    Using Film to Understand Nursing Students’ Perception for the Care of the LGBTQ+ Patient

    Developing teaching strategies to best prepare nursing students for practice is a priority for nurse educators. The literature supports that inclusion of best practices for care of LGBTQ+ persons is important for nursing curriculums to include. This research investigates the impact of integrating film into the nursing education curriculum, to enhance nursing students' perceptions of LGBTQ+ patient care. This study, involving 29 prelicensure BSN students, utilized qualitative focus groups to explore perceptions post-viewing of the documentary “You Belong Here". The documentary explores stories of nearly 27 different LGBTQ+ persons and allies who grew up in the rural south near where these students are in nursing school. First and second-cycle coding and thematic analysis were used to analyze focus group data with identified themes of “Nurse as Advocate”, “Enhanced Holistic View”, and “Internalizing Values”. The findings of this study highlight the usefulness of film integration in nursing education as one way to increase student preparation to care for the LGBTQ+ population and may particularly impact the affective domain of learning. The study contributes valuable insights into a teaching pedagogy to build competencies for prelicensure nursing students to learn to best provide care for the LGBTQ+ population

    Sex in Cassius Dio's Roman History: Portraying the Malus Princeps

    Cassius Dio, a 3rd century A.D. Roman historian, constructed a nine-volume history from the founding of Rome to the last emperor he lived to see, Severus Alexander (A.D. 222-A.D. 235). His account is remarkable in that he lends his skills as a historian, but also as a rhetorician, to construct the lives of every emperor until his death by including very detailed depictions of their lives. Dio interjects his views on each ruler, combined with the traditions found throughout the Roman historiography that preceded him, to make a compelling narrative on what makes a good and bad ruler. This thesis focuses on the bad rulers and a central theme present in bad rulership: sexual deviancy (or sexual misconduct). This thesis details the normal and non-normative sexual standards or practices that the elites of Roman society engaged in, commenting on acceptable practices and intolerable actions to construct a foundation by which the ancient audience could gauge the legitimacy or ability of an emperor. I examine how Cassius Dio described the sexual behaviors of the ruler, what they meant to the Roman elite, and why an emperor's sex life is relevant to his reign. The Julio-Claudians and Elagabalus are sampled for discussion and are used to explain why sexual deviancy is a powerful piece of rhetoric used in condemning a bad reign. For the Romans, sex is one measure by which an emperor can be praised for his continence or criticized due to his excessive or peculiar practices

    Comparison of Heat Stress Risk Within Crops Rows to Perimeter in Sweet Corn and Tobacco Fields

    Introduction- Agricultural work is one of the highest risk US occupations for heat-related illness (HRIs). Farm and crop workers, who commonly perform strenuous labor under direct sunlight, were 35 times more likely to die from HRIs than workers in other industries. Some tall-growing crops can block the cooling effects of wind or contribute to environmental humidity, yet few studies have included measurements of farmworker microclimates (environments directly surrounding workers). The purpose of this study was to assess the differences in heat stress within crops rows compared to the field perimeter. Methods- In the summer of 2023, two QUESTemp°34 heat stress monitors were set up daily from 8AM to 5PM in crops fields in Bertie and Columbus counties, in the warmest region of North Carolina. Two crops were selected, sweet corn and tobacco, and measurements were collected over 27 days in June and 27 days in July and August, respectively. The monitors measured wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT); which includes temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle and cloud cover, and is the preferred occupational heat stress measure. The hourly WBGT averages were compared to the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists’ Threshold Limit Values (TLVs®). The TLVs provide a recommendation on permissible WBGTs to work in based on breaks and workload. Data analysis (SPSS, v28.0) included independent sample t-tests. Results- There were significantly higher WBGT measurements inside of the row compared to the field perimeter for peak (11AM-2PM) and afternoon (2PM-5PM) times in tobacco. The morning (8AM-11AM) and peak humidity in both tobacco and corn was also significantly higher within the crop rows. With corn, the field perimeter was above recommended TLVs 38 hours (16.9% of total hours) and the center of the field was over the TLVs 53 hours (23.6% of total hours). With tobacco, the field perimeter was above recommended TLVs 141 hours (73.4% of total hours), and the center of the field was over the TLVs 167 hours (87.0% of total hours). Conclusion- In the summer of 2023, farmworkers in the study area were potentially at an increased risk for HRIs due to warm and humid microclimates within corn and tobacco crop rows. As environmental heat stress is increasing due to climate change, the greater risk of working inside tall crop rows should be considered in worker education and heat stress plans, such as more frequent breaks at midday and in the afternoon

    A Neurological Study on the Effect of the Cingulate Cortex in Determining Food Choice in Individuals with Eating Disorders and Active Individuals

    Over twenty-eight million Americans currently struggle with eating disorders (NEDA), which are characterized by aberrant eating behaviors, distorted body image, and pervasive preoccupations with food. The cingulate cortex, located in the cerebral cortex, serves many functions, including emotional regulation, cognitive processing, and decision-making. Specifically, the anterior cingulate cortex is involved in linking reward and punishment information and establishing emotional responses to specified behaviors and actions (Rolls, 2019). The purpose of this study is to use information obtained by electroencephalogram (EEG) to make inferences about the cingulate cortex's role in food perception in three comparator groups: individuals with self-identified eating disorders, individuals who are chronic exercisers, and a healthy control group. Chronic exercisers are classified as individuals who participate in vigorous aerobic exercise for at least 30 minutes, 4 times a week. Once data collection begins, researchers will evaluate neural responses as participants are shown 50 images of different foods and classify and classify them based on their perception of the foods being good or bad. The hypothesis in this study is that there will be similar neural responses/similar perceptions of food in the active group and the individuals with eating disorders. The goal of this study is to analyze the role of the cingulate cortex in food perception and observe the neural responses for different foods in specific groups

