ECHO360 Active Learning Platform in Health Sciences education: How, when and why to use it?
The ECHO360 Active Learning Platform (ALP) is an online active learning platform allowing the creation of interactive multimedia content for anytime student learning, with the potential for comprehensive analytics. This ALP has previously been shown to enhance student participation and engagement during in-class activities however it can be challenging to use at first. To enhance the uptake of ECHO360 ALP in and out of the classroom a simplified guide with clear instructions on the most useful aspects of the platform was developed and shared with staff, successfully creating a community of instructors. A student guide was also prepared which showcased the methods for gaining the most from its use in and out of lectures. These resources are available in the appendix
Financial Literacy: What Have we Learned so Far?
The present paper explores various approaches to the development of cognitive process dimensions in financial literacy. Applying the regression model, the study has examined the strength of the relationship between the actual financial competence of 413 Brazilian’s students aged 18-21, studying economic disciplines, and their school performance. The research has produced the following conclusions: (a) a weak dependence of actual skills on school performance; (b) inherently associated consequence of school performance is not corresponding to the actual financial skills; (c) a low level of financial competence in the dimensions - Remember, Understand and Apply
“They Don't Play in Service”: Analysis of Female Work in the Context of Red Ceramic Production
The production of red ceramics (tiles and bricks) was an important activity for the economic development of the municipality of Morro da Fumaça, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil from the 1960s onwards. This segment was a major contributor to the introduction of labor female labor in the local economy. The activity still has great economic relevance for the municipality, since it is a source of tax collection and generation of direct and indirect jobs, for a representative portion of the population. This study aims to narrate the way in which the production and development of red ceramic production took place in the municipality of Morro da Fumaça, south of Santa Catarina, Brazil, confronting it with the social reality of the actors that make up the productive force sector, especially female workers. From the female performance, analyze the working conditions to which they were submitted. Such conditions, at times, imposed a double working day in the activity of ceramic production, work in a family nucleus with the inclusion of minor workers, in addition to the responsibilities with domestic chores
Innovation Policy and the Role of Accounting in the Strategic Management of Technology Transfer: A Study in the Scientific, Technological and Innovation Institutions of Northeast Brazil
This research aims to analyze whether Intellectual Property assets of Federal Institutes (FIs) in Northeast Brazil are being measured, accounted for and evidenced in Financial Statements (FSs) of these Scientific, Technological and Innovation Institutions (STIIs).Therefore, in order to achieve the proposed objective, a bibliographic, exploratory, and descriptive research was carried out. This survey was achieved through a qualitative approach from document analysis and collection of secondary data related to innovation policies of FIs, and valuation and accounting of IP assets. The results showed that patent registrations granted and Technology Transfer (TT) are still incipient, although the majority of the Technological Innovation Nuclei (NITs) of Northeast FIs have innovation policies that support intellectual protection of inventions. Even though there are Brazilian Accounting Standards (NBCs) that uphold the process of measuring, recording and disclosing of IP assets, such as NBC TG 04 (R4, 2017a) and NBC TSP 08 (CFC, 2017b), this result can also be due to an absence of structured and guiding procedures within the scope of NITs’ innovation policies
CVRRICULUM Program: Benefits and Challenges of Embedding Virtual Reality as an Educational Medium in Undergraduate Curricula
Since the release of more affordable, portable, and easy-to-use virtual reality (VR) systems in 2014, there has been renewed interest in using this technology in education, as an alternative to traditional learning, because it creates more opportunities for experiential education. Despite the many benefits and affordances of VR, widespread adoption in post-secondary education has been limited, and gaps remain in the provisioning of detailed guidelines for implementing this technology in curricula. Our team developed the CVRRICULUM (CVR) initiative: a pilot program that recruited instructors to adapt a traditional written assignment into a VR format. A mixed-methods approach was used to collect data from five instructor and 18 student participants. In this manuscript we describe the implementation process, report the identified challenges, and provide suggestions that should improve subsequent offerings. Our team addressed raised challenges by creating a set of resources available on the CVR website
The relationship between Investments to Increase Human Capital in the HEI and the Return on Intellectual and Integrative Capital
This article has as goal to compare the investments of Human Capital by the Humans Resources sector of institutions of a private administrative nature with the variation of Intellectual and Integrative Capital and to determine the relationship between the involvement of human resources with HEI and their title. From the reach of these goals, the problem will be answered: which is the relationship between the investments to increase the Human Capital in the HEI and the return in Intellectual and Integrative Capital? The hypothesis that guides this article are: there is no increase of Intellectual and Integrative Capital after teaching qualification. The data were analyzed qualitatively with the construction of inferences, deductions and inductions in dialogs with theoretical aspects. The results showed that there is no proportional relationship between the increases of human resources and the Intellectuals and Integrative Capitals. In some cases, it actually decreased
The Day Our School Went Pitch Black and the Nights We Reclaimed the Light
I will never forget that a year ago, last March 2020, we had to close our school suddenly. It feels like someone just turned off the light without warning, and everything went pitch black. Confused and scared, we tried to make sense of and confront the endless challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic brought upon our school organization. The virus caused significant interruptions to our processes, policies, people, technostructure, and financial resources. However, with each tiresome blow, the school leaders and teachers navigated through and around those challenges. The only comforting thought was we were not alone in our quest to survive, for every organization around the world was thrown into this catastrophic state and was fighting hard to persist and endure.
