    No full text
Locating and relating places named Vide-Poche uncovers a yet unnoticed onomastic archipelago in North America. Nine places known as Vide-Poche span a wide geographic area, suggesting the likelihood of a former generic function. Although use of Vide-Poche as a place name spread along waterways from the St. Lawrence to the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, this practice has only attracted local, narrow or anecdotal attention. The motivation behind each place named Vide-Poche finds partial explanation in a comparative study. The occurrence (ca 1650) of the same place name in Charente, France, hints at an ancient phenomenon. This article investigates the lexicographic context of the toponym and aims at extracting the conditions that determined its diffusion and/or repeated inception.

Community-led Recovery from the Opioid Crisis through Culturally-based Programs and Community-based Data Governance

    No full text
The opioid crisis is disproportionately impacting Indigenous communities in Canada. There is a need to evaluate practical approaches to recovery that include community-based opioid agonist treatment (OAT) and integration of cultural treatment models. Naandwe Miikan, translated as The Healing Path, is an OAT program that blends clinical and Indigenous healing concepts and providers in a community-based setting. Aside from OAT pharmaceutical treatment, clients work with Indigenous counsellors that integrate culture with treatment, such as land-based activities, that reconnect the community to Indigenous teachings and harvesting. In this paper, we present a case study showcasing community advocacy in creating innovative funding models and engaging with clinicians to provide a shared care OAT model with traditional Indigenous counselling, cultural programs, and data sovereignty. Policy needs are identified

    No full text
Understanding the Abstinence Violation Effect and its role in Relapse Prevention Treatment

    No full text
Substance use disorders (SUD) are chronic, relapsing disorders which have a devas-tating impact on the individual and society. Individuals with these disorders usually enter a revolving door scenario of treatment, which may involve multiple lapses and relapses, further intensifying the harms associated with SUD. This paper presents the abstinence violation effect (AVE), proposed by Marlatt and Gordon (1987) as a mul-titude of cognitive and affective reactions to a lapse which increase the likelihood of relapse in individuals with SUD. The AVE is integrated into Marlatt and Gordon’s (1987) cognitive-behavioural model of relapse along with several factors which can increase the intensity of AVE and lead to further relapses. Furthermore, the tenets of relapse prevention (RP) treatment are described as they relate to factors associated with the cognitive-behavioural model of relapse. The current literature regarding RP treatment is summarized and RP treatment is proposed as a potential efficacious treatment for those with SUD. Given the profound impact and prevalence of SUD, it is essential that RP treatment strategies and interventions are employed and inte-grated into current SUD treatments in order to minimize harms and enhance recov-ery. It is important that individuals with SUD as well as their treatment providers and family members view relapse as an opportunity for growth and learning rather than a moral failure. Relapse does not define an individual and should instead be perceived as a natural aspect of the SUD recovery journey

    No full text
Kuessipan (2011), a novel written by Innu author Naomi Fontaine, was reimagined as a film in 2019. This transcreation by Myriam Verreault has received little critical attention despite having won prestigious awards and demonstrating transcreative qualities as interesting as they are daring. Transcreating Kuessipan might have seemed likely to fail considering both its style and its project – far from being narrated chronologically, this “novel” offers a poetic representation, through descriptions and portraits, of life on the reserve and the fate of its inhabitants. Moreover, as a book dedicated to allochthonous readers, the question of its audience is far from insignificant. Thus, Verreault’s project raises several questions: how to transcreate (1) the distinctive nature of the book’s fragments; (2) the dedication; (3) the elliptical and metaphorical style, which accords an important place to the Innu language; (4) the decolonial project that shapes the novel?

    No full text
François Ozon’s characters frequently struggle with issues of gender identity and sexual orientation; their repressed desires reveal themselves in difficult and sometimes violent power relations. This study examines the transformations of power relations in two of his cinematic adaptations of plays: Water Drops on Burning Rocks (Gouttes d’eau sur pierres brûlantes, 2000), adapted from Drops on Hot Stones (Tropfen auf heisse Steine) by Rainer Werner Fassbinder (written around 1965); and In the House (Dans la maison, 2012), adapted from Juan Mayorga’s The Boy in the Back Row (El chico de la ùltima fila, 2006). Although very distinct in terms of language, style, tone and plot, the two dramatic texts both present twisted relationships between a middle-aged man and a very young one, in which the former dominates—physically or mentally—the latter. In Tropfen auf heisse Steine, Léopold seduces Franz, installs him in his home and torments him until the latter commits suicide. In El chico de la ùltima fila, a high school student, Claude Garcia, meddles in the family of a classmate and uses their lives as the subject of an episodic story that fascinates his teacher, Germain. At the end of the play, Germain strikes Claude in the face and drives him from his life. In adapting these two dramatic works for the cinema, Ozon makes important changes that accentuate these complex relations of domination. By examining key moments in both adaptations, this article will show how In the House works as a counterweight to Water Drops, in which the young man is destroyed by his older lover.

    No full text
Adaptations are, in a sense, multi-layered vehicles for memories of literary (or other) originals. The audience’s memories of different media versions of the classic text coexist, compete and converge, creating an extensive multi-dimensional experience. How does their memory work when readers become viewers (or vice versa) and recondense many ideas, images, and feelings linked to specific narrative worlds? The paper centres around two metaphors for memory regimes – present explicitly or implicitly – in contemporary adaptation studies. The regime of a palimpsest is based on the organic memory; it describes the individual perception of narratives: the memory of the viewer or the reader activates the intertextual “richness” of the adaptation, comparing/juxtaposing/merging different media versions of one narrative world. The regime of a network regulates the “life” of narratives in collective/cultural memory, the way meaning is ascribed to particular stories throughout the centuries, and the mechanisms of production and dissemination of narratives by the cultural industries. Metaphors help elaborate on the differentiation between the individual and the collective, the fixed and the fluid in the process of adapting, between the conventional and the contingent. Through the analyses of four film adaptations of Romeo and Juliet and a recent TV series, using the tragedy’s motifs, this paper shows how the network regime uncovers ways to make the viewer’s memory “get side-tracked”, and recall what the viewer is unlikely to remember. Via networks adaptations make their audiences remember “prosthetically” and learn more about “real” spaces with their real problems, while being initially trapped into viewing by the familiarity of old fictional stories.

From Macau to the United States and Canada:: A Transnational Journey of Longing for Belonging

    No full text
Framed as a narrative inquiry, this investigation focuses on the lived experiences of Seth, a 24-year-old international student from Macau at a university in Ontario prior to the pandemic. Semi-structured interviews were employed to explore the participant’s experiences of belonging and identity formation over the course of his transnational journey. Seth’s story highlights the importance of social interaction for the sociocultural adjustment and academic performance of international students. As universities in Canada prepare to welcome international students for face-to-face instruction in the fall of 2021, this investigation becomes a timely reminder of the importance of adequate socio-academic support for international students
