Parents’ A priori Expectations of an Obesity Focused Intervention and What They Found Valuable from its Health Education Webinars

    No full text
ABSTRACT Purpose: Explore parents with obesity’s: (1) a priori expectations of what they wanted to gain from participating in an obesity-focused intervention compared to (2) post-participation views of what was valuable from the webinar-based health education sessions. Design: A before and after descriptive study, baseline interviews gleaned parents’ motivations for program participation. Following 6 webinar-based health education sessions focused on physical activity (PA) and nutrition in the family unit, parents’ perceptions of what was valuable were collected. Setting: Community-dwelling members in southwestern Ontario. Participants: “Parents” (N=50) were adults with a body mass index of 25+ kg/m2 and had a child of any body composition, aged 2.5 – 10. Methods:  Inductive content analyses were employed on semi-structured qualitative interview transcripts and written responses to open-ended questions. Results: Wanting to provide a healthier life for their children was a prominent finding from parents’ baseline interviews. From the webinars, information on local PA resources and on creating positive food environments were especially valuable. In total, there were 7 themes and 4 sub-themes from the baseline interviews; 7 themes and 7 sub-themes from the PA webinars; and 7 themes and 11 sub-themes from the nutrition webinars. Conclusions: Parents found the webinars addressed various concepts they hoped to gain from their participation in the intervention. Results from these webinars can inform other parent-focused family interventions on important components when crafting future webinars. Keywords: parents, health education, obesity, overweigh

La Correspondance entre des caractéristiques sociodémographiques de professeur·e·s universitaires canadiens sur la collaboration et la coécriture de publications avec des collègues internationaux

    No full text
This article aims to assess among Canadian university professors 1) the relationship between socio-demographic characteristics (i.e., age, gender, citizenship, parental education, language, province) and collaboration and the co-writing of publications with international colleagues, and 2) the relationship between the collaboration with international colleagues and the co-writing publications with international colleagues. Statistical analysis of questionnaire responses (N = 2738) suggests that socio-demographic characteristics have a low magnitude, although significant, effect on collaboration and co-writing of publications with international colleagues and that there is an interaction between these two variables. We will discuss the impact of professional characteristics on collaborating and co-authoring publications with international colleagues later.

Multiple Histories: The Archaeology, Ethnohistory, Oral History, and National History of Iximche', Guatemala

    No full text
This article calls for the use of multiple histories to reconstruct the past. More specifically, it argues that Indigenous histories should figure prominently in archaeological discourse. Although the word ‘decolonization’ and its derivatives are never used in the article, it argues for what would today be recognized as a decolonizing approach: foregrounding Indigenous voices, conducting research with benefits for Indigenous communities, changing language that legitimizes Eurocentric views, and ‘braiding’ different ways of knowing about the past. Drawing on ethnohistoric sources, Maya oral histories, archaeological reports, and national histories told by Ladino authorities, this paper examines several historical themes in relation to the Maya site of Iximche’: its origins, conflict and ethnic relations, politics, religion, and identity. This case study shows that combining multiple historical perspectives has the potential to highlight the dynamic, changing, and sometimes contradictory histories of Iximche’s people, and to assert the relevance of Iximche’ and the Maya to Guatemala’s past, present, and future. More generally, bringing together ‘multiple histories’ is a way for archaeologists to build respectful partnerships with Indigenous peoples and act as allies in revitalizing Indigenous identities and cultures.   &nbsp

Community Acceptance of, and Opposition to, Homeless-Serving Facilities

    No full text
Under what conditions will the public accept homeless-serving housing and social service facilities in their neighborhood? In this paper, we answer this question through a basic descriptive statistical analysis of a brief survey (respondent n=251) and a thematic analysis of seven focus groups with residents of San Diego, California (participant n=34). We find that although residents were not categorically opposed to such facilities, their support was contingent on a particular approach to addressing homelessness, often rooted in misperceptions of the causes of homelessness. Participants classified people experiencing homelessness (PEH) into “deserving” and “undeserving” groups based on these perceptions. Attitudes towards homeless-serving facilities were also shaped by a belief that what is needed most are services such as substance abuse treatment, mental health services, or job training; they focused less on the need to house people who are currently unsheltered. Study participants also took a paternalistic approach to policy design, focusing on rules and regulations to force PEH to make “good” decisions. Participants recognized homelessness as a pressing social problem and were willing to consider homeless-serving facilities in their community. However, their attitudes and beliefs limited which facilities they would support, and under what circumstances

Du roman graphique au film: L'adaptation « parfaite » selon Igort

    No full text
Released in 2019, 5 is the perfect number is the film adaptation of the homonymous graphic novel, published several years earlier by Igort who, with the shooting of this film, makes his debut as a director. The idea of transposing the story of Peppino Lo Cicero, a retired camorra hitman who eventually returns to his former life of crime to avenge the murder of his son, to the big screen came quickly to the author, as suggested by the ideas of direction and the cinematic approach present in the graphic novel. However, it took much longer to complete the project, which only came to fruition when Igort decided to direct the filming himself: this element adds a specific value to the work of adaptation that deserves to be emphasized and studied, particularly in the light of the film's notebook, in which the author-director describes the behind-the-scenes shooting. Reading this notebook, we discover that for Igort, cinema represents a new frontier to explore, a challenge that he intends to take up thanks to his experience as an author-draughtsman. More precisely, the transition from drawing to film is intended to develop certain aspects of the story, while keeping a very close link between the source work and its adaptation, not only in terms of content, but also of style, in a process of transmedia (re)creation that is both faithful and original.

Locke on Prerogative: Democracy, Libertarianism, and Proto-Utilitarianism

    No full text
John Locke’s role in the advent of modernity has been debated widely. His work has been (ab)used by those arguing from libertarian, democratic, communitarian, socialist, feminist, or postcolonial points of view, either portraying him as a forefather of their preferred political theory or as an antagonist to their avowed political and philosophical goals. In this paper, we are primarily concerned with highlighting the importance of the executive’s prerogative in Locke’s philosophy, as we argue that this concept, often banished to the side-lines, is indeed central to Locke’s political theory. This partial neglect entails that some of the most popular readings of Locke are potentially based on faulty premises. We focus on how Locke’s prerogative is antithetical to the project of seeing Locke as a forefather of libertarianism. Furthermore, this paper’s arguments could also support challenges to interpretations of Locke as an early and important proponent of democracy. Rather than seeking to find support for modern theories through anachronistic and dubious readings of Locke, we focus on how he conceived of an exceedingly strong executive whose actions are exclusively restricted by the public good. We conclude that there is good reason to consider his philosophy proto-utilitarian, something that further highlights the conflict with libertarianism. As such, we conclude that libertarian or democratic theories postulating Locke as their direct predecessor should be re-examined to account for these findings
