Obstacles to parental involvement in children's education: New teachers' perceptions and strategies

    No full text
This study explored new teachers’ perceptions of, and strategies for overcoming the obstacles to parental involvement in children’s education. 30 elementary school teachers with 1 to 5 years’ teaching experience were interviewed. Data were first coded through the grounded theory approach and then analyzed by case and cross case. As found out, obstacles to parental involvement were related to parents’ lack of cognitive readiness, affective preparedness, and physical resources. Strategies new teachers employed to overcome their perceived obstacles included cognitively informing, persistently outreaching, psychologically disarming or comforting, and consciously attending to parents’ individual differences, needs, or personal preferences. Lessons learned from this study will inform both in-service teachers’ efforts to engage parents for optimal student learning outcomes and teacher educators’ endeavors to prepare prospective teachers for more effective teacher-parent communication

    No full text
The present study took place in traditional coastal communities located around and within the Marine Extractive Reserves (RESEX-Mar) of Tracuateua and Araí-Peroba, Northeast of Pará, Brazilian Amazon, in the period between 2019 and 2020, involving thirty families, whose self-sustaining activities depend on family farming, artisanal fishing and crab fishing. The aimed objectives were to investigate the generational knowledges and how descendants learn about them, considering the environmental productive practices of such traditional communities, as well as to reflect on the ways the transmission processes occur to the following generations. The employed method involved a qualitative approach, with field observation and interview techniques. In data collection, the following instruments were used: a script with semi-structured questions to conduct the interviews and field notes taken during observation periods. Data analysis was based on the organization, tabulation and treatment of the linguistic terms collected from the interviews with the support of graphics generated by the IRAMUTEQ Software. Subsequently, content analysis was applied. The results showed there are riches constituted from the existing traditional knowledge, mainly in family farming and artisanal fishing (fish and crab), which are taught and transmitted by families to new generations. Conclusively, the research reveals that in the relationship between human beings and nature there are feelings of belonging perceived from the interviewees' identities, adding symbols and meanings, which are experienced and respected by all

    No full text
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), COVID-19 is a viral disease transmitted from person to person, which has the fastest spread in the world. OBJECTIVE: This project aimed to analyze epidemiological aspects of COVID-19 in the municipality of Gurupi/TO. METHODOLOGY: The research was conducted by consulting the epidemiological bulletin of COVID-19 made available daily by VISAE, from March 16, 2020, to May 15, 2021, where we identified the evolution of positive cases, deaths, and gender identification of this population, and analysis of literature review on the subject. RESULTS: Of the 10,336 positive cases, 5,570 (53.89%) of the cases are female, 194 (7.13%) evolved to deaths, of these 70 (36.08%) were female and 124 (63.92%) were male. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: From the results, it is visible the reduction in the numbers of positive cases for COVID-19 from April 2021, which can be taken into consideration the measures adopted through the Municipal Decrees, and in part to the beginning of the immunization process. Thus, the continuity of prophylaxis measures is essential for the control of the high chain of transmission in the municipality

APPLICATION OF THE NONLINEAR AUTOREGRESSIVE MODEL WITH EXOGENOUS INPUTS FOR RIVER LEVEL FORECAST IN THE AMAZON

    No full text
The present work is justified by three basic lines that involve the problem of the theme, which are the use of Artificial Intelligence, the problem of floods in the Amazon and the issue of technology in favor of decision making. The environmental impacts caused by economic and social factors are problems portrayed in scenarios such as floods and ebbs of rivers, bringing up situations such as an increase in diseases, reduction of agricultural production in locations that depend on accurate geological control, in addition to the increase in erosive processes. in risk locations. Thus, the use of AI to predict the river level, which consequently can minimize problems arising from floods that cause an environmental impact, is highly possible, since when it is known in advance that an event is close to happening, decisions can be taken so that the impacts be smaller. This work models and applies NARX to forecast the river level in the Amazon with variables of easy access and implementation through the MATLAB software, in order to contribute with a forecast model capable of predicting a possible flood from the river level.

    No full text
Objective: To describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of children seen at a high-risk outpatient clinic, report the reasons for referral to the service, the outcomes, and elucidate the importance of specialized care for children at risk provided by public health in Brazil. Method: A descriptive, quantitative, cross-sectional retrospective study that identified the clinical-epidemiological characteristics of children under 12 months of age who started care between January/2017 and December/2018 in a specialized outpatient clinic for high-risk children. Data were collected from electronic medical records and analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2013, while for statistical tests of association, calculation of the odds ratio and confidence interval (95%) the software RStudio (1.4.1103) was used. Results: Of the 246 children seen, 53.66% were male, 76.42% Caucasian, 33.62% premature, 54.73% had low/insufficient weight. At the first consultation 79.67% were less than six months old and 58.54% were eutrophic. The main reasons for referral were prematurity (26.89%), suspected congenital infection (15.53%) and nutritional/gastrointestinal disorders (14.77%). Syphilis stood out among congenital infections with 63.41%. As for the outcome, 62.28% were lost to follow-up, and the use of breast milk was a protective factor for this outcome (OR:0.49; CI:0.26-0.92; p=0.03). Conclusions: The reasons for referral to the high-risk outpatient clinic, evidenced in this study, point to the importance of preventing prematurity, controlling congenital infections, and actions to strengthen the practice of breastfeeding in children under 6 months of age, since it has proven to be a protective factor against loss to follow-up in specialized services

Articulation between teaching, research and extension: Motivation tool for Scientific Initiation

    No full text
The articulation between Teaching, Research and Extension represents a legal condition for the existence of Higher Education Institutions - IES, according to the Federal Constitution of 1988, Article 207, which establishes: "Universities enjoy didactic-scientific, administrative and of financial and patrimonial management, and will obey the principle of inseparability between Teaching, Research and Extension”, sine qua non condition for critical training of future professionals and citizens based on the production and socialization of knowledge, promoting the articulation between the real situation and the ideal of the different operational and administrative, conceptual and pedagogical acts. The article has as general objective to evaluate the articulation between teaching, research and extension as a motivating instrument for the student to participate in Scientific Initiation programs. This is a documental research that sought to analyze the indicators of the Pedagogical Project of Courses-PPC of a Higher Education Institution, regarding evidence of teaching, research and extension articulation. It was observed that once the articulation between teaching, research and extension is not identified in the course evaluation instrument, there are no elements that motivate students to participate in scientific initiation programs, due to the lack of requirement of the National Institute of Studies and Educational Research Anísio Teixeira – INEP

Models to aid studies on territory delimitation for Brazilian geographical indications

    No full text
A geographical indication (GI) seal granted to a product certifies its territorial origin as well as the link between its quality and human and natural characteristics of its production environment (terroir). An existing challenge in the process of setting up a GI for a product is delimiting the geographic area that properly represents the terroir and generates the expected territorial development after the grant of this protection seal. This article presents tools that can contribute to studies on the delimitation of the territory of GIs in Brazil. Through a bibliographic search, we compared models for delineating GI areas compared with the standards used for this purpose in Brazilian GIs. Our findings show that the process of delimiting GI areas in Brazil is different for each type of indication, and distinct characteristics are also present in each type of GI intended, whether it be an Indication of Source or a Denomination of Origin. Only two of the analyzed models exhibited structures close to these characteristics, so they are recommended to aid studies on the delimitation of the area of Brazilian GIs. However, they cannot be used as a standard to this end
