Introduction: Séries et adaptation
No full textTelevision series have made a major contribution to the renewal of adaptation that has been taking place for several years now. Despite an "auteurist" vision (Wells-Lassagne, 2017) that may have been put across in the promotion of certain series such as The Wire (HBO, 2002-2008) or Mad Men (AMC, 2007-2015), with iconic showrunners such as David Simon or Matthew Weiner, it should be observed that a great many series, from Game of Thrones (HBO, 2011-2019) to The Handmaid's Tale (Hulu, 2017-) are adaptations. In addition, they are strongly asserting their literary heritage, while at the same time renewing their modes of reviving works, notably by acknowledging a certain complementarity with other media in the expansion of particular fictional universes.Les séries télévisées contribuent pour une très grande part au renouvellement de l’adaptation auquel on assiste depuis plusieurs années. Malgré une vision « auteuriste » (Wells-Lassagne, 2017) qui a pu être mise en avant dans la promotion de certaines séries comme The Wire (HBO, 2002-2008) ou Mad Men (AMC, 2007-2015), avec les showrunners emblématiques que sont David Simon ou Matthew Weiner, il convient de constater que de très nombreuses séries, du Trône de fer (HBO, 2011-2019) à La Servante écarlate (Hulu, 2017-) sont des adaptations. En outre, elles revendiquent d’ailleurs fortement leur héritage littéraire, tout en affirmant renouveler leurs modes de reprise des œuvres, notamment en assumant une certaine complémentarité avec d’autres médiums dans l’expansion de certains univers fictionnels
Manon Lescaut : L’Ériphile du XVIIIe siècle
No full textDès sa parution en 1731, et réédition en 1753, L’histoire de Manon Lescaut et du chevalier des Grieux devenait un texte de base dans l’imagination française. Le sujet de plusieurs grands commentaires, notamment de Sgard (1989), Singerman (1987), Hazard (1924), et Fort (1985), les débats qui entourent le roman soulignent les interprétations de la signification imbue par Prévost. Mais ces lectures chrétiennes-autobiographiques et féministes sont insuffisantes si nous voulons comprendre le personnage de Manon et sa voix telle qu’elle transparait sous la narration de des Grieux. Après la recherche de Ramond (2014), cet article vise à analyser l’intertexte entre Manon Lescaut et Iphigénie de Racine qui surgit de la parodie jouée par Manon et mal comprise par des Grieux ou en dissonance avec son récit. Aide ou obstacle – la valeur des sorties éducatives comme forme d’apprentissage par l’expérience pour les étudiants et les étudiantes en travail social
No full textField trips to augment in class learning hold valuable learning opportunities and can be transformative when observing context is important to understanding complex issues such as mental health and addiction. However, student reflections papers written after participating in the field trip were reviewed over a five-year period and identified that this form of experiential learning also resulted in harm to some social work students. Using a phenomenological approach (van Manen, 1990) to secondary data analysis, 53 papers identified four clusters of meanings related to discomfort, appreciation/ambivalence/regret, personal experiences of trauma and power. These individual experiences collectively raised larger questions around social work pedagogy and how educators should prepare students when confronted with distressing situations. We wondered to what degree witnessing such conditions became either a transformative experience as described by Rone (2008) or re-enacted individual experiences of past trauma. With field experience a pedagogical cornerstone to a career in Social Work, we advocate for ethically balancing between safeguarding students from feeling acute distress or re-experiencing trauma as a result of field trips, while ensuring they are professionally prepared to enter the profession upon graduation.Les sorties éducatives organisées pour renforcer l’apprentissage en classe présentent de précieuses opportunités d’apprentissage et peuvent être transformatrices lorsque l’observation du contexte est importante pour comprendre des questions complexes telles que la santé mentale et l’addiction. Toutefois, les travaux de réflexion rédigés après la participation à de telles sorties organisées ont été examinés sur une période de cinq ans et ont permis d’identifier que cette forme d’apprentissage par l’expérience avait également porté préjudice à certains étudiants