The Need for Context-specificity in Global Educational Policy Transfer by Non-state Actors: The Case of "Teach for All" to "Teach for India"

    No full text
The revitalised role of non-state actors such as non-profit organisations and education reform movements in educational provision and delivery has contributed to the global circulation of uninformed transnational adaptation of ideas and practices around educational change. In adapting models in one place for emulation in another place, educational non-profits often lose sight of the local realities, thereby decontextualizing cultural differences and normalizing the language of generalization. Such is the case of the Teach for India (TFI), a non-governmental organization (NGO) working in marginalized districts of India to provide quality education to disadvantaged children through its alternative teacher credentialing program. TFI’s theory of change and intervention approach revolves around the model of Teach for All (TFA), an international movement whose model and belief of equitable educational access and opportunity continues to spread on a global scale through transnational actors. Through an extensive literature review, this article analyses critically and discusses how the TFAll’s Model is operationalised in India, through TFI that was established in 2009 to promote the universalization of Elementary Education (UEE) in India. While examining the underlying assumptions that inform the de-contextualisation of the globalised and philanthropy backed reform model, it analyses the key features of the intervention approach and presents the critiques and limitations. Beyond contextualisation, the paper makes a case for the need for non-state actors to take into account significant sociocultural and political differences in voluntary transfer of reform ideas. While acknowledging the significance of policy mobilities in bringing entrepreneurial solutions to educational problems across continents, the article recommends that such transfer must be driven by perceived necessity within local contexts

It complements Silva (2020b) research, which showed that among 108 well-evaluated countries, the top benchmark nations against Covid-19 are Vietnam, Taiwan, and Thailand. For example, on April 16, 2021 around 3,011,574 lives were officially lost by Covid-19, while Taiwan, Vietnam, and Thailand reported respectively only 11, 35, and 97 fatal cases (WORLDOMETERS, 2021). So, this article main aim is to investigate the Vietnam performance and the management practices used to save lives against Covid19. The research uses an online questionnaire, is descriptive with documentary and bibliographic approaches to identify management practices, including Non Pharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs) adopted against a pandemic. Also the Fatality Total Index (SILVA, 2020b p. 563) was used to compare Vietnam's performance with 43 semifinalist countries. Some results are: 1) 200 NPIs were identified across the world against coronavirus; 2) Among the 44 countries, Vietnam showed the second best performance, after Taiwan; 3) among 107 respondents living in Vietnam, only 5.61% don´t believe that cultural practices are decisive for the low rate of Covid-19 death, while most (94.39%) believe in that. From the group that believe, the most decisive cultural practices were: wear a mask, wash hands, not shake hands, not hug in public and few religious assembly; 4) for 106 respondents living in Vietnam, the ten main policy measures adopted by the National Government that saved lives against the virus are: international travel control, public information campaigns, schools closures, public event cancellations, integration with mass media, restriction on internal movement, effective public-private collaboration, increase the medical and personal equipment capacity, public transport reduction and combat fake news. At the final, ten golden lessons are provided, from 340 policies, measures, programs, projects, innovative products/services identified, with the majority led by the Public Sector (73.5%), followed by Corporations (8.5%), Others (6.5%), Start ups (6.2%), and Universities (5.3%)

This study examines the Tanzania citizens’ participation in domestic tourism. The study was based on the Social Exchange Theory and its components of trust on transport and destination visit price. The choice of the theory aimed to overcome possible limitations of using the theory in Tanzania. The study extends the applicability of the component of Social Exchange Theory to include additional construct such destination visit price (DVP) variable as a mediator. Data collection questionnaires were distributed to 400 respondents in Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Bagamoyo. Being a quantitative study, Structure Equation Modelling (SEM) was deployed to establish whether trust infrastructure (TI) and destination visit price (DVP) lead to the participation of Tanzania citizens in domestic tourism (PDT). The results of the study show that the measurement and structural model exhibited better model fit indices. The relationship between trust on transport results to participation in domestic tourism through destination visit price (DVP). It is recommended that the variables analyzed in this study be recognition for influencing the participation of Tanzania citizens in domestic tourism.

The purpose of the present is to propose the construction of the ellipse in a didactic way in which the work deals with the exposure of a specific methodology for the 3rd year of high school when dealing with ellipse content. Followed by the results of the realization of a workshop aimed at the construction of the ellipse in a didactic way, constructed with low cost material, thereby proposing the teaching of mathematics in a more pleasant and effective way, where the ellipse equations were defined with the theoretical concept and afterwards, the gardener's method was used to construct this curve in a terrain, using ropes and civil construction fasteners, so that the student could concretize and apply this content in practice. After that, it was used for construction in the classroom using thread threads or thin strings to make the tracing and to finish it used the Geogebra software to finish the work showing the perfection of the curve explained in the classroom. The didactic process carried out showed a real interest of the students mainly with the use of the field practice. In conclusion, teaching mathematics in a didactic and interactive way provides a favorable environment for learning, stimulating students with a critical sense and an investigative spirit

