    No full text
This study explored the use of concept cartoons to enhance the performance of Junior High School pupils in selected science concepts by using pre and post intervention test. Sample comprised 37 Junior High School pupils and one science teacher in Abelemkpe Junior High School in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. Concept cartoons are instructional tools designed to generate scientific thinking among learners. Adapted to the 5E instructional model, they can be used at any stage of the learning process to facilitate effective learning of scientific concepts. Completed tests based on five selected science concepts were analyzed using the t-test inferential statistics to establish any significance difference between respondents’ mean scores of the pre and post intervention data. Results revealed that the use of concept cartoons to teach the selected science concepts enhanced the pupils’ cognitive achievement. The concept cartoons affected learners’ academic achievement in positive ways. The pupils were able to construct their own knowledge and made meaning of their everyday experiences. Results of the t-test (t (36)=8.41, p=.000), (t (36)=9.38, p=.000), (t(36)=4.85, p=.000), (t(36)=10.58, p=.000) and (t(36)=11.85, p=.000) indicated a significant difference between the mean scores of the pretest and posttest. This implied that the use of concept cartoon had a positive effect on the cognitive achievement of pupils. It is therefore, recommended that JHS integrated science teachers adopt the use of concept cartoons to teach science effectively and to increase the pupils’ motivation to learn science

Design of internal heat transport intensifier for metal hydride storage tank

    No full text
The present article deals with potential improvement of heat removal from the centre of a metal hydride tank towards the tank’s periphery while using passive heat transfer modules. Passive cooling elements are used in order to improve heat removal from the centre of a tank towards its peripheral parts. This increases the homogeneity of the thermal field in a tank’s cross-section, which is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. Moreover, the use of such elements improves the kinetics of hydrogen absorption into an alloy, in particular by prolonging the time to an equilibrium temperature of the alloy for a particular equilibrium pressure, which may shorten the time to a tank being 100% filled with hydrogen. The article describes four different designs of internal heat transfer intensifiers, which are aimed at improving the thermal field distribution inside the tank and their theoretical impact on the thermal field, which was examined using Ansys CFX software

Defining the territory size of a Geographical Indication: A systematic mapping study

    No full text
The objective of this study is to map articles that present models for determining the territory size of Geographical Indications (GIs), a relevant factor for the management of GIs that is poorly explored in studies on the subject. The study was undertaken as a systematic mapping study (SMS), whose main objective is to identify accessible facts about a given research topic, which is also the most suitable approach when aiming to analyze the state of the art of a subject with little evidence available in the literature. Using the Scopus and Web of Science databases, in which 671 results were found, and the StArt tool to select the articles, 652 articles were excluded (30 duplicates and 622 that did not meet the inclusion criteria established in the systematic mapping protocol). Then, after a complete reading of the texts of the 19 remaining articles, 14 were excluded. Thus, this study included only five articles in which GI size models were developed, the oldest of which was published in 2007 and the most recent in 2021. We therefore conclude that few studies are available in the literature on this theme

On the basis and types of data gathered and the instrument used, both quantitative and qualitative techniques of data analysis or binary logistic regression supported by SPSS was employed. The only good thing about this life was farming since people had fertile lands. But, when villagization was implemented the lives of the villagers improved because they started to have better access to social services. The study showed that villagization was implemented voluntarily and based on the consent of the local people. However, it is possible to conclude that villagization has significantly improved the lives of the villagers by bringing positive changes that did not exist before. people

This research aims to analyze the factors that affect the capital structure of companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in the period 2010-2014. The variables studied were profitability, sales growth, asset structure and company size. This research is a comparative causal study. The data used is secondary data obtained from the site www.idx.co.id.The population in this study are all companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in the period 2010-2014. The sample selection is done by using purposive sampling method, so that as much as 1089 observational data are obtained. Analysis of the data used is multiple regression analysis. The results of this study indicate that the variable profitability, asset structure and firm size significantly influence the capital structure. The magnitude of the coefficient of determination (Adjusted R Square) is equal to 0.104. This means that 10.4% of the dependent variable that is capital structure can be explained by four independent variables namely profitability, sales growth, asset structure and company size. While the remaining 89.6% is explained by variables or other causes outside the model

The role of assessment in the teaching and learning of Mathematics cannot be underestimated. Therefore, efficacious teaching and learning of Mathematics must be driven by effective use of assessment. This study, therefore, sought to investigate the Use of assessment (practices) of Beginning and Experienced SHS Mathematics teachers in two selected districts in the central region of Ghana. In this study, Assessment Practices means what SHS teachers use assessment to do in the teaching and learning of Mathematics under the auspices of a school. A sample of 160 SHS Mathematics teachers was used in this study. These were made up of 92 Beginning and 68 Experienced SHS Mathematics teachers. The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire. The questionnaire was administered to the 92 Beginning and 68 Experienced SHS Mathematics teachers in the two districts in the Central Region of Ghana. The design used in this study was a cross-sectional survey. Data collected from the respondents were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations. An independent sample t-test was used to test whether there exists a significant difference in the assessment practices of the Beginning and Experienced SHS Mathematics teachers. It was found out that the majority (87 out of 92) of the Beginning Senior High School Mathematics teachers do not either frequently or always integrate assessment in the teaching and learning of Mathematics. It was also found out that the majority (60 out of 68) of the Experienced Senior High School Mathematics teachers also do not either frequently or always integrate assessment in the teaching and learning of Mathematics. They rather see classroom assessment as an additional activity that mainly comes at the end of the teaching-learning process. The study also revealed a significant difference in the assessment practices of Beginning SHS Mathematics teachers and that the Experienced SHS Mathematics teachers in the two districts. Based on the findings, it was recommended among other things that In-service training should be organized for both the Experienced SHS Mathematics teachers and the Beginning SHS Mathematics teachers to help them bridge the gap that exists between their practices

Bioecological Theory and Risk Management: A Model for School Risk Planning

    No full text
With the vulnerability, unpredictability, and ambiguity of the situation, schools all over the world have faced a variety of restrictions and unprecedented risks that caused some to cease operations and classes permanently or for an extended period of time. The concept of risk has become closely associated with every school process and structure so as to aid them in adapting to the current situation. This paper explores the concept of risk management and risks planning through the lens of school management and the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) Cycle. Furthermore, the researchers link the permeation of the direct and indirect effects of risks in the school system by reflecting on the layers of the school’s bioecological nest as adapted from the Bioecological Theory of Urie Bronfenbrenner. Finally, this paper suggests a model for risk planning that can help school administrators and leaders in managing risks and aid future researchers in studying concepts related to risk management