et à certaines étudiantes en travail social. Grâce à l’utilisation d’une approche phénoménologique (van Manen, 1990) pour l’analyse des données secondaires, 53 travaux ont permis d’identifier quatre groupes de significations liés à l’inconfort, à l’appréciation/à l’ambivalence/au regret, à l’expérience personnelle d’un traumatisme et au pouvoir. Ces expériences individuelles ont soulevé collectivement des questions plus vastes sur la pédagogie du travail social et sur la manière dont les éducateurs devraient préparer les étudiants et les étudiantes lorsque ceux-ci sont confrontés à des situations pénibles. Nous nous sommes demandé jusqu’à quel degré le fait d’être témoin de telles conditions était devenu soit une expérience transformatrice tel que décrit par Rone (2008), soit des expériences individuelles reconstituées de traumatismes passés. Avec l’expérience sur le terrain comme pierre angulaire pédagogique à une carrière en travail social, nous préconisons d’en arriver à un équilibre éthique entre le fait d’éviter que les étudiants et les étudiantes ressentent une détresse aiguë ou qu’ils revivent l’expérience d’un traumatisme suite à une sortie éducative, tout en assurant qu’ils sont professionnellement préparés à entrer sur le marché du travail dans leur profession après la fin de leurs études
A Critical Analysis of International Students’ Experiences in Using Career Services by Adopting Neo-Racism Theory
No full textInternational students frequently encounter difficulties using university career services for their postgraduation career development. University career services provide very little customized and inclusive support for international students coming from different national and cultural backgrounds. By adopting neo-racism theory and drawing on findings in the literature and from my master’s thesis, I provide a critical discussion on how this lens can be applied in analyzing international students’ challenges in using career resources in the Canadian context. Pragmatically, the paper underscores the need for university career centres to adopt a culturally sensitive approach to support international students’ career development
Learning the Learning Stages: An Examination of an Online Module for Training Pre-service Teachers
No full textTeachers of students with disabilities require a vast set of knowledge and skills for effective practice. While preparation programs provide a broad array of content and experiences through course work and guided practice, the wide scope of knowledge and skills required for beginning teachers, in conjunction with increased accessibility to online learning tools, creates an opportunity to enhance and augment teacher education beyond traditional delivery. We investigated an online module using practice-based videos with embedded training and assessment on learning stages in special education. We assessed the skills of pre-service students from three universities in the United States and Canada before and after online training in the stages of learning, specifically in self-appraisal and accuracy of identification related to instructional planning and assessment. Participants’ high self-assessment of their knowledge and skills did not match their skills in identifying the learning stages or appropriate instructional approaches
Recovery of an initial temperature of a one-dimensional body from finite time-observations
No full textUnder the Dirichlet boundary setting, Aryal and Karki (2022) studied an inverse problem of recovering an initial temperature profile from known temperature measurements at a fixed location of a one-dimensional body and at linearly growing finitely many later times within a bounded interval. This paper studies the problem under the Neumann boundary conditions. That is, under this boundary setting, we suitably select a fixed location x0 on the body of length π and construct finitely many times tk, k = 1, 2, 3, . . . , n that grow linearly with k and are in [0, T] such that from the temperature measurements taken at x0 and at these n times, we recover the initial temperature profile f(x) with a desired accuracy, provided f is in a suitable subset of L2[0, π]
Locke’s Reading of Anton Deusing – An Unrecorded Manuscript Index
