Looking Back, Looking Forward: Reflections and Hopes for Inclusive Comparative and International Education: CIESC Presidential Address, May 31, 2021
In my 2021 CIESC presidential address, I considered the question “What can inclusive comparative and international education research look like?” I situated my own experience to consider three “Cs” for the future of comparative and international education: complexity, care, and cautions. Complexity refers to the divisive and challenging global issues that exist and in which comparative education research takes place. As comparative and international education researchers, we need to practise an ethic of care in engaging in research in increasingly complex times. I concluded by providing three cautions for the future of research: transparency, positionality, and ethical relationality
An Overview and critical analysis on teletherapy
Teletherapy, in which psychotherapy is delivered remotely through telephone, voice conferencing, or video conferencing, is a popularizing alternative to in-person psychotherapy. Specifically, teletherapy has the potential to overcome or mitigate barriers to mental health services and disseminate these services to populations who may not have access to traditional therapy otherwise. This is especially relevant in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic, where face-to-face psychotherapy has become largely inaccessible due to health and safety measures. This paper aims to summarize and critically analyse the current literature that exists on teletherapy and identify if teletherapy can effectively replace traditional therapy. Overall, the literature supports that teletherapy is equally as effective as traditional therapy, highly satisfying, and beneficial for clients. Clients were also able to quickly acclimate to teletherapy, establish rapport and therapeutic alliance, and were able to disclose the same or even more information as usual, known as the online disinhibition effect. Additional benefits included increased attendance and adherence to treatment due to teletherapy’s convenience in time and location. Benefits were especially pronounced for videoconferenced teletherapy as opposed to voice-only teletherapy since it provides a visual component that mimics a “face-to-face” interaction. Thus, therapists should be encouraged to adopt videoconferenced teletherapy for appropriate clients, especially during today’s COVID-19 pandemic. While clinicians generally hold a positive attitude towards teletherapy, research has unveiled a lack of knowledge and training amongst clinicians as well as many false misconceptions about its efficacy. Future research should look at how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the attitude towards and utilization of teletherapy amongst professionals and the public, and exactly how many clinicians are currently conducting teletherapy. Further research regarding the efficacy of teletherapy in different populations should be conducted, particularly in the realm of telephone delivered psychotherapy which currently lacks evidence
An Evaluation of Family-Focused Therapy in treating Pediatric Bipolar Disorder
Family-focused therapy (FFT) is an emerging psychotherapy treatment option for pediatric bipolar disorder. This paper will provide an in-depth analysis of FFT, its effectiveness in treating pediatric bipolar disorder, and its use in conjunction with pharmacological treatments. Although the current literature surrounding pediatric bipolar disorder is minimal, it is apparent that the disorder can cause significant impairments in multiple domains of function. Thus, an effective and safe treatment option for children with bipolar disorder is in dire need. The main goal of FFT is to address familial functioning, attitudes, and coping strategies which are often impaired in the greater context of this disorder. To address these impairments, FFT encompasses three phases: psychoeducation, communication enhancement training, and problem-solving skills training. While a recognized limitation is the therapy’s adaptability, studies have found that early administration of FFT is key to success and many trials demonstrated significant improvements in depressive and manic symptoms of pediatric bipolar disorder. Additionally, compared to other psychosocial treatments for pediatric bipolar disorder, FFT is the most evidence-based approach available within the current literature. However, it is generally agreed upon that an effective treatment modality consists of a combination of FFT and pharmacotherapy. While FFT is a promising treatment option, further research is required to assess its effectiveness and to ensure its feasibility for pediatric bipolar disorder
“We actually came to a point where we had no staff”: Perspectives of Senior Leadership in Canadian Homelessness Service Providers During COVID-19
Canadian homeless service providers (HSPs) serve individuals with complex needs. COVID-19 has introduced additional challenges to service provision leading to increased pressure on the organizations and the staff they employ. Little is known about how Canadian HSPs were affected by the global pandemic. The current research sought to address this knowledge gap by using qualitative research methodology to assess leaders’ perception of staff well-being and identify specific organizational challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. 42 semi-structured interviews were conducted with senior leadership in Canadian HSPs, including Program Directors, Executive Directors, CEOs, key department managers and program coordinators. Although unanticipated, themes relating to positive outcomes and growth were also identified. Qualitative analysis revealed four overarching themes within the data: Organizational Challenges, Individual Challenges, Organizational Opportunities and Individual Opportunities. Implications of this study include informing pandemic preparedness in the homelessness sector and reducing occupational risks for staff
Symbolic Analysis of Linear Amplifiers with Multi-Loop Feedbacks in Interacting Programs Maple and FASTMEAN
A technique of interaction of computer programs for symbolic analysis of complex electronic circuits with amplifying elements is proposed. FASTMEAN simulation program, used in the universities of telecommunications in Russia, has a symbolic analysis module and is capable of generating analytical expressions for Laplace images of a circuit determinant, currents and voltages in complex electronic circuits. However, the obtained expressions have a nested (folded) structure, which makes it difficult to analyze the influence of elements on the properties of a circuit with amplifiers and feedbacks, in particular on its stability. It is proposed to transfer the obtained expressions to Maplе program for their structural transformation and mathematical processing. . Amplifiers with local, common and crossed feedbacks are considered. The analysis of such circuits in Maple shows that an expression for the circuit determinant in the form of the products of the loop gain functions is a sign of the presence of several feedback loops in the circuit
Speeding up polynomial GCD, a crucial operation in Maple
Given two multivariate polynomials A and B with integer coefficientswe present a new GCD algorithm which computes G = gcd(A,B).Our algorithm is based on the Hu/Monagan GCD algorithm. If A = G A̅ and B = G B̅ we have modified the Hu/Monaganso that it can interpolate the smaller of G and A̅.
We have implemented the new GCD algorithm in Maple withseveral subroutines coded in C for efficiency.Maple currently uses Zippel's sparse modular GCD algorithm. We present timing results comparing Maple's implementation of Zippel's algorith
L'adaptation face à la sérialité: Réseaux, constellations, intertextualité
Rivalled in the critical domain by terms such as "transmediality" and "intermediality," or approached from the perspectives of remaking and rewriting, which put less emphasis on the notion of medium than on gestures of repetition within the same "universe," adaptation seems to have become a theoretical horizon of the past. As Sarah Cardwell (2018) notes, by embracing numerous forms of remaking, adaptation studies has, paradoxically, come to do without adaptation and instead finds itself diluted within a larger whole that one might call “intertextual studies”. This article aims to show that the theory of adaptation benefits from encounters with what generally nourishes popular culture: seriality. Several examples of contemporary “neo-Victorian” television series as well as a metacritical analysis of the categories of fictional “world” and “universe” will demonstrate that the conceptual imprecisions between adaptation and intertextuality is also an opportunity to develop theoretical approaches to adaptation that are more open and consider the perpetual expansion of contemporary fictional forms.
Politics of Memory: Digital Repositories, Settler Colonialism, and Jordan Abel’s Un/Inhabited