    Patch Based Analysis With Machine Learning to Aid Breast Cancer Recurrence Prediction

    Since the introduction of whole slide scanners, machine learning research has become a popular area of interest in digital pathology. Many studies have attempted to use machine learning to aid pathology tasks such as breast cancer diagnosis and metastasis detection. However, one area that has less available research is in applying machine learning to predict patient recurrence risk categories. Since H&E-stained images are routinely collected for diagnostic purposes, creating an image-based recurrence prediction method could help increase accessibility and lower cost for recurrence risk category assessment for breast cancer patients. In this study, patches were extracted from a dataset of 102 whole slide images to train a machine learning model to predict slide level breast cancer Oncotype DX risk category using only H&E-stained images with no additional clinical data or region of interest annotations. Multiple patch size and patch quantity combinations were tested. Patches were extracted from each whole slide image and feature extraction was performed before the features were aggregated together to create a bag of features for each case. These bags were then used to train a logistic regression model. The best scoring model utilized 2,000 patches of size 256 x 256 pixels. This model scored 0.628 ± 0.044 accuracy on 5-fold cross validation across the entire dataset

    DETERMINING THE EFFECT OF SEX ON FCT CHANGES FOLLOWING DROP JUMPING ACTIVITIES IN HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS

    Previous research indicates that female’s cartilage responds to both applied loads and injury differently than male’s cartilage. Determining if this is true and why this might be the case will play an important role in understanding the development of osteoarthritis as well as the treatment of patients post-surgically. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of sex on FCT changes following drop jumping activities in healthy individuals. Participants had 4 control ultrasound images taken of each knee to establish a baseline thickness of their femoral cartilage, followed by two series of 10 drop landings from a 30 cm platform. After each set of drop landings, 3 more images were taken of each knee. All images were analyzed using an external computer software program, Horos, to measure the thickness of the femoral cartilage across three different regions: medial, intercondylar, and lateral. Mixed Model ANOVAs with repeated measures on condition (3) and a between factor of sex were performed. Male’s cartilage was found to be significantly thicker (p=.005) than female’s when averaging each of the five measured points: x̄males = 2.259 mm, 95% CI [2.049, 2.468] and x̄females = 1.832 mm, 95% CI [1.676, 1.989]. There was no significant change in cartilage thickness across the conditions (p =.599) and there was no sex by condition interaction (p=.497) with an observed power of 0.216. We expected to see some difference in the way that males’ and females’ cartilage adapted throughout the trials, and it is possible that the reason we did not see the expected results because the stimulus of 10 drop landings for a 30 cm platform is not great enough to cause a decrease in cartilage thickness. This protocol, however, was designed to be a more realistic representation of the stresses that someone might encounter in their daily life, and thus may not be able to fully represent the adaptability of cartilage under greater amounts of loading. If future studies find conclusive evidence to say that sex has an impact of femoral cartilage thickness adaptations, further studies should be done to determine if it is possible to change the movement patterns of one of the sexes to reduce the probability of dangerous load being placed on the knee. Understanding these differences might in the future play a role in understanding the development of osteoarthritis as well as the treatment of patients post surgically

    DEVELOPMENT OF FLOW-THROUGH PERFUSION CHAMBERS IN THE STUDY OF SPERM MITOCHONDRIAL METABOLISM AND FERTILIZATION COMPETENCE

    Sperm are small, motile cells which are hard to capture and study effectively. The consequence of research into these elusive cells could be one of the keys to unlock the answer behind the driving forces of fertility, and to create better methods of sperm selection for In-Vito Fertilization (IVF) procedure. To effectively study the movement of both individuals and populations of sperm cells low cost and effective flow-through perfusion chambers must be created for the volume and specificity of experiments. Using multiple iterations with continuous quality improvements, perfusion chambers showed promising results to continue the work of studying mitochondrial metabolism and fertilization competence. The different iterations of the perfusion chamber are presented chronologically, and their drawbacks are discussed until a final form is displayed as a suitable method for experimentation. The chambers work by allowing sperm to explore the space free from external influence and collect in a collecting part of the chamber having experienced selective pressure based on distance and time. Microscopy was used to take pictures and videos of the cells which can be used to extrapolate data about their distribution of phenotypes

    Application of Concrete Crack Sealant in Infrastructure Repairs

    The infrastructure condition in the United States has been deterioration over the past few decades. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers Infrastructure Report Card, the overall rating of US infrastructure projects is C-. Severe deterioration is attributed to the inability of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) to sufficiently maintain and/or replace deteriorated elements due to lack of funding. In this research, maintenance of concrete cracking through the application of sealant is addressed. In order to determine the most effective sealant types in crack repairs, literature review is conducted, and specifications of several State Departments of Transportation are reviewed. The analysis of crack sealant effectiveness considered the type of crack, the type of sealant used, concrete surface preparation, sealant application, curing procedure and associated quality control methods. Finally, the appropriate testing procedures for sealant are determined. The outcome of this research will provide State DOTs personnel with efficient methodology to select and apply the appropriate types of sealants to different infrastructure project cracks to attain optimized and most-economic maintenance outcomes