No full textThis article presents and transcribes a newly identified John Locke manuscript – an index Locke made of Anton Deusing’s De motu cordis et sanguinis itemque de lacte ac nutrimento foetus in utero, dissertationes (Groningen, 1655). Deusing (1612–1666) was a polymath and medical eclectic with a scholastic predisposition who wrote numerous medical texts in the 1650s and 1660s. Locke owned and read several of these works, taking notes from them, and indexing at least two of them during his medical research at Oxford in the mid-1660s. The recovery of this manuscript further underlines Locke’s own medical eclecticism at this time, highlighting the contrast between his views in this part of his career and the empiricism he later came to evince
Penser le voyage pour panser des mémoires féminines ? Une relecture de Des prénoms comme un chapelet de cauchemars de Marie-Rose Abomo-Maurin
No full textUsing a psychoanalytic approach, this rereading of Abomo-Maurin's collection of short stories intends to identify what justifies the obsession of the geographic travel for female characters. The quest for therapy that emerges therein, the mode of transport as a metaphor for an analytical cabinet and the therapeutic process that follows are so many strategies that ultimately turn the journey into a bifurcation within for the traveler instead of a displacement in elsewhere. Thus, like a soul therapist, the journey enables peripheral figures, in today’s age of mobility, to free themselves from previous traumas and from any hindrance when encountering otherness. Cette relecture sous l’angle de la psychanalyse littéraire du recueil de nouvelles d’Abomo-Maurin, Des prénoms comme un chapelet de cauchemars, se propose de cerner ce qui justifie l’obsession du voyage géographique chez les personnages féminins.
A l’analyse, la quête de thérapie qui s’y dessine, le mode de transport comme une métaphore d’un cabinet analytique et le processus thérapeutique qui s’en suit sont autant de stratégies qui font du voyage finalement non un déplacement dans des ailleurs géographiques mais une bifurcation dans l’intériorité du voyageur. Ainsi, à l’instar d’un thérapeute de l’âme, le voyage permet aux figures périphériques, à l’heure actuelle de la mobilité de s’affranchir des traumatismes antérieurs et de tout entrave à la rencontre de l’altérité et à la construction de nouvelles identités en contexte migratoire. 
La crise de l’assignation du genre grammatical : quand l’usage défie la norme
No full textThis contribution is a reflection on the current passionate debate about grammatical gender in the French language. It aims to show that the activists of gender parity and respect for minority rights (feminists, sexists, etc.) engage in their discourses with new practices and new grammatical and socio-discursive uses that ring the crisis of the norm, in the form of an unacknowledged lawsuit, regarding the grammatical categorization of gender. The article therefore questions current grammatical issues grappling with sociolinguistic uses that are increasingly refractory to norms and traditions (cultural, linguistic, social, etc.).Cette contribution est une réflexion sur le débat actuel autour du genre grammatical dans la langue française. Elle vise à montrer que les militants de la parité des genres et du respect des droits des minorités (féministes, sexistes, etc.) charrient dans leurs discours de nouvelles pratiques et de nouveaux usages grammaticaux et socio-discursifs qui sonnent la crise de la norme, sous la forme d’un procès inavoué, en ce qui concerne la catégorisation grammaticale du genre. L’article interroge donc les problématiques grammaticales actuelles aux prises avec des usages sociolinguistiques de plus en plus réfractaires à la norme et aux traditions (culturelles, linguistiques, sociales, etc.
Wrongly Imprisoned, Released as a Pauper: Canada’s Ineffective Approach to Innocence Compensation and Avenues for Reform
No full textCanada’s innocence compensation framework is inadequate and unjust. To secure compensation for the myriad harms caused to them by miscarriages of justice, the wrongfully convicted in Canada can either rely on civil suits adjudicated on standards deferential to state actors and with remote prospects of recovery, or must subject themselves to entirely discretionary assessments of ex gratia payments by the executive. In this paper, I provide an overview of why this status quo is undesirable. I then examine other jurisdictions’ innovative approaches to innocence compensation, grounded in a distinction between ‘statutory schedule’ and ‘adjudicated rights’ frameworks. I conclude by setting out the advantages and disadvantages of each approach with a view to informing Canadian lawmakers should they be interested in reform.