Looking back, I reflect on the extraordinary challenges our organization experienced akin with most organizations using Kurt Lewin's Three-Step Change Model and the three ways we responded to COVID-19
PERCEPTION INDEX OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION IN FUNDAMENTAL EDUCATION SCHOOLS IN A CITY ON THE BRAZIL / BOLIVIA FRONTIER
Objective: to analyze the Environmental Education Perception Index in the light of national curricular parameters (PCN’s) within the scope of elementary education in state schools in the city of Guajará-Mirim, Rondônia, on the Brazil / Bolivia border. Method: for this study, factor analysis was used as a mechanism for building performance indices for each parameter studied. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences - SPSS [30] tool was used to determine the proposed indexes that followed the scale advocated by Hair et al [21]. Results: the results presented by the teachers of the 4 schools correspond to the perception index considered “good” with an average index of 0.699. The average perception index of school technicians and managers was 0.591, considered a “regular” index. The students had an average performance of 0.537, considered a “regular” performance index. The general IPEA among all schools surveyed was considered “regular” with a performance index of 0.597. Conclusion: the fact that Guajará-Mirim has 92% of its territory occupied by Conservation Units and Indigenous Lands and a strong environmental policy does not correspond to the level of abstraction applied by formal Environmental Education. Environmental Education given in Guajará-Mirim elementary schools imposes considerable risks on the environmental conscience of future generations, as it presents certain deficiencies in fulfilling its institutional role as a social transformer, configuring itself as a limiter of sustainable development and awareness environmental
Risk Assessment Proposal In HydrauliC Presses With Fuzzy Logic
The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety level of industrial machines, in particular hydraulic press. The dissertation used hydraulic presses as the object of study. The research instruments used were machine safety analyzes based on normative items pre-established in ABNT NBR: 12100, possible accidents that these machineries can cause. The results show that hydraulic presses cause many accidents, in some situations dying. Through Annex B of ABNT NBR 14153: 2013, there are 4 risk categories for machinery, the greater the degree of risk, the more unsafe the machine is. The appraiser's experience is very important to analyze the machine and reach the level of risk level before and after the adjustment. Finally, it appears that the machine analyzed in this study was at risk level 3, after analysis and adaptations the same machine was at risk level 1, totally acceptable to maintain the operator's safety level
Effects of Various Training Techniques on Bat Velocity of High School Baseball Players
Faster bat speed allows a baseball or softball player more time to decide how to hit the ball and provides more transfer of momentum to the ball (Nathan, 2003; Syzmanski, DeRenne, Spaniol, 2009). Purpose: This paper examines the effectiveness of three training strategies for improving bat speed among high school baseball players. Methods: Nine high school students were recruited and separated into 3 groups using different training implements. A standard bat (29 oz.), a weighted bat (45 oz.), and Therabands attached to a standard bat were used over a 3-week training program. Data were analyzed using a Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA. Results: The standard bat group experienced no change in bat speed (± 0.89), while the weighted bat group increased by 1.9 ± 0.46 mph and the Theraband group improved by 3.1 ± 0.38 mph. The only significant difference was in the change in bat speed between the Theraband group and the standard bat group (p = .022). All other data were non-significant. Conclusions: Attaching Therabands to a standard bat may be an effective training tool to improve bat speed
