Some university students face barriers to learning in physical classrooms, while others are reluctant to return to in-person learning environments because of COVID-19. Hybrid-flexible (HyFlex) learning environments give students the option to participate in-person or virtually, but there are concerns about student engagement and success. In this pre-pandemic study, we conducted a program-wide survey to explore student perceptions of and experiences with a HyFlex teaching and learning platform (n=238). Our survey data revealed that 86.17% of students find features of this platform helpful when accessing, engaging with, and learning course content. This was particularly true among students who reported having a flexible learning need. We also compared engagement with the HyFlex teaching and learning platform (calculated as a score out of 100 based on attendance and participation in interactive slides) and final grades between students who chose to participate predominantly in-person or online in two HyFlex offerings during the 2019/20 academic year. We found no significant difference in engagement or final grade between in-person dominant and online dominant learners in either course. We found a moderate correlation between engagement and final grade in both courses, such that highly engaged students achieved high grades regardless of their preferred mode of attendance. Our findings suggest that giving students the option to learn in-person or virtually from class to class does not negatively affect engagement or success and may in fact support success among students with flexible learning needs. As Canadian universities emerge from the pandemic, our findings remind us to retain the flexibility that virtual teaching and learning affords to support our diverse student bodies.
Final-year nursing students are known to face high levels of stress due to increased demands in academics and clinical practicum. In this study, a virtual peer mentoring program was pilot-tested, involving alumni as mentors. Using a mixed-methods approach, we sought to describe the acceptability, feasibility and satisfaction associated with the intervention. Study intervention involved: a) orientation, b) mindful self-compassion training workshop, and c) virtual mentorship interactions for nine months. Evaluation of study variables was done at the completion of training and at the end of the virtual peer mentoring program via self-reported questionnaires and interviews. The current virtual peer mentoring intervention was deemed acceptable, feasible and satisfactory to mitigate challenges for final-year nursing students. The virtual component of the study was considered to be convenient and appropriate, however, future mentoring interventions could be more effective by employing a form of mixed-contact involving both virtual and in-person interactions.
Multiscale modeling approach to assess the impact of antibiotic treatment for COVID-19 on MRSA transmission and alternative immunotherapy treatment options
Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) infection can occur alongside or following COVID-19, which is a concern in healthcare settings. The effectiveness of antiviral treatments for COVID-19 depends on a functioning immune response, but antibiotics used for bacterial infections like MRSA can disrupt the immune response and reduce the effectiveness of antiviral treatments. The emergence of MRSA due to excessive antibiotic usage has led to the widespread use of vancomycin as an alternative treatment. Immunomodulatory antibiotics like azithromycin may also be considered. To study the dynamics of these coinfections, a multiscale model was developed. Parameter estimation and sensitivity analysis were performed, revealing influential parameters affecting the reproduction number. Numerical simulations showed that methicillin may increase the population of co-infected cells, while azithromycin can improve the host immune response but has limited impact on MRSA proliferation. Increased efficacy of vancomycin can lead to MRSA eradication. Combination of immunomodulatory antibiotics and vancomycin has minimal effect on co-infected cell population, but increased vancomycin efficacy can reduce coinfection severity. This study emphasizes the importance of continuous research, surveillance, and the development of effective strategies to combat the complexities of COVID-19 and MRSA coinfection
The minimal invasion speed of two competing species in homogeneous environment
Biological invasion has become an important element of global changes. In this paper, we use a reaction-diffusion system to discuss the minimal invasion speed of two competing species in the homogeneous environment. The general condition for the minimum invasion speed is obtained by applying the theory of propagation dynamics. Then the explicit conditions are derived by constructing upper solutions. The analytical results are corroborated by simulations of the considered reaction-diffusion system. Our results reveal the impact of the diffusion rate, growth rate, competitiveness of the species, as well as the carrying capacity of the environment, on the invasion speed, which provides an effective method for preventing biological invasion and controlling existing biological invasion
"Inside and Outside the Boxes": Examining the importance of gender-transformative activities in sexual violence prevention programs with male university students
This paper explores male university students’ perspectives of gender-specific sexual violence prevention on university campuses in Ontario, Canada. Specifically, the goal of this project is to better understand how men perceive anti-violence activities that explicitly make connections between socialized masculinity and gender-based and sexual violence to facilitate men’s investment in violence prevention. Through two focus groups with a total of six male university students, participants were invited to reflect on an anti-violence activity, titled “the Gender Boxes,” which explores traditional conceptualizations of gender through the metaphor of stepping inside and/or outside of the box of ‘masculinity’ and how it shapes men’s understandings of gender-based violence. Findings suggest that societal conceptualizations of cisheteropatriarchal masculinity demand that young men perform gender in ways that reify traditional gender roles and facilitate gender-based and sexual violence, which contributes to a growing body of literature on men’s engagement in gender-transformative anti-violence work
The Emergence of Surveillance Capitalism in Medicine: Is this a new public health concern?
