Japanese Black (Wagyu) cattle produce high-quality beef. However, whether Wagyu steers can be profitably raised under conditions different than the traditional Japanese ones remains unclear. From 2018 to 2020, we raised 262 Wagyu purebred steers, 103 Wagyu-by-Angus (Wangus) crossbred steers, and 43 Angus-by-European (ACL) crossbred steers on a Spanish farm with high welfare standards and a locally sourced, high-olein diet. Factors and factors’ interactions impacting steer growth were analyzed using generalized linear models. ACL steers grew faster than the other two groups, with Wangus showing intermediate fattening and muscle development. Average daily weight gains (kg/day) were 0.916 for Wagyu, 1.046 for Wangus, and 1.293 for ACL during the weaning to growing period, and 0.628 for Wagyu, 0.64 for Wangus, and 0.802 for ACL during the growing to fattening phase. ACL showed the lowest marbling rates. Wagyu and Wangus usually showed higher cholesterol, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein than ACL. ACL calves may experience greater stress at weaning, as suggested by higher glucose, lactate, and β-hydroxybutyrate than the other groups. The results suggest that Wagyu and Wangus steers showed adequate growth, health, and metabolic development in this type of production system, with Wagyu purebreds probably being more profitable than Wangus crossbreeds

Resting ecology of parasitoids in the field: safe in a bed and breakfast?

The selection of a safe place to rest at night may be an essential survival strategy for diurnal animals. Despite the importance of parasitoid wasps as consumers in terrestrial ecosystems, their selection of sites to rest and their mortality during the night have not been measured, to the best of our knowledge, reflective of a general lack of understanding of resting behaviours of insects in the field. Here, we used parasitoid wasps of the genus Aphytis (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), the highly successful biological control agents of the California red scale, Aonidiella aurantii (Hemiptera: Diaspididae), to study the resting ecology of parasitoids in the field over space and time, considering both external and internal correlates of parasitoid resting behaviour. At night, Aphytis wasps tended to rest on citrus tree leaves, which have a lower host density, but also fewer predators and a greater density of food sources for adult wasps, compared to fruit and branches. On this plant substrate, most of the population avoided predators and survived the night. Aphytis wasps selected leaves on which to rest at night in a nonrandom fashion. They tended to aggregate on leaves with high densities of hosts and food sources (honeydew) and with low densities of potential predators. During the day, wasps with lower egg loads tended to remain on leaves, likely resting and maturing eggs. Overall, our results demonstrate, for the first time, that parasitoids select certain sites at which to rest safely at night. These findings also suggest that the availability of safe resting places could be a valuable resource for beneficial insects in agroecosystems, especially those that have life spans extending over multiple days

Relation between Rind Pigmentation and Internal Quality of Blood Orange ‘Sanguinelli’: Physicochemical and Sensory Studies

    Get PDF
This study evaluated the relation between rind colour and the internal physicochemical and sensory qualities of ‘Sanguinelli’ blood oranges, one of the main blood orange cultivars grown in the Mediterranean region. To this end, 400 fruits were harvested in three different orchards and classified according to rind pigmentation intensity (slight, medium, intense, very intense). All fruits were individually evaluated by determining rind and pulp colour, total soluble solids, acidity, maturity index, juice yield, firmness, and size. Moreover, 71 consumers performed a triangle test to evaluate if fruit sensory properties depended on rind pigmentation. Our results revealed (for the first time) that pulp pigmentation and total soluble solid (TSS) content strongly depend on rind colouration. Among the fruit from the same orchard, the redder the pigmented fruit was (externally) the deeper the red pulp, and the higher the TSS became. This pattern was corroborated in the three orchards under study. Other characteristics, such as acidity, juice yield, firmness, and fruit size, did not depend on external pigmentation. Sensory studies showed that the more coloured the fruit, the higher the accumulated sugar content; consumers perceive these fruits as being sweeter than slightly pigmented ones. This information can be very useful for the citrus industry as external colour may become a quality index for blood oranges, as well as for consumers to make purchase decisions

Eliciting sweet pepper plant resistance to Aulacorthum solani and attractiveness on Aphelinus abdominalis by exposure to (Z)-3-hexenyl propanoate

It is widely documented that plants respond to herbivory by releasing volatile compounds mediated by phytohormone signaling pathways. Herbivore-Induced Plant Volatiles (HIPVs), among which are the green leaf volatiles, can repel herbivores, attract their natural enemies, and warn neighboring plants of herbivore attacks. Plants that receive these warning signals activate defense mechanisms and therefore become more resistant to pests and diseases. In this work, we tested whether plants activated by exposure to the green leaf volatile (Z)-3-hexenyl propanoate [(Z)-3-HP)] can enhance the management of one of the most important pests of sweet peppers, the aphid Aulacorthum solani (Kalt.) (Homoptera: Aphididae). Here, we show that sweet pepper plants exposed to (Z)-3-HP induce plant defenses that repel A. solani winged adults and attract females of Aphelinus abdominalis (Dalman) (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), an aphid parasitoid used to control a plethora of aphid pests, including A. solani. Additionally, (Z)-3-HP-exposed plants were less infested by A. solani than their non-exposed counterparts under greenhouse conditions. Significant transcriptional differences were obtained when studying the temporal gene expression pattern of three defense-related genes, ASR1, PIN2, and AMP1, markers of abscisic acid, jasmonic acid, and salicylic acid, respectively, during the duration of the greenhouse experiment. Our results demonstrate how the use of volatiles as plant defense inducers can play a role in the management of A. solani in sweet pepper and opens the door to exploring this technique on other aphid pests in other crops

    Get PDF

Transcriptomic profile of the predatory mite Amblyseius swirskii (Acari: Phytoseiidae) on different host plants

    Get PDF
Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is a predatory mite, effective at controlling whiteflies and thrips in protected crops. However, on tomato its efficacy as a biocontrol agent is hindered, most probably by the plant trichomes and their exudates. Our aim was to characterize the response of A. swirskii to the tomato trichome exudates and identify three major detoxification gene sets in this species: cytochromes P450 (CYPs), glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) and carboxyl/cholinesterases (CCEs). Mites were exposed separately to tomato and pepper, a favourable host plant for A. swirskii, after which their transcriptional responses were analysed and compared. The de novo transcriptome assembly resulted in 71,336 unigenes with 66.1% of them annotated. Thirty-nine A. swirskii genes were differentially expressed after transfer on tomato leaves when compared to pepper leaves; some of the expressed genes were associated with the metabolism of tomato exudates. Our results illustrate that the detoxification gene sets CYPs, GSTs and CCEs are abundant in A. swirskii, but do not play a significant role when in contact with the tomato exudates

    Get PDF