    No full text
Breast cancer is a disease of epidemiological concern worldwide, being considered a serious public health problem. Although it is well established that early diagnosis and adequate treatment interfere with mortality rates and the prevalence of cancer, few data are available regarding the descriptive epidemiology of breast cancer in Brazil, as well as in the various states of the federation, as is the State of Amapá. The general objective was to characterize the risk factors of breast cancer patients treated at Hospital de Clínicas Dr. Alberto Lima (HCAL) from January 2012 to December 2017 in the city of Macapá, Amapá. Cases of breast cancer were reviewed, with an analysis of 194 medical records, and the following variables were studied: age, education level, histological type of the neoplasia, age at first delivery, menarche and menopause, breastfeeding time, alcohol intake, smoking, family history of breast cancer in first-degree relatives. It was noted that the age group most affected was between 41-50 years old and with an education level of elementary education. In these women, the most frequent characteristics were: age at first delivery between 13-20 years, menarche between 10-13 years, menopause from 41-50 years with a significant number of patients at menace (outside menopause), breastfeeding time between 2-22 and 23-42 months, both intervals with the same number of records; most did not drink alcohol, were not smokers and had no family history of first-degree relatives of breast cancer. In the cases studied, the most frequently diagnosed histological type was invasive ductal carcinoma

PHILOSOPHY AND THEATRE IN THE CENTURY OF ENLIGHTENMENT: Diderot, Voltaire and Rousseau

    No full text
The theatrical performance has always been a continual concern during all the history of humanity, because it performs an art where people have certain stories that arouse many feelings and insights to the spectators. It highlights the fact that the theatrical performance has special importance for philosophical reflection, especially in the characteristic illustration of the philosophy of the eighteenth century. In this context, several thinkers participated intensely of the political reality of this time, using the theatrical practice on several occasions, both for the contribution to the intellectual framework and to portray the daily life of the rising class, namely the bourgeoisie. Among these thinkers, this paper will highlight the Voltaire conceptions of representation of the aristocratic theater, establishing it as a powerful means of education; Diderot about the genesis of the drama, where art had the function of refining and instructing individuals, representing the aspirations of the bourgeoisie. Since the conception of Jean-Jacques Rousseau about the theater, unlike the two mentioned thinkers, says the educational role of the theater is illusory, as the theatrical representation only reflects the passions of their audience. Thus, it is emphasized that the Genevan thinker followed a contrary understanding to the thinkers of the period

Game Changer: Gamification of Teachers' Lessons During the COVID-19 Pandemic

    No full text
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused such an unprecedented disturbance to the world, particularly on the economy, and caused significant disruption to the education ecosystem. It has affected school organizations and forced school leaders to adopt alternative ways of learning. The transition to online education posed many challenges in engaging students to participate actively, and one of the solutions is for teachers to create better digital lessons using gamification elements. But despite the prevalence of technology, educators lack the knowledge and skills to captivate students' interest to participate actively in online learning. At present, there is a dearth of studies on the application of gamification to teachers' online lessons during the COVID-19 pandemic. Educators must capitalize on new engaging technological trends as a form of techno-structural OD intervention to complement their pedagogies, teaching processes and encourage students' online participation. This concept paper highlights the benefits of applying gamification to education, particularly on how teachers can utilize game elements in creating, managing, and updating digitalized lessons to motivate students amidst the pandemic. The paper also explores fostering a healthy culture for students' heightened level of motivation, increased acquisition of knowledge, and learning new skills.  It encourages schools to adopt the appropriate type of gamification and suggests future researchers on the various types and elements of gamification that can be adapted by selected schools

Clinical and Therapeutic Treatment Approach Between Diabetes Mellitus and Urinary Tract Infection

    No full text
Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic syndrome of multiple origins, caused by the insulin absence in the bloodstream and/or by the inability of insulin to adequately exert its effects, causing hyperglycemia and subsequent complications in the body's organic systems. Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most frequent due to the glucose increase in blood circulation and the impairment of cellular immunity, creating a favorable environment for the bacteria proliferation at the inflammation spots. This review describes the clinical and therapeutic aspects of diabetes mellitus and urinary tract infection, with guidelines on glucose management in these events. A non-systematic review was carried out in the Virtual Health Library, PubMed, Scielo, and Google Academic databases with the descriptors Diabetes mellitus, Urinary Tract Infection, Hyperglycemia, Bacteriuria, and Urinary Incontinence. The most relevant articles were selected. Pertinent clinical and therapeutic issues were discussed, covering the diabetes factors that contribute to the onset of UTI; urinary tract infection complications in patients with diabetes mellitus; asymptomatic bacteriuria, recurrent urinary tract infections, and urinary incontinence in people with diabetes; treatments for diabetes and urinary tract infection; and the relationship between glucose-lowering medications and UTI. Given the greater susceptibility of people with diabetes to acquire UTI, the combined insight into these diseases is crucial, both for better UTI prevention in diabetics and for the treatment of both