Surveillance capitalism is defined by Dr. Zuboff, Harvard professor of social psychology, as the “commodification of reality and its transformation into behavioural data for analysis and sales” which is invading our modern world. Surveillance capitalism can occur through the use of social media and search engines; these platforms provide third party companies with large amounts of data that allows them to predict how we, the consumer, will behave. As a result of using their platforms, these companies learn how to modify our behaviour through the use of this complex behavioural psychology, and we put ourselves at risk of manipulation without even knowing it. Surveillance capitalism is a new force that is emerging in medicine and consequently becoming a new public health concern. This commentary will discuss the way surveillance capitalism affects public health through the use of Google, social media, and apps. Surveillance capitalism is on the rise in our society, and it is hard to stop it from invading our personal and private lives. Steps towards resolving this emerging public health problem involve better systems in place to protect consumer data, encouraging consumers to think critically about the information they see online, and funding more research to understand the ethical implications of these platforms in use
Lost in Translation: Overcoming Distinctions in Worldviews in Environmental Impact Assessments in Canada and Russia
How would the usage of Indigenous languages contribute to overcoming the epistemological gap between Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Environmental Impact Assessments? This article examines incommensurabilities that arise in Sakha-Russian and Cree-English translations of EIA through the translations of the most common words in samples. Without being embedded in Indigenous languages, TEK and other knowledges are easily decontextualized, and results in the loss of layers of meaning. This study adopted a linguistic anthropological approach to language combined with content analysis and guided by a poststructuralist mode of analysis. We argue policies around EIA/EAs must be shifted to center Indigenous languages as the source of TEK and ensure that there is space for these languages to be used in the consultation processes
Evaluating the therapeutic efficacy of attentional bias modulation in the treatment of alcohol use disorder
Alcohol Use Disorders (AUDs) are prevalent, relapsing conditions that have considerable health-related, interpersonal, and economic consequences for the individual and society. There is a growing body of evidence demonstrating that individuals with AUD have biased attentional processing. Specifically, those with AUD tend to display increased attention towards alcohol-related cues compared to neutral cues, which is associated with increased craving and decreased time to relapse (Cox et al., 2002; Schoenmakers et al., 2010). This paper covers an overview and critique of measures used to examine this attentional bias, including the Modified Stroop and Visual Probe tasks (Ehrman et al., 2002; Ryan, 2002). Importantly, this paper explores how the Alcohol Attentional Bias (AAB) can be modified through Attentional Bias Modulation (ABM) approaches. Articles highlighting the clinical utility of ABM are summarized and analyzed, and methodological issues of previous studies evaluating ABM are presented. Overall, preliminary studies have highlighted the potential therapeutic efficacy of ABM, specifically if used in multiple sessions, incorporated into current evidence-based treatments, and administered as a home-based, online program (Schoenmakers et al., 2010). However, due to the methodological limitations of many studies, randomized controlled trials with larger, more diverse samples are necessary before firm conclusions regarding the clinical utility of ABM can be substantiated. Notably, this review emphasizes the importance of developing empirically supported treatments for those with AUD to improve clinical outcomes and enhance the recovery process
Violence against women has become a central theme in Latin American literature of the 21st century. Among all the manifestations of this violence, the most serious is femicide. This article will briefly review this term and then address four literary works whose central theme is feminicide, whether private or public. These are the Argentine chronicle Chicas muertas; the Chilean novel Racimo and the Mexican chronicles La fosa del agua and El invencible verano de Liliana, all published in recent years. Geocriticism will be used as an analytical tool to understand the relationship between violence, women and space.
In Elena Garro´s story titled “El día en que fuimos perros”, a psychological transformation of girls into dogs occurrs. Such an event is the core of the plot, which can be analyzed as an alchemical process seen from the perspective of deep psychology. The task of this article is to detail how the passage from the human to the animal occurs from a psychoanalytic perspective and the meaning of that process. For this purpose, the alchemical phases that occurred in the story will be explained through the conflict between the reality principle and the pleasure principle that occurred in the psyche of the protagonists. Using the definition of alchemy from depth psychology, it is possible to explain the meaning of the transmutation of girls into dogs. Explanation that will be enriched with the syntergic theory of Jacobo Gringberg that speaks of two levels of consciousness typical of the indigenous Mexican peoples: Tonal consciousness and Nahual consciousness.
