Beyond the Ledger: Exploring Student Perspectives of Accounting and Investigating the Growing Shortage of Accounting Professionals
This research aims to investigate the factors influencing students' decisions to pursue or not pursue a career in accounting. This study focuses on students in ACCT 2401 and ACCT 2521, both introductory accounting classes for all business majors. Employing a comprehensive approach, we will survey students to discover the motivation behind a students' choice of major and career. The survey instrument was designed to gather data on students' motivations for their current major and their perspectives on the accounting profession. By analyzing this data, we anticipate gaining insights into the underlying factors contributing to the decline in accounting majors, subsequently shedding light on the diminished pool of accounting professionals and Certified Public Accountants (CPAs). This investigation holds the potential to inform educational institutions and the accounting profession about strategies to address these trends
STUDENT TRAJECTORIES RELATED TO READING AND ATTENTION SKILLS: IS THERE EVIDENCE OF THE MATTHEW EFFECT?
Research on reading is widespread given its predictive nature for adult outcomes pertaining to success, such as high school graduation, college entrance, health literacy, employment status and wages earned. Research focusing on attention problems is also widespread, as attention has been found to be an integral part of the learning process. Previous research demonstrates that problems in reading and attention, individually, are associated with negative outcomes, and the prognosis for children who possess deficits in both areas is significantly worse. However, the relationship between reading and attention is complex and a myriad of studies have come to numerous conclusions regarding the relationship between reading and attention, depending both on the type of data and statistical analysis used for the study. Expanding on a previous study (Gonzales, 2019) which examined the unique growth trajectories regarding both attention and reading performance of students throughout elementary school, this study used data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS: K-2011), an updated and improved nationally, representative database containing both reading and attention measures for students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Consistent with previous research, initial reading scores were significantly predicted by SES, with scores being higher for those students from higher SES backgrounds. Similarly, girls had higher initial reading scores than boys. The findings indicated five unique growth trajectories with respect to reading and attention skills over the course of elementary school. These results remained consistent even after controlling for students' gender and SES. Reading performance for all groups improved over the course of elementary school. Attention, as rated by teachers, was much more variable with one group improving over time, another declining over time, and the other groups remaining relatively stable over the course of elementary school. There was a group that struggled both with reading and attentional skills throughout the course of elementary school, even though they were not the lowest rated class in regard to attention by the spring of fourth grade. UNDERSTANDING TRAUMA SYMPTOMATOLOGY AND OCD: SHARED COGNITIVE ERRORS AND EMOTIONS
Although there is a well-documented link between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), there is much that remains unknown about this relationship. Comorbid PTSD and OCD are linked to particularly poor outcomes, and individuals with these disorders are impacted across several areas of life. The present study takes a closer look at characteristics that are common among both disorders, including thought-action fusion (TAF), magical thinking, guilt, and shame. Additionally, the author explores the unique impact of each previously identified symptom dimension of OCD (i.e., contamination, responsibility for harm, unacceptable thoughts, and order/symmetry) on trauma symptomatology. The present study hypothesized that symptoms of OCD will positively predict symptoms of PTSD, and that out of the identified symptom dimensions of OCD, symptoms related to fear of causing harm to others will explain a greater proportion of the variance in this relationship than the other symptom dimensions. Furthermore, the author hypothesized that magical thinking, TAF, guilt, and shame would positively predict trauma symptomatology. Data was primarily collected via online recruitment and was analyzed using linear regression. Results indicate that OCD symptom severity and shame predict trauma symptomatology, even when controlling for traumatic experiences; however, magical thinking, TAF, and guilt do not. Contrary to the authors hypothesis that symptoms related to fear of causing harm to others would explain a greater proportion of the variance in the relationship between OCD and trauma symptomatology, it was found that symptoms related to unacceptable thoughts did and that symptoms related to this dimension were the only ones that predicted trauma symptomatology. The author suggests the relationship between OCD and trauma symptomatology could be explained by one of several factors or even a combination of these factors. These findings are relevant to current clinical practice, as well as point to several areas for future research
Walking into Wellness
Recent attention has been focused on the mental health of college students in the U.S. Studies have shown that the decline of mental health across the United States for college students has been constant over the past 8 years resulting in a 135% increase in depression and 110% increase anxiety (Maio et al., 2022). The broad spectrum of mental health addresses and incorporates mindfulness, brain health, decompression, well-being, and community. Roughly 36 percent of US college students have major or moderate depression which contributes to their overall health and wellness (Pedrelli et al., 2015). In the 2022-23 school year alone, almost 15 lives have been lost between four North Carolina schools (ASU, Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC Charlotte, and NC State). These numbers do not reflect an adequate level of wellness at the universities in North Carolina. Over 71% of college students indicated that they experienced increased stress and anxiety due to COVID-19. Their stress stemmed from worries about their own health and the health of their loved ones, irregular sleeping habits, decreased socialization, difficulty concentrating, and concerns about their academic performance (Son et al., 2020). Student wellness is an important factor in a student’s life, which contributes to their success.
We associate well-being with mindfulness, fulfillment, having control in our lives, maintaining good physical health, and involving ourselves with engaging relationships. To practice wellness, we must become aware of present events, approach these situations calmly, and accept our feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. We recently conducted a survey that briefly investigated the overall wellness of honors college students at ECU. Respondents indicated that they are mostly sleeping well at night and feel a sense of community. However, close to 40% of students in the Honors College have thought about dropping out of school, and over a quarter of students reported that school negatively affects their lives. To address these concerns, we have created a series of wellness workshops and events that address various elements of health and wellness, focused specifically on enhancing students' knowledge of mental health coping strategies. Participants are self-assessed prior to participation and at the close of these sessions to determine the impact and efficacy of this programming. We hope to create communities of wellness across campus, and this work is toward that end
Evaluation of Doctor of Nursing Practice Program Assignment Scheduling on Student Well-being
Background: Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student well-being is essential for workload manageability. There is limited literature that reviews DNP students' well-being and the implications for improving student well-being for success in a DNP program. This project aims to evaluate the impact of aligning DNP core course assignments on student well-being and managing workloads.
