support in this project and for funding the survey. To my contact who had worked at TransLink, I am so appreciative of your time and energy in discussing this project with me. Thank you for contributing a number of promising recommendations and deepening my own understanding of how transit in Metro Vancouver operates.                Finally, to all participants of this study: thank you for sharing your voice and extending your concerns. I hope this report both encapsulates and amplifies your views and voices. Here’s to Moving Forward

Horrors of the Holodomor: How Western Nations were Complicit in the Cover up of the 1932-1933 Ukrainian Famine

    No full text
There is an on-going narrative, kept alive by popular memory, that claims the West was largely unaware of what was happening in Soviet Ukraine during the Holodomor due to a lack of clear information reaching the West. This was supposedly compounded by conflicting reports from foreign correspondents inside Moscow, and Soviet propaganda overshadowing what clear information was able to reach the West. This narrative is false and misleading. It allows Western nations to claim that they did all they could during the Holodomor with the information they had and puts the blame only on the Soviet Union. The West was complicit in the Holodomor; clear reporting came from numerous credible Western sources – including journalists, newspapers, and people outside the journalistic sphere – and that information was widely published and spoken about. To argue that the West was unaware of the events in Ukraine is irresponsible and ignorant