Method: The Model for Continuous Quality Improvement. The model steps include:
• planning: the project problem
• creating: surveys and course templates
• intervention: schedules coordination
• reflections: future recommendations.
Results: Survey results were overall positive for students and faculty. Student survey common themes included: program manageability, school/professional/family balance difficulties, and increased stressors.
Conclusion: Study feedback indicated stressors can affect student workload manageability in a DNP program. However, student well-being was overall positive regarding the alignment of assignment schedules. Additionally, students appreciated faculty availability and support in their DNP studies.D.N.P

Population Dynamics in a Mid-Atlantic Breeding Population of King Rails (Rallus elegans) and Comparative Genomic Diversity Across Their Range
King rail (Rallus elegans) populations have experienced severe declines throughout their range over the past half a century. As an obligate freshwater marsh bird, the king rail relies upon extensive, high-quality wetlands for survival and reproduction. Due to anthropogenic activities such as urban and agricultural development, the extent of suitable freshwater emergent marsh habitat has dramatically decreased--most notably in inland regions of the eastern United States. Additionally, sea level rise and an increase in frequency and intensity of storms due to climate change have led to more instances of saltwater inundation in coastal freshwater marshes, which can render these habitats unusable for king rails. The king rail remains relatively understudied compared to other more conspicuous threatened species, and it is becoming increasingly urgent to better understand this cryptic bird. This thesis presents findings from a regional survey of a mid-Atlantic source population of king rails and a comparison of population-level genetic diversity and structure across four distinct geographic populations using whole-genome sequencing. In Chapter 1, I discuss the findings of a regional census encompassing a suspected mid-Atlantic source population at Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) that was last surveyed over 10 years ago. During the breeding season within this region, I conducted surveys of king rails and dominant wetland vegetation cover types in both managed and unmanaged coastal marshes. I compared occupancy and abundance between managed and unmanaged sites and employed model selection techniques to identify predictive factors. The analysis revealed positive correlations of king rail occupancy and abundance with land management practices. Occupancy and abundance were negatively correlated with the percentage of survey plot cover by Schoenoplectus sp. and by woody vegetation (trees and shrubs). The effect size of Schoenoplectus sp. as a model covariate was driven by three specific survey points. Temporarily removing these points as an exploratory measure resulted in Schoenoplectus sp. no longer being a covariate in the top models. Using a Royle-Nichols Abundance-Induced Heterogeneity Model, I estimated the number of breeding individuals within the surveyed area to be 437 ± 218. In Chapter 2, I compare genetic variation among migrant and resident king rail populations across the species range: two from the Atlantic flyway (a breeding population in coastal North Carolina and a population from Florida), and two breeding populations from the Mississippi flyway (northern Ohio and southeastern Arkansas). Samples from inland populations were provided by collaborators, and those from Florida were archived museum specimens. Whole genomes of 56 individual king rails were sequenced using the Illumina NovaSeq 6000 platform. Population-level genetic diversity was investigated using pairwise fixation index (FST) comparison, nucleotide diversity ([pi]), and Watterson's estimator ([theta]). Population structure was analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA), discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC), and population admixture. The results uncover substantial gene flow and minimal population structure among king rail populations, with consistent genetic diversity estimates falling within the intermediate range. While these analyses show no clear geographic relevance in range-wide population structure, the DAPC reveals evidence of weak structure with geographic correlation. Caution is advised in interpreting these findings, as the sampled populations represent strongholds for the species in the face of significant loss of freshwater wetland habitat. These results emphasize the critical role of remaining king rail population strongholds within managed freshwater wetlands and underscore the importance of ongoing king rail conservation research
UTILIZING WELLBEING PRACTICES TO DEEPEN CONNECTIONS AMONG INTERNATIONAL MIDDLE SCHOOL LEADERS
"Put your oxygen mask on first" is a critical motto for educational leaders not only to espouse, but to enact. In the fast-paced environments of international schools, leaders often lack the time to make use of the wellbeing principles that keep themselves physically and emotionally healthy and connected to their communities. During a span of nine months and within two cycles of inquiry, I worked with a middle school leadership team deeply impacted by the pandemic to identify and practice wellbeing practices to deepen connections within themselves and a cohort of middle school leaders. Using participatory action research (PAR) as the methodology, I collected and analyzed data about how the leadership team used wellbeing practices and how these practices affected connectedness within the leadership team and within the middle school cohort. As a result of the PAR study, I identified two findings. First, educators who engage in emotionally centering wellbeing practices deepen connections between themselves and others. Second, international school administrators provide a holistic space in which teachers can engage in wellbeing practices and explore feelings and emotions that support them in their dual roles of personal and professional. By emphasizing the importance of leaders actively modeling practices to cultivate inclusive learning environments, study participants embraced mindfulness and reflection; as a result, the educators prioritized their wellbeing, built relational trust with their teams, and integrated their personal and professional lives and roles. The study showed the transformative potential of intentionally embedding wellbeing practices into regular practice, stressing educational leaders' importance in supporting themselves and their teams to deepen connections. The PAR study offers insights to schools worldwide, suggesting ways to improve wellbeing practices through professional learning. The findings have implications that extend beyond the study's specific context and emphasize the importance of wellbeing practices to educators as they care for themselves so they can be effective leaders for others. The study draws attention to potential further research to explore how wellbeing practices can positively affect a more supportive environment in which leaders nurture trust among teams and ensure a sense of belonging in educational communities
